Personally, I like Kobolds. I was just wondering what others thought of them. Not just in general, but like, what classes they're good at and such.

For instance, I think they make good rogues because of their +2 Dex, +1 natural AC, small size and bonus to speed (really, evens out to medium)... and the draconic ritual thing, Draconic Rite of Passage, I think. I do own Races of the Dragon btw.

I agree about them being good rouges, ecspecially with their darkvision (no attack roll penalties in the dark) and +2 search checks to find traps. Also, a rouge's sneak attack makes up for kobold's -4 strength penalty.

Another great class for them is the Scout from Complete Adventurer. Just give 'em a long spear and send them on their merry way (with feats geared toward spring attack).

Also, any spell caster is a pretty good choice for the kobolds to choose, since they dont deal with strength all that much (less then rogues) and that net bonus of +3 AC vs a human is pretty handy at low levels.

Heck, I even once made a kobold barbarian and had a great time with him. He wasnt that great, but in the end it was a lot of fun.

Ever since I got the kobold sorcerer mini way back when, I've played 3 of them. They were all so fun. Just don't forget color spray and sleep. The first one didn't have that, and it didn't end well for him.

Heh, I've actually visited that one.

But other than this beig a Kobold fanboy/fangirl club, I want to see what other people think Kobolds would be good at.

I like druids a good bit. I think Kobolds make... alright druids (unless you go venerable dragonwrought, in which case they're awesome) because although they don't have a penalty to mental stats, they do have a penalty to Con and don't really keep much when they wildshape. However, the -1 modifier to Con isn't really a big deal, so I'd certainly play a Kobold druid. I did read in Races of the Dragon that most Kobold druids dislike their people because Kobolds screw the earth over for natural resources, so that would be interesting.

Oh, and last note on Kobold druid... dire badger mount! Or dire weasel. Still, get a dire badger and apply that template from MM2 (the one that makes it war trained)... good times.

I've also considered wererat Kobold. Partly because there's a Wererat Rogue miniature. I mean, it may not be the best idea for making a good character because you get a LA of +3 (1 which gives HD), but you get some feats, some DR (5/silver), some natural armor (+3), 2 to each save, a net of -4 Str, +8 Dex, +2 Wis... and a diseased bite. Would be neat, I think.

And a Kobold ranger taking the racial substitution level gets a better animal companion than a normal ranger.

Alright, that's it for me for now. I appreciate the comments everyone!

With the Web Enhancements on the WoTC site, they make great sorcerers with their Rite of Draconic Passage.

I like making a Kobold Totemist. The damage is independent of the size and I love putting a powerhouse Kobold who is a melee powerhouse.

One of my players was a dragonwrought Kobold Warlock, that was quite amusing. The kobold can actually be an incredibly potent caster, if only because they have an incredible degree of defensive power...that and a Kobold Swordsage with setting sun as his focus...

Well, anything that isn't purely STR-based is good for a kobold.
Fighters are still good with a Weapon Finesse build or an archer build. A Kobold Barbarian could be interesting, they would gain a "normal" STR while raging, and would still enjoy the net +3 to AC (DEX, NA, Size).

i think kobolds are good for killing :smirk: but if i had to play one it would most definatly be Rogue 4/scorpion heritor 5(Sandstorm pg. 86) they make a great combo, the sneak attacks stack and the envenom blade has some definate advantages when sneaking in the dark :hides: both rougue and scorpion H. are sneaky and leathal but the scorp. is fast so the kobold is a + for size

Well out of two Kobold PC's I've seen and the one I've played I'd have to say that Kobolds make awesome rogue and spellcasters, no one ever suspects Kobolds of being anything more then a minor nussaince so it makes it real easy for them to perform assassinations without a hitch.

A Kobold Dragonfire Adept is pretty cool too, particularly if it's a Dragonwrought.

I didn't consider that... massive speed bonus. Too bad can't throw in Barbarian.

And this is... kind of on topic. What do people think of Psionic Kobolds? Although I have XPH, I'm not too big into Psionics, but today my brother brought up his desire to play a Pyrokineticist. So yeah, what do people think of Psionic Kobolds?

