I have a dream for this race. Enter the Mountain gnome

+2 constitution, -2 intelligence and charisma.

small size

base speed 20 ft

Dark vision: 60 ft

Powerful Build.

+2 racial saving throw vs transmutation

+2 racial bonus to listen checks

Gnomes with an intelligence of 10 or higher may cast the 0-level spells magehand, mending, open/close each once per day

favored class: Transmuter

The question, how wrong is it to have a small race with powerful build?

Small race, powerful build? Been done, IIRC. The Redcap in MM3 has it.

Favored class should be wizard, though. 'Transmuter' isn't a class. :)

I'm a 3.0'er (yes, I know, I'm ashamed)

and the original gnome has illusionist as it's favored class.

the question though, is, is it unbalancing, has anyone played a small race with pb and have insight?

well the stats seem to contradict the favored class ... which I really like btw, I don't think the powerful build would break this race.

They seem like a degenerative bunch of misfits with ancestral history of magic use.

3.0 gnomes favored class was Illusionist. Several off races have different Specilist Wizard types as a favored class.

Also, I assume that Powerful Build on a small character allows them to be considered Medium, not large, right?
Because small characters should not count as large for the purposes of weapon size and grappling and such.

yes, thanks for the mention of that. Powerful build does make them medium, I see them as similar in size to a Dwarf, but just below the limit, instead of just above it.

Yeah... transmuters with an intelligence penalty? effing weird...
but I'm rolling with it.
