Has anyone come accross a large race with a +0 ECL? The best I've found so far are some 3HD Anthropomorphic animals, but i was wondering if I've overlooked a large race with a lower ECL. I am aware of the Half-ogre, but it isnt quite what im looking for.

In theory, you could have a Large (Long) LA +0 race. Large (Long) is like Powerful Build (I think all races with that are at least LA +1) but with all the penalties. The biggest offender is the reach and weapon sizing, but the weapon size is equivalent to a Strength bonus (and, unfortunately, our only PHB race with a Strength bonus that we can use as a guideline sucks).

These rules let you play a Large (long) monstrous humanoid from first level.

The lowest ECL I could find to a large creature (other than half-ogre) is quinametin from DR#317. It has ECL 4 (2HD, +2 LA):

"The Quinametin are towering, comely humanoids of an ancient race thought to be the predecessor of humanity. It is said they have titan blood in their veins."

LA+1 is the closest you're gonna get. Unless you want an exceedingly bland PC with just large size and +2 Str, -2 Dex.

Half minotaur is LA+1, but has some serious balance issues.

If you drop reach you could make a large ECL +0 race. Just need to pick the other racial traits carefully. Stick with only +2 Str and -2 Dex, 3 skill bonuses, and a few minor traits.

A +2 save throw bonus against transmuation effects would be an exmaple of nice minor trait. Figure a large creature would be better suited to resistanting effects that alter the body.

You could just have them be Large, drop the str bonus and give them a flat -2 dex.