Pyro and Cyro (Frostburn) kineticist are great for small creatures like Kobolds.

rouge is a good choice with the bonus on hide checks due to size, and the natural armour bonus and the size armour bonus. Could make a lightly armored kobold with surprizingly high A.C.. Sorcerors are also pretty neat because the Phb says sorcerors are often from (but not limited to) draconic heritage, and seing as kobolds are draconic, it makes sense. However, you would only really play a kobold for role playing oportunities as the CR for a 1st level warrior is some fraction like 1/4 i think, as opposed to the elf and dwarves of 1/2.

Kobolds were enginered and designed to be weak NPC's, not PC's so it is not a wise choice unless you want to feel special or ironic for playing something that your previous characters have slaughtered by the tens if not hundreds.

Tried that once with one of my cohorts, provided you know how to use them they can be pretty good. Mind you I'm not really a big of Psions in general but I have to admit I do like the idea of a Kobold Psion.
In my opinion out of the Psion class, Keneticist and Egoist are the best for Kobolds because of the powers they get from them.

Asides from Pyro's and Cryokenetics, Diamond Dragons make for the best prestigue classes.

Can a Pyroclastic dragonwrought kobold gestlat monk/sorcerer become a dragon-disciple? (a special Pyroclastic disciple who has cone with half fire half sonic damage?)

Sounds good actually, just a tail is needed.

I've thought of playing a Kobold Fighter with crossbow. If you can muster the Con for Improved Natural Armor, along with all the other feats you'll want(point blank, precise, etc.) you can make a pretty good crossbow archer. Better if you use a repeater, but rapid reload can work. Also helps if your DM will allow Crossbow Sniper(PHB2) to be used with repeaters. Overall it could be a fun(and effective) character.

Last Kobold I played was actually in a gestalt game....artificer/sorcerer was a really fun character being specialized in traps we finished off at lvl 6 though woulda liked to play him more but the rest of the party didn't share my survival instinct and it was messy but I lived at least. Was thinking about going renigade master maker or dragonheart mage but never got the chance.

Kobolds are really cool little guys. In one of our first games with just the 3.0 core books and a throw-in Module (Castle Zadrian by AEG), we picked up Gurlzick the Magnificent, a Kobold Sorc 5. We grabbed him as an NPC and levelled him to 20 (because we had no Epic rules for levels over 20 at the time). He was quite the righteous artillery for the party.

Right now, I've got a Kobold Sorc3/Druid4... can't wait for Wild Shape. He's also got the Sculpt Self Feat, so he looks like a 3rd degree burn victim with steel skin that casts Produce Flame at will as a spell-like ability.

Wow, those Dragon magazine feats sure are fun... :mage:

I chose a wolf as an animal companion, so I would have a really fast ride that can track. I gave him a Ring of Fire Resistance so that he wouldn't burn when I get the next Sculpt Self level (Inferno Creature - essentially I will be a walking torch)

Going for that whole "Ghost Rider" look... :evillaugh

I had one that was Rog 4/ Ftr 2/ Lasher 5, I also had applied Air Genasi like a template for +1 LA but that was more for his flavor and background than any real bonuses (they get waaaay more penalties than bonuses). While growing up in very magic oriented city he pretended (along with his boss/foster) that he was a Homonculous. While adventuring he wore a hooded robe(looked allot like a jawa) so no one realized what he was. That was fun playing up the whole mysterious hooded short swashbuckling style hero-type. That was in 3.0, if CW and CAd would have been out yet I would have gone Swashy instead of Fighter, maybe even taken levels in that Vigilante PrC. Hmmm... I have so many fun character concepts I'd like to try out and quite a few, but not all are Kobolds.

This past spring semester at college we ran an all-kobold, semi-gestalt campaign, and it was probably one of my favorite games ever. (By 'semi-gestalt,' I mean that we were gestalt, but one 'side' had to be an NPC class.) I thought we'd all be dead by the end of the first session, but it turns out that kobolds can do a little of everything, and we eventually made it to 5th level before the end of the semester. Our characters:

-Half Red Dragon 3 (using the savage progression template class)/Paladin of Tyranny 2//Warrior 5 (that was me - and I was a beast with a dire pick and a Str of like 20 or 22!)
-Sorceror 2/Kobold Paragon 3//Warrior 5
-Cleric 4/Rogue 1//Expert 5
-Warlock 5/Adept 5 (the best character - he had a Str of around 3, and a Con so low that, at 5th level, had like 11 hit points; however, he could do all kinds of stuff with invocations and adept spells).

