| GAMBLE_d1303-21-07, 10:07 AM | Hey, we just got RotW and as I was building my Wood Ranger/Druid, I came across the Killoren. Now first thought was, wow, these guys are awesome, second thought was, hang on, everything I've always thought Elves should be, these guys are. They are Fey, that litterally live forever, and manifest power from nature. Statiscally they are not much different from Elves. So our group decided to turf the old Elves, and give Killoren +2 Dex, -2 Con (or the appropriate Elven subraces modifiers), and give the little guys Reverie rather than sleep. Now we have Elves that seem Elven. Any thoughts on the ACTUAL Killoren, or my groups Killoren-Elves, would be cool. Peace. EDIT: Note: Our "Killoren-Elves" look like Elves not Killoren, we are just using the mechanics and some of the fluff. |
| Jaxgaret03-21-07, 06:05 PM | Looking at the Killoren's stats, I realize now that they're basically variant Elves. Didn't notice that before. Good catch :) Looks fine to me. |
| TheDarkPrince03-21-07, 11:41 PM | Where is the Killoren found?? |
| Borris03-22-07, 12:30 AM | In Races of the Wild, in the "other races" chapter |
| GAMBLE_d1303-22-07, 04:23 AM | Aye, they are in RotW, it just a small section, a shame really, they should have gotten a big write up like the Raptorans. I just found it strange that they wou8ld take elves who are eant to live forever and then give them a Max Age, then take Killoren (a newly invented race) and let them live for ever (they don't die from old age... Ever!). That's what made me start comparing them to elves, and then discover that they "are" Elves, they just look funny :P |
| Zumarai03-22-07, 07:12 AM | The only thing that bothers me about Killoren is that they look like a creature of the Plant type. |
| GAMBLE_d1303-22-07, 08:55 AM | That's why my group changed them to look like Elves (actually we deleted Elves from the game, and replaced them with Killoren, then named the Killoren Elves and made them look like Elves should look like). |
| Zumarai03-22-07, 09:15 AM | That's why my group changed them to look like Elves (actually we deleted Elves from the game, and replaced them with Killoren, then named the Killoren Elves and made them look like Elves should look like). That's cool; I've always felt Elves should have a stronger tie to Fey. |
| GhostStepper03-22-07, 02:44 PM | The only thing that bothers me about Killoren is that they look like a creature of the Plant type. Doesnt the descripitive text say they actually look like half-elves? I guess the artists took a little artistic license. |
| Shinryouga03-22-07, 06:18 PM | Love them, wish I could use them/have them used by players more. |
| n3ro03-22-07, 07:36 PM | oren is my name...killoren doesn't sound good to me, glad you call them elves now...:rimshot: |
| nighttree03-22-07, 10:52 PM | Doesnt the descripitive text say they actually look like half-elves? I guess the artists took a little artistic license. The pictures look WAY to "alien" and "plant" like IMO....we describe them as bieng very "exotic" looking Half-Elves. Remind me that I need to finish working on my "Killoren Aspect Adept"..... |
| Zumarai03-23-07, 03:47 AM | Remind me that I need to finish working on my "Killoren Aspect Adept"..... A Fey-themed Warlock/Dragonfire Adept type class would be killer. |
| TheCarrionCrawler03-23-07, 10:53 AM | The pictures look WAY to "alien" and "plant" like. I always thought the same thing...at least I know that I wasn't the only one! Races of the Wild was my least favorite of the Races of... series. I like new races, and the "Other Races" section was far too short and boring for my tastes. The Killoren was the only one that stood out, but the picture ruined it for me. |
| Arcane Guyver03-23-07, 02:45 PM | I rather liked the picture. In a way, this race is supposed to be fairly alien and quite mysterious. I'd rather keep them the way they are as a somewhat frightening new species that is noticably increasing in number. Elves gravitate towards arcane magic (albiet in a tree-hugging manner), and killoren are the natural 'nature mages.' And for the record, I really wish that the new races primarily featured in the "Race of" books would have been Raptoran, Killoren, and Catfolk. Goliaths are unnecessary with half-orcs around, and illumians are just unnecessary, period. |
| UnknownMourner03-23-07, 04:21 PM | I have 4 elemental races in my game with +1 LA. I use the killoren as the earth race. It goes back to an elemental planar war. Anyway, I equalized the 3 meditations (one was a little weak if i remember) and gave them tree shape 1/day, and +2 Wis. The picture can be found in the art gallery of the Wizards sight and cut and pasted into your homebrew document. |
