Does anyone know if there are rules for animals that are intelligent i.e playing as a wolf but being able to contiplate the meaning of life
also if anyone has played such a character please reply

I ask because a friend wants to play something along the lines of redXII or whatever the red dogs name is from final fantasy 7

Take the animal you want from the SRD. Apply the awaken spell
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm
Roll stats or use point buy. (best if you treat int bonus as +0 and cha bonus as SRD cha score -10 (Or 11 if odd) +2)

Now the only problem is coming up with an appropriate lvl adjustment (And back story for why they are awakened including what languages tehy know and why the druid knew thoes languages. Hopefully the animal isnt to smart, because then it runs out of languages to learn from teh druid and thus know druidic, which makes teh druid lose his powers for revealing.......)

Plus, Nanaki (or Red XIII, if that's what you'd like to call him) was a feline, not a canine. He also was not an animal, but an Awakened Leapord is probably your best bet for re-creating him (I have yet to see a similar Magical Beast)

He's a hyena ;)

Personally, I'd awaken the 1HD big cat from Sandstorm. Don't remember the name of it, but it was Small, and a pretty good rogue type.

Nanaki would be perfect as a Swordsage, I think.

honestly you have to awaken a lion and call him Scar, sure he might turn out Lawful Evil but still...

if you want i can give you a level adjustment for playing an awakend animal just tell me the animal.

Watch Advent Children and tell me he's a dog. Honestly. He does stuff in there no dog could dream of doing. Some of the big cats could, but no canine.

I'll agree with him being an awakened animal (so he's really a magical beast).

I'm guessing it would be LA 0.

Look at lycanthropes. They're essentially animals with class levels plus some other abilities, and they're all LA 3 (natural) or 2 (afflicted). Here we have a lycanthrope with no DR, no Iron Will bonus feat, no shapeshifting ability.

As far as I recall, making an animal awakened does not give it an LA. Remember that you have to add 2 animal HD in ADDITION to the HD the creature normaly has (I think a fractional HD was rounded up to 1hd) So even a housecat was a ECL 4 character with one level of rogue.

If your useing a normal point buy, the best idea is to just make it normaly then add the animals physical ability mods using the subtract 10 or 11 method. I've found that the easyest.

Allso, red XIII shouldn't really be described as a cat or dog. Most likely some form of hybrid. He IS a magical beast anyway.

Nanaki, is a medium sized Magical beast, if you want his raice stas i have them here. If you've seen Advent Children youknow he has kids ind is 400 something years old (see beginning).

+2 str, +4 dex, +4 int, +2 wis
Medium
Fire subtype (half fire elemental if you want, but i'm not sure where it is
found)
Low light vision
Dark vision 60 ft
Natural Cunning (see minotaur- MM)
Special attacks bite- 1d6, claw- 1d6
Favored class any arcane casting (he was supposed to be used as a caster)
La +2

Sorry for using you're thred for this, do not use this as an awakend base creature, use it as GUARDIAN, i call Nanaki's race this for they never actually mentiond what he was.

I am making a thred for this so we can stop bothering Bannik

Ok so maybe its not exactly by the book but i was allowed to play an awakened tiger (became a paladin of Ehllona named Regit) Anyways all we did yas the subtract 10 or 11 thingy from the tigers base stats i had a +2 LA and we tossed out the hitdie, saves etc but kept the racial skills. It worked out pretty well untill our monk accidently managed to age the world by 25 years ( i died of old age insid an evil animator house) Anyways keep in mind that animals have a hard time doing things that humanoids take for granted ..like opening doors ,drawers etc. Also natural attacks dont benifit from multiple attacks from high base attack bonus(may be wrong but thats what my dm said) Also short of having magic fang perma cast on you youll never over come some monsters damage reduction ( unless your a amonk..i think..

You could always try out the Anthro animals from Savage Species but a few of them are disgustingly overpowered (Anthro Baleen Whale for example).

Leopard from the SRD is really good. Alot of abilites including pounce (Full attack on a charge) and Rake (2 extra attacks on a charge or a grapple) and good stats