And the best thing ever? The first real BBEG we had to fight was a gnome wizard (who else would kobolds fight, after all?) who just happened to specialize in fire spells. As in, that's basically all he had prepped. So, being immune to fire, most of his spells were useless against me :D .

If they're like other Reptiles in the real world then they mate once a year. So the female kobold probably has to wait a year. However they are Humanoids, so I say no less than a few days after the next fertilization. If even that, they could instantly fertilize the eggs from sperm held in for years. I could see Kobold females in the cave once or twice (maybe more) a year laying dozens of eggs once after another probably with different fathers for each batch. After all Kobolds do seem to breed fast, theres always a surplus of Kobolds around.

The book says they lay 1 eggs after 2 weeks, 10% chance of 2 eggs. It also says that they have a fast cycle. And they most tribes have 1 egg and 1 child per ten. So it would be to me once every 60 days or 2weeks after laying the egg. I wanted to get as close as possible. We are playing dragons and got 1d10 kobolds to start with. I was wanting to know how fast they could build population.

Use your Dragon magic to speed things up, assuming you are high enough level. If you go by RAW it should be 2 weeks, since they can only lay 1 egg (maybe 2) every 2 weeks. If your big enough, I'd would go out and get other slaves too, maybe some goblins, humans, and several Uber Hulks. Assuming you are guarding your lair.

We are still baby dragons now, just hatched a month ago. We don't have magic because we are planar dragons. So she has to wait till 11 and I have to wait till 10 to multi class. Could there be any thing in dragon magic book? I might just rule it a month? That would be easier in game any way. All kobold in my world are DW. How do the reg dragons do it I wonder?

Well the Red Dragons usually inherit many of their Kobold slaves from their parents. Dragons no matter how "evil" they seem to be are very kind parents, so an older dragon would give the young one his/her first kobold slaves by the time he/she was able to go out and find his/her own lair. Thats my guess. Just House rule it if the rules are unclear, thats why they have Rule 0 there for.

I think I'll go with the 3 months. When they are trying to increase pop and once a year any other time. That should increase it pretty good. Thanks!

If it matter dragons mate once a year and lay 1d4+1 eggs. But they live longer then kobolds so I think it makes sense that they can produce more eggs a year.

Dragonfire adept can be kinda fun as can a warlock. A conjurer could be ammusing as well or a twisted little abjurer. Even though you said you were trying to steer away form sorcerer a wizard/sor/ultamate magus might be kinda funny as well especially if you lord your odviously superior magical talent over the other spellcasters in the group.

Kobolds? All I can say about kobolds is
ULTIMATE MAGUS.

Why? The Greater Draconic Rite of Passage nets you an extra caster level for Sorcerer without increasing your hitdie or character level. Which means Ultimate Magus is a 11/10 class for the Wizard side.

Yeah, something to ride on could work really well... depending on what you're after. If you ride around your animal companion, when you buff yourself it gets the buffs too. Whoa!

But if you want to go shaper druid, or just aren't interested in mounted combat, I'd say something quick... a flanker, maybe, for a shaper, or a big tank for a caster.

But beyond that, I remember reading somewhere that all famous Kobolds were Dragonwrought or Half-Dragon (or Kuturmulak). Anyone think of famous normal Kobold(s)?

I'm currently playing an online game with Damiik, a white dragonwraught kobold in Eberron, currently a Sorc 6/Frostmage 6 who likes Draconic Polymorph and War Troll forms.

He, uh, hits hard. Really hard. His AC is also out of this world.

Remember, folks, Damiik will inherit the world!

I'm also designing a kobold psion for another campaign coming up, this on tabletop. He'd be a blue dragonwraught desert kobold (desert kobolds from UA/Hypertext d20), with a tentative build of Shaper 5/Anarchic Initiate 3, and moving into Constructor 10 after that. His main schtick, of course, will be beefy Astral Constructs, flavorfully made from sand and cystals he forms from ectoplasm. He'll also have Earth Power (Races of Stone), which will cement his connection with the earth and sand.