| Moon-Lancer04-07-07, 04:39 AM | I Also don't like the look of killoren. I love the stats and descriptions though, but they need to fire the artist who did that picture, or at least have them never do fey creatures... ever. I think fey should really be much more provocative. I am playing a killoren now that is also a monk fighter barbarian dervish, and when he goes into dervish dance he is hears music of the fair folk (he was a orphaned at a temple) and goes into a fighting whirlwind trance of death. anyway, here is a wip of his picture. http://www.photonmoon.com/images/imagegallery/rowen_wip.jpg |
| Midnight_v04-07-07, 06:22 AM | I was inspired by them and they're look they I started a "Rise of the Fey" campaign using them as the major villians. Nature created them as a replacment for the old guardians of nature who failed leaning more towards arcane and non-druidic divine magic. So nature fires the elves and evolves these. If you study history/folklore/mythology you'll find tha Fey are generally not "little elves" fairies pixes etc... and that about 50% of them are hideous and or strange. There are too many elf like races/variants/subraces already it really makes me wonder is it fanboyism like so many people say. I mean so many people want to make a "Link" or a "Drizzt" clone, "or a beautiful elf maiden. Just gets played out you know. I like them cause they are not beautiful and really look like they embody natures wrath. I had them in the campaign, not just preserve nature but to expand it. I mean like once every few days casting plant growth and every other level casting awaken on trees and plants in an attempt to make a hivemind "living forest". They'd kill anyone who "attacks" the forest like we defend cities, but can be reasoned with except that they veiw elves as they're natural enemies so they're an elf resistant race. They ally with all manner of fey and well.... "Rise" against the humanoid races but mostly they're just expanding the forest in the same way we tame the land to build cities. They are the perfect misunderstood villian. |
| meriadoc10-13-07, 08:39 AM | ha! glad to see I'm not the only one who didn't like the killoren picture. the face is a bit too much animal-like. not a bad idea to let them replace the elves. Their background is very interesting and fun to roleplay with. not the defensive kind of forestshepperd that shuns all contact, but an active, curious and ambitious race that wants to explore the human world and is willing to adapt to it. |
| GuyrtheadamantineOne10-13-07, 01:16 PM | And for the record, I really wish that the new races primarily featured in the "Race of" books would have been Raptoran, Killoren, and Catfolk. Goliaths are unnecessary with half-orcs around, and illumians are just unnecessary, period. Can't agree here, I always saw Catfolk as the least interesting race in RotW. Illumians aren't really cool, but with truename magic they might have a greater backstory. And for goliaths, I would mix them with neandertals from Frostburn. Killoren are cooler on the image, coz' they shouldn't look like any humanoid. They are nature incarnate, not ''fairies turned human'', much like elves. |
| elonin10-14-07, 08:02 AM | Killoren are a great race. Thematically I'm reminded of Puck from "a midsummer nights dream". |
| Aleolus10-15-07, 11:15 AM | I like the Killoren, but I think they're a bit overpowered for no LA. I think they're worth at least a +1 LA, but I don't know. |
| elonin10-15-07, 12:15 PM | I like the Killoren, but I think they're a bit overpowered for no LA. I think they're worth at least a +1 LA, but I don't know. How so? They have no stat bonuses. Instead they have bonuses to some skills, the aspect thing (which mostly leads to skill bonuses) and the fey type. I'm not experienced with LA rules but that is comparable with any phb race |
| Aleolus10-15-07, 12:23 PM | ...You know, now that I look them over again, they don't actually get much. Maybe I was mistaken. |
| elonin10-15-07, 12:35 PM | They are great thematically and I would play one anyway. Wish they had some stat bonuses (which would likely give a LA) PS Can't find rules about LA. People mention savage species which i don't have. if i'm playing a +1 EL race i know that I set back my progression. Does your first character level grant the x4 skill points or would you loose that with your first level is taken by the race you are playing? |
