LA+1/+2 template/race for Int-boost [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi,

I'm creating a new character, a gestalt mixing archivist/wizard/factotum/artificer (there're a lot of house rules that don't really matter to tell), and I'm looking for a LA+1 or +2 template and/or race that would boost the Intelligence. Hell, no surprise I'd want to boost that one, I told it in the title.

So, browsing here and there, I found only a handful of races that boost Int, one (or several subraces, rather) of them is elven - and I don't want to play an elf. The other I've already found is the Deep Imaskari (a subrace of humans in the Forgotten Realms).

However, I had first thought about playing an illumian (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/rod_gallery/86317.jpg) or a dwarf (http://www.toddlockwood.com/galleries/concept/03/dwarf_wizard.shtml).

So, a template would be better than a full race, but I'm open for ideas for both. Do you have any ?

Strangely, there does not seem to be any template giving more Int with less than +3 LA. There are a few races, though: drow (LA+2), ghost elf (LA+1), fire hobgoblin (LA+1) and thiefling (+1 LA).

Many elf variants will give you +2 to Int for no LA, though.

I don't want an elf, otherwise I'd taken a grey elf indeed. The DM has ruled out the drows (my first idea for another, earlier PC).

One of the reasons I make a new character is that the previous one (a scoundrelly spellscale) is getting too similar to another player's char - a tiefling rogue. To the point it'd be detrimental to us both.:weep:

I didn't not think about the fire hobgoblin, at first. Sounds like a really good option if no template makes its appearance, the Dexterity and Constitution boosts being handy too. Thanks for this.

Other ideas ?

The Phrenic Template gives +2 INT, +2 WIS & +4 CHA, for LA +2. Plus some power/spell resistance, and some power-like abilities. You would better be a psion than a wizard though.

Voidmind, from MM3. STR +4, DEX+2, CON+2, INT+2, CHA-2 for LA+4. But it involves being controlled by 3 Mindflayers... :yuck:

Half-Nymph, from DR313. DEX+2, INT+2, WIS+2, CHA+4, LA+2.

Take a look in Crystal Keep.

Good catch with phrenic, it seems just what Lawkeeper was looking for.

As for LA over 2, I think few can beat spellwarped.

Sorry, phrenic is out too, we don't use psionics.:weep: :embarrass
Unless I can bargain with my DM to allow me a more "magical" version of it - in which case it'd be great. And useful on top of an illumian. Thanks for point it.

Regarding Crystal Keep, I already went there. I've set voidmind aside, too high an LA (that, and the illithid problem).

To get half-nymph, don't you need to be female ? Otherwise, it's nearly as interesting as an arcanized version of phrenic.

* wondering how a phrenic half-nymph fire hobgoblin would look...:D *

Well first check the monster manual. There is a form of Elf that gets an Int boost besides drow. I can't remember I believes its Gray elves. They have no LA. Depending on what you want beyond the +2 Int you might start looking at other Templates. For a quick list you should search the monster Index for 'templates'. That should give you a fairly full list of all the template and their locations.

I've already played grey elves (and my previous character in the same group was an elven-born spellscale) - and this char' won't be another same old one.

Here are all your choices from WOTC published material for +0 LA races that get a bonus to intelligence:

Gray Elf: -2 Str +2 Dex -2 Con +2 Int, medium, 30 ft., wizard, humanoid (elf), monster manual pg.104

Sun Elf: +2 Int -2 Con, medium, 30 ft., wizard, humanoid (elf), forgotten realms pg.15

Silvanesti: +2 Dex +2 Int -2 Con -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., humanoid (elf), dragonlance campaign setting pg.20

Fire Elf: +2 Dex +2 Int -2 Con -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., wizard, humanoid (elf), unearthed arcana pg.17

Deep Imaskari: +2 Int -2 Dex, medium, 30 ft., spell clutch (su), wizard, humanoid (human), underdark pg.9

Tinker Gnome: +2 Dex +2 Int -2 Str -2 Wis, small, 20 ft., special, dragonlance campaign setting pg.27

Lesser Air Genasi: +2 Dex +2 Int -2 Wis -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., levitate (sp), fighter, humanoid (planetouched), player’s guide to faerun pg.191

Lesser Fire Genasi: +2 Int -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., control flames (sp), fighter, humanoid (planetouched), player’s guide to faerun pg.191

Lesser Tiefling: +2 Int +2 Dex -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., darkness (sp), rogue, humanoid (planetouched), player’s guide to faerun pg.191

Vanara: -2 Str +2 Int +2 Wis, medium, 30 ft. climb 20 ft., spirit shaman, humanoid (vanara), oriental adventures pg.15 – Note: in a 3.5 oriental adventures update found in Dragon magazine, vanara were updated to no longer have any ability score adjustments.

Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold: -4 Str +2 Dex -2 Con +3 Int +3 Wis +3 Cha, small, 30 ft., sorcerer, dragon (kobold, reptilian, dragonblood), monter manual pg.161 and races of the dragon pg. 39

You can also add the Dragonborn of Bahamut pseudo-template without level adjustment to any of the races with a bonus to int (beside the venerable dragonwrought kobold) and gain +2 con -2 dex, which stacks with your original ability adjustments. That may be helpful for a lot of these (especially for races like fire elves and gray elves).

Dragonborn: +2 Con -2 Dex, same as base creature, same as base creature, fighter and the base creatures, humanoid (dragonblood, same as base creature), races of the dragon pg.5

Other than that, you can just increase your age level and suffer the physical ability score penalties.

Seriously, does he have some kind of pager that goes off whenever these types of threads pop up?

Some one probably PMs him or he has some sort of weird light thingy that they point up to the sky and has a symbol for him on it.

hey... I guess this is pointless since you can't use psionics

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/blue.htm

Not a good choice if you want to be uber, but it would be fun. I thought that in the original book it had no level adjustment, I guess there must be errata or something.

There's an anti-psionic template from Secrets of Sarlona that not only gives you bonus INT, but it also lets you use INT for special abilities that normally are based on CHA or WIS. LA+2 IIRC, but if you can change the flavour I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

This seems very useful.:)
But it's a true sadness I have to wait six-seven hours before going home and checking in this book.:weep:

Thanks a lot to all, I think I found what I needed. Either this last one, or an ad-hoc template based on aasimar/air-genasi (to simulate a Djinni-descended) that my DM will probably accept.:)

There's aways the Third Whisker Nezumi from Rokugan Campaign settings. +2 int for -2 str. If I remember right they also have a movement speed of 40ft and no LA.

Or Human, and go for Human Paragon--much the same effect as a +1 la, +2 int race.

Nope, they've always had +1 LA, which many people (myself included) believe is unjustified.
