LAs for unbalanced abilities [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-11-07, 06:32 AM SS is vague on the subject. What exacly is the LA for an unbalanced score? Does Dex +5 have an LA of +1, +2 or +3? What about Dex +10, +15, or +20?

(I'm just using Dex as an example)

07-11-07, 09:23 AM First, just as a minor sidenote, never assign odd ability score adjustments. Second, imbalanced ability scores refers to the overall scores, not just an adjustment to one ability. So if you had dex +4, con -2, str -2, that would (according to savage species) not be an example of imbalanced ability scores. Third, the system in Savage Species is, as you've already started to notice, vague and oversimplified.

If you're building a custom race, your best bet is to use a more updated evaluation system (see my signature for one example), then post the result on the boards for critique.

your supposed to apply a -11 if it is uneven.

P.S. If you want to make a player race our of something that has the following stats.

Str: 13 Dex: 18 Con: 25 Int: 5 Wis: 8 Cha: 10

You would get the following

13-11=+2
18-10=+8
25-11=+14
5-11= -6
8-10=-2
10-10=0

07-13-07, 10:59 AM We can't help you assin an LA based on one ability boost. All of a monster's stats and special abilities go into determining its LA.

XX Racial Traits:
*Str +18
*Speed 30ft
*Humanoid type

And nothing else, it'd still be LA +3 or more. Racial HD may be in order.