Think Gaara from Naruto, except smaller, scaly, and blue.

Then there's what one can do with a kobold and Races of the Dragon. Check out my sig.

Working towards half-dragon. From there, the hope is the DM allows my half-dragon draconic progression class...

Those little scaled adventurer bait sometimes have a lot more bite (or bark) than it seems... I'll end up with a net score to strength of 15 next level, and (through bonuses and a stats rolled for a high-powered campaign) only one score with a bonus of +1 or less. Charisma of 20, Intimdate +12, 2' 7" tall, 46 lbs. Umm, ?

I've always been a fan of those scaly little blighters. I can't say no to a race that has so many uses as both player material and as a foe of the party.

I played a kobold "battle sorceror" variant from Unearthed Arcana some time ago in an Eberron campaign, and he was a hoot. The Psuedodragon familiar was a fun little addition, too. The little bugger was a quick witted and stubborn dragonling:D . I thought it was fun playing the underdog...albiet an underdog with the propensity for blowing up fools.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I love kobolds >.> they are my favorite race! In 3.0 i had a kobold fighter weilding dual bladed gauntlets, lets just say he was considered the MVP of the party, and when we had to make a choice of who to heal first, the cleric chose me :D

Kobolds can't be blue! How can you say you have a blue kobold unless it's dragonwraught?

To the rules your PC can be any color you want him/her to be.

Well if he's dragonwraught he is usually the color of his heritage....

but if you read MM his color ranges from like reddish brown to brown O_o but yet you look at pictures of kobolds and many of them are green which I like better.

but yeah, a blue kobold thats not dragonwraught? COME ON!

The entry inMM is for the DM and is not rules for how they look. It just means that is what is normal. Most red dragons are red but there was one online that was white. An odd ball can happen and players should feel free to make the color of their PC's any thing they want. With in reasons. Maybe this one was born with blue skin DNA instead of the reg brown.

I'm designing a campaign with humans, elves, dwarves, merfolk, and kobolds as playable races, and I'm thinking of a way to balance kobolds with the other races.

Here's my idea: I'm thinking of making it so Kobolds can choose to take levels in Dragon Disciple no matter without having to meet the requirements. I'm also thinking about giving them not only the ability to become a half-dragon, but to be able to temporarily transform into dragons for a few rounds ala Breath of Fire.

Would that work at all? If so, has anyone got anything similar statted-out?

Well, Kobolds are usually the underdog which is why they're so popular. If you really want to make Kobolds more balance I would consider giving them, Greater Draconic Rite of Passage (which gives them +1 sorcerer level) for free. However I would take away their natural armor, and maybe their dex bonus.

Hmm, I just thought of one. Meepo. He's famous, not dragonwrought or half-dragon, and he's even good. Lawful good. Go Meepo!

Dan

In my campaign, Meepo got exploded. As did that whole tribe of kobolds. There was no way we were letting them have our dragon. I mean, we found it, it was ours, right? The DM ruled that the dragon ended up liking us because, well, it started to like the Goblins when they fed it slightly less filth as opposed to complete filth. We fed it actual meat, and boy oh boy did we have a nice little white dragon pet.

I just really like the idea of some enemies cornering a kobold, thinking that he won't put up a fight, and getting their arses whupped when the kobold hulks out into a red dragon.

Maybe I could make the Dragonshape spell a class feature for the Dragon Disciple? That way the kobold could turn into the type of dragon they are descended from.

Kobold with the i kick your ass template! No seriusly Dragonwrought (black) Kobold with everything he can possibly get out of that feat and the ability to become any dragon he wants of any age category (epic artifact he found), 15 lvl rouge, 10 lvl sorcerer, 5 lvl wizard. I also have a lvl 3 Warblade, lvl 1 swordsage, lvl 1 crusader kobold, with the house rule feat specialised training (must be taken be fore 5th lvl change your favored class to whatever you like, replaces old favored class) to make his favored class warblade.

