| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-16-07, 02:42 AM | This is my first ever race, and is intended to give the Small races a good LA:+0 frontliner. Also note to anyone who knows a good Small frontliner...i only have the basic books, so take into account that I do not know of an LA:+0 Small melee specialist race. They are also hopefully different enought from dwarves. So anyway, onto business! :fight!::fight!:KELPERANS:fight!::fight! : Kelperans are wanderers at heart, and most have at some point done mercenary work. They are around 4' tall and thin, and have slightly overlong legs. They are pale, with black, platinum, blue or lemon yellow hair, and can grow stubble, although not beards/moustaches. They favour doublets when not in armour bashing things for cash. History: Nobody is certain, but they are most likely a subrace of halflings with a bit of dwarf ancestry mixed in. Nobody can really pin one down for long enough to inquire properly. They lack a country, which is why they are prone to wanderlust and mercenary work. They seem to have originated in rainforest regions, and have had a long mastery with ropes. They have no culture of their own, having no country, but they fit in with most places they come into with ease. For this they have good realtionships with humans, gnomes and halflings. Half-Orcs have mixed feelings, dwarves are amiable but still a bit suspicious, and elves have no idea why they would move out of the comfortable forest and move into the city. Overall, Kelperans most like half-elves, and the feeling is mutual. Both have no nations (probably; half elf nations could exist, but are/would be rare) and each adapts to the humanoids around it. They have been known to fight for religion, if only for Fharlaghn and allegedly once for Kord, including one famous example against orcs accosting travelers. It was...successful, to say the least. To this day, Kelperans and orcs still have a longlasting enmity between each other. Kelperans HATE traps. When they get caught in a trap, they mutter and groan and describe to anyone nearby elaborate plans of how to kill anyone that set said trap, how traps should be outlawed, and why anybody who lays a trap should be denied an afterlife, if one should exist. Names Male; Aedon, Aedred, Aydan, Dimiltrie, Farian, Fyldran, Holgrim, Ivrion, Kaelin, Karolas, Koidra, Kolbane, Lohannas, Navara, Nixion, Poisandra, Sandar, Sarka, Slonar, Skith, Truvane, Varkade, Ylodes. Female; Aasilon, Aasiron, Cyadra, Draeth, Elianda, Firil, Fyndra, Hanai, Jadrea, Kamdril, Kildria, Lirsa, Ophaldri, Pandyra, Pyrisa, Qualia, Siriod, Symdaria, Tuvasta, Uldar, Vaxillia, Yendral. Affectations; Bloodylips, Coldblood, Duelingblood, Fraycharger, Gnomehurler, Headlopper, Keenedge, Quickwit, Swiftblade. Age: Kelperans live to around 120 years, but mature quickly and are at the equivalent of 20 human years at the age of 10. They become elderly at the late age of c.100 years, but owing to their preferred occupation, rarely live that long. Size: Small. Base speed: 30 feet. They have overlong legs and are naturally fleet of foot. Stats: Con +2, Wis -2. Kelperans are unwise, but are incredible sturdy for a race possessed of such a small frame. Favoured Class: Fighter (or, if you have Complete Warrior, then possibly Swashbuckler). Most Kelperans follow the path of the mercenary. Ear for Business: Kelperans gain +2 to Listen checks, having overheard business opportunities for generations. Will to Live: Kelperans are never knocked unconscious. When reduced to -1 to -9 hit points, they still lose one every turn and have a chance to stabilize, but can still fight, although they count as being fatigued and move at half speed. Weather Resistance: Kelperans have resistance 5 to cold damage. They are used to less than hospitable weather. Halfing Ancestry: Kelperans count as halflings for all magic items that have special qualities to do with halfings. Alignment: Usually True or Chaotic Neutral. Lawfuls are very rare, and good Kelperans and evil Kelperans are pretty much equal in number Religion: For most, Fharlanghn. Language: Common plus two others that are race/area specific and cannot be anything flashy like Drow, Aquan or Draconic. Can be Undercommon. LA: +0. |
| towerwrath02-16-07, 02:46 AM | seams a little bare |
