They have a +7 LA, which is abhorrent for spellcasters, but they start casting spells as a 7th level sorcerer, and sorc levels stack with this bonus.

So is there any serious drawback to being a Rakshasa sorcerer? With the amazing bonuses and abilities, is the only negative that you have to be lawful evil?

*EDIT* I just noticed I crippled the word Rakshasa

Hit Dice count as levels. A level 1 Rakaasha sorcerer is a level 15 character (and thus a level 8 spellcaster, no match for a level 15 spellcaster unless he's able to get into melee quickly).

You mean other than the 7 HD they also come with? So that you're starting with an ECL of 14?

Other than that, no probably nothing wrong with it.

Haha, I completely looked over the racial HD. I guess I shouldn't read through books when I'm tired.

On the bright side, they can qualify as an Eldritch Knight for their first character level.

That's wierd, I'd never thought of being able to start as a PrC without having any other classes.

I don't know if the Eldrich knights caster levels would stack with the racial ability to cast. The fake sorcerer levels only stack with levels of sorcerer per the MM entry.

As far as the relative levels, consider the sorcer casting ability to go with the 7 hit dice rather than the LA. When you consider that, sorcerer levels that get a D8 hit die, full BAB, and 8 skill points per hd. That is one kickass sorcerer! So all you have to contend with is the +7 LA and the abilities that go with that.

+7 LA then give you bonuses to every stat, 40 move, Dark vision, +9 Nat ac, natural weapons, Detect thoughts at will, shape change, DR, SR.... Did I miss any thing? That is a long list of goodies.

That said, I would not take sorcerer. As mentioned above the MM entry says only that the 7 sorcerer levels stack with actual levels of the sorcerer class, which is subpar to the stuff it already has. The bonus to charisma ensures that the save DC's will track with status effect spells, but you just won't get the good stuff. I would multiclass into something that benfits from the ability to meet requirements but does not have the caster progession that won't stack with your innate abilities.

Suggestions:
Dragon Disciple - A flying firebreathing Rakshasa with +8 to strength and the other half dragon goodies. The bonus spells you get DO stack with your Sorc levels.

Monk - Forget the high level monk stuff, just getting the unarmed fighting on top of your Rakshasa abilities rocks!

Ninja - For the defensive abilities and already being a master of deception

Don't try to specialize in any one thing, the Con bonus, DR and SR make this a very tough character. You can fight, you can cast spells and you can look like May Parker while doing it.

Good Rakshasa build:

Bard1/AnotherClass2/SublimeChord

Insert whatever second class you'd like. Marshal and Swordsage come to mind.