What do I think of kobolds?
Kobolds ate my baby! (http://www.koboldsatemybaby.com/)

Honestly, I've never considered them much more than goblins, hobgoblins, gnolls, other small amusing/annoying races. I think it would be great fun to have a campaign comprised solely of smaller "monster" races.

"Why would anyone want to make a thread about kobolds? They are the mooks, dweebs, and screw ups of DnD. They are dumber than orcs, weaker than goblins, and are good for nothing besides zerging the PC's in huge swarms...and they STILL get crushed like ants! Kobolds are ridiculous. They can be used as cannon fodder against level one PC's, and nothing else. The only thi-"

Going to be playing a Kobold Druid with a mage breed dire rat. Gonna ride it when it gets to the right size.

Why not dire weasel?

Dunno. I just like the idea of a kobold riding a big white rat. Thinking about going vermine lord. If not that, at least something that focuses on the small, often overlooked creepy crawlers of the world.

If your going vermin lord You could get a vermin mount.

Do what kobolds are know for...build traps! Rogue, Ninja, or Factotum(Dungeonscape) + Trapsmith(Dungeonscape as well) + all those wonderful little feats that help trappers. I haven't had the oppertunity to play one but i've completely fleshed one out, ready to play, at lvl 10 and he looks like he'd be very VERY difficult to deal with.

Maybe i'll send him against the PCs in my next campaign.

I've played a Kobold Sor/Monk/Enlightened Fist/Swiftblade before, and it was actually really effective. Grabbed the Sor/Monk feat that stacks levels in both to determine bonuses and the like, and the Greater Draconic Rite.

He was a pretty nasty little scrapper. DM had to surround me when I (The player, not the character) wasn't paying attention and have a whole bunch of people grapple me with assisting in order to actually do anything :)

He was pretty nasty.

I've decided. The next time my group plays a more off the hook campaign i'm gonna play a Kobold Sorc who loves Explosive Runes and any other surprise sort of explosions. He's gonna be a real twichy little guy. :D

I like making a Kobold Totemist. The damage is independent of the size and I love putting a powerhouse Kobold who is a melee powerhouse.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the natural attacks are not independent of size. On page 54 of Magic of Incarnum there's a little blurb on damage values. The damage values given for soulmelds that grant natural weapons are for Medium characters. Meldshapers larger or smaller than Medium should adjust these damage values as normal for weapons of sizes other than Medium (see page 114 of the Player's Handbook).True, it's very easy to miss since it's so well-hidden. I still wouldn't dismiss a Kobold Totemist. Sure, they do take a Constitution penalty, but they're one of the few LA+0 races that have natural weapons (if you go by the Web Enhancement and if you seriously intend to play one of these guys your DM would be insane not to let you) and armor. Put on ankheg breastplate for an armor bonus that stacks with your natural armor and can be boosted with essentia yet has no armor check penalty, and dread carapace for a damage boost on all your natural weapons. Most Totemists have to wait until level 2 to gain natural weapons through a totem chakra bind, but with a Kobold Totemist it's doable at first level. It nicely counters your Strength penalty too.

Futhermore, some of the Totemist soulmelds grant ranged attacks with no saves, which are perfect for Kobolds since their Constitution scores, used for calculating the Save DCs of Totemist soulmelds, tend to be smaller than other Totemists'.

Besides, as Dragonblooded creatures Kobolds have access to Dragonic soulmelds, found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060912a&page=4).

Ever try a kobold barbarian. It's wierd, but you don't lose the AC when raging and gain all the benifts.

For a more traditional Kobold, use the Combat Trapsmith.

Kobold ranger with dual-wielded kukris, 'nuff said. Made one for a small campaign that lasted from 1st level to 5th, and let me tell you... I! Loved! It! :D

Well, I went with a kobold named Nerioth. Draconic for Spear Holy. Anyways, I made him a dragonwrought venerable, 2nd level warlock, 3rd level cleric(though if I was to rebuild the spec, I would go 1 warlock, 4 cleric) along with Eldritch Disciple. A kobold flying around without wings, healing people with ranged touch attacks for 5d6 is fairly fun to play, of course, you can chain those. Super Kobold!
