Ok, I'm sure I sound like an idiot for asking this, but how do LA and ECL relate? Does ECL determine LA and if so, how?

La = Level Adjustment.
This is the modifier some races get for their abilities.

ECL = Equivalent Character Level.
This is the actual level of a character. It is calculated from Class Levels + Racial Hit Dice + Level Adjustment.

Let's say you want to play a bugbear 3rd level druid (hey why not? that would be a hairy druid !).
A bugbear has 3 racial hit dice and a level adjustment +1.
Racial Hit Dice : 3
Class Levels : 3
Level Adjustment : +1
ECL : 7
So your character is estimated at level 7.

There are no stupid questions.
Nobody knows everything and these forums are made for that.

I just felt stupid because I knew I should know it and was getting confused. I think I've got what I was working on sorted out now.

Thanks again.
