Hey guys. I'm looking for a large race with a +0 LA. I'm not sure one exists, i havent been able to find one, but if there are, i would love to play my next character as something like that.

nope... they have +1 and higher only

reason: large = reach = threatens greater area = POWERFUL

Additionally Large = Bigger weapons = more damage which combos well with a reach improvement.

Half-Ogre has the lowest ECL of all the large sized creatures (LA +2, no racial HD).

If the Campaign you're playing in has a lot of magic, perhaps permanent Enlarge Person might be OK with your DM once your character has attained enough gold & experience.

Ironborn from Book of Iron Might. That's the only one I can think of.

Ironborn from Book of Iron Might. That's the only one I can think of. Wow! Is that REALLY a +0 LA race with Large size? I would be really interested so see how the designer "balanced" out that race. Fitting features that are usually +1 or +2 LA by themselves into +0 LA races is a fun exercise, sure, but not usually a successful one.

No. Neither does the Half Giants.

Is that a WotC book or one from a third party? Often a third party supplement will contain something that breaks most of the basic design rules of 3ed.

Its a 3rd party campaign setting. And WotC products break the rules just as much if not more then any third party.

No. But the variant barbarian class feature Montain Rage makes them Large for the duration of their rage, giving them the additional reach.

So, does anyone have the scoop on how a Large creature could POSSIBLY be balanced without a LA? I'm thinking eliminate reach and severely hit dexterity (for short, stubby arms). Something along those lines, perhaps.

How did the Book of Iron Might do it? (But remember, please, don't post full details, so as not to violate Malhavoc's Press' rights)

You dont want reach? If you dont want reach, why not just powerfull build? Or go "Large, long" instead of "Large, tall"

What about a centaur with no ability mods and a speed of 30. You end up with large size (Bigger weapons, bigger space) darkvision (Monstrous humanoid) and +2NA (No hooves, they suck anyways) Would that be a +0LA ? If not, what if you drop the NA?

Edit: assuming only 1 racial HD

If you dont want reach, why not just powerfull build?Because Powerful Build goes a decent ways toward +1 LA by itself, and it still doesn't count as Large... while my goals are +0 LA and qualifying for things that have a Large prerequisite. Large size without reach is less powerful (ignoring the prerequisite qualifications) than Powerful Build, because you get hit with -1 to AC and attacks.

I'd say a Large(Long) bipedal race could be made +0 LA. Being Large(Long) means no reach, and being bipedal means no quadrupedal boost to carrying capacity. Of course, a Large(Long) biped is a veloceraptor, right? I just CAN'T shake the image and posture out of my mind.

Okay, getting away from the "Long" part... how about a race proportioned somewhat like a human little person, but about 8 feet tall and weighing 900lb? No reach (short arms), Large size, and I'm thinking a Dex penalty wouldn't be out of order. Is this starting to sound balanced?

+2 Str, -4 Dex
Size: Large
Space/Reach: 10ftx10ft, 5ft
+1 Natural Armor

How far do you want to go in simulating a large race?

There is a human-only regional feat called jotunbrud (races of faerun) which lets you be treated as 1 size larger for opposed checks. Monkey grip lets you wield a larger weapon. A human with these 2 feats and weapon focus has the rough equivalent of an inferior version of powerful build...:P

Sounds more like he wants to make a war-hulk or something.