| Tiarn02-16-07, 04:45 AM | Well, first I would agree with Towerwrath. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on here. It's a small race with a skill bonus and a bonus and penalty to Con and Wis. If there is inspiration enough to create an entirely new race I would think that a little more should be done, otherwise why bother? Secondly, from this post I know absolutely nothing about this race, aside from a bit of physical description and that they prefer to be mercenaries. Do they have a history? Why were they created, and by what deity? How do they get along with the other races? What are their traditions? What is their culture like? How old are they at maturity? There is not even really the minimal amount needed to actually play this race. I'm not saying you aren't doing a good job, I'm just saying your job isn't done yet. :) |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-16-07, 04:50 AM | Hmm you're right...I'll edit it. So yeah. |
| YabaTheWhat02-16-07, 10:37 AM | This KELPERANS Size: Small. [0 FP (package)] Base speed: 30 feet. They have overlong legs and are naturally fleet of foot. [6 FP (+10 ft)] Stats: Con +2, Wis -2. Kelperans are unwise, but are incredible sturdy for a race possessed of such a small frame. [+4-3 = 1 FP] Favoured Class: Fighter. Most Kelperans follow the path of the mercenary. Skill Bonuses: Kelperans gain +2 to Listen checks from overhearing business opportunities. [1 FP] Language: Common plus two others that are race/area specific and cannot be anything flashy like Drow, Aquan or Draconic. Can be Undercommon. [0.25 FP (3rd language)] LA: +0. Total = 8 FP, LA+0 underpowered. They're still a little bland and a little weak. Give them another 2-5 FP and they'll be balanced against the core races. Options to bring them up to speed include (but are not limited to): Additial 2-4 skill bonuses +2 per bonus for 1 FP each Darkvision 60 ft for 3 FP Zero-level spell-like abilities for 1 FP per ability per daily use One first-level spell-like ability (such as Enlarge Person) useable once per day for 4 FP A single +2 boost to a second ability score (not CON) for 4 FP Removing the WIS penalty for 3 FP Weapon familiarity (exotic weapon becomes martial or martial becomes simple) at 0.5 FP per weapon Save bonus vs specific effects (such as sleep) for 0.25 FP per point Save bonus vs categories (such as poison) for 0.5 FP per point Bonus to all saves of a specific type (WILL/FORT/REF) at 2 FP per point per type. Also, reword the skill bonus entry for listen checks. As currently written, it sounds like they only get the skill bonus when they're trying to overhear a business opportunity (as opposed to getting it because they're used to listening for business opportunities). |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-16-07, 03:18 PM | I had edited them, but when I tried to save, it had gone into downtime. Argh. Now they should be different and better. Maybe even a bit overpowered with will to live, but that can always be fixed. BTW, thanks for the feedback to everyone. |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-17-07, 02:55 PM | Took away rope stuff |
| towerwrath02-18-07, 12:10 AM | looks much better. |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-21-07, 11:53 PM | :bump: |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-23-07, 02:50 AM | I've added names, and I hope Will to Live+Weather Resistance isn't overpowered. |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster03-13-07, 01:22 AM | Bump bump bumpity bump argh red dragon. |
| obrysii03-13-07, 09:53 AM | Having Resistence 5 to three elemental types seems a bit overpowered for LA +0. |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster03-24-07, 02:07 AM | Point taken. The post is duly edited. Now its only to cold, which doesn't come up as frequently as fire and possibly lightning anyway. |
| enygmatic_me03-24-07, 02:19 AM | These make me think of Strongheart Halflings. Not bad. I would really like to see more flavor text. |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster04-13-07, 02:30 AM | There is now a bit more flavour text, including a bit upon how they wish death upon placers of traps (if they happen to stumble into one; if one fries a bunch of orc, Kelperans don't mind so much) |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster04-13-07, 09:41 AM | I may be playtesting this race soon, in my first campaign. I'm an elf, sure, but I plan to utilise Leadershp and have a Kelperan cohort. |
