| middlewilliam04-16-07, 10:41 PM | the 24th is a person with a 24th chromosome:evillaugh :plotting: so basically: 5 regen, darkvision, 60ft base land speed, +5 str, +5 int, +5 dex, and+5 con. :w00t: so what do you think? it needs some sort of ECL though because of its power. |
| NerdNumber104-16-07, 10:50 PM | Expain what the ***** this is, please. Or are you just throwing out a general "I'm better than you mortals" template, because I'm getting sick of those. |
| INeedNoSalt04-16-07, 11:11 PM | the 24th is a person with a 24th chromosome:evillaugh :plotting: so basically: 5 regen, darkvision, 60ft base land speed, +5 str, +5 int, +5 dex, and+5 con. :w00t: so what do you think? it needs some sort of ECL though because of its power. Somehow I don't think missing half of your chromosomes would do anything except make you dead. |
| Crimson_Concerto04-16-07, 11:29 PM | the 24th is a person with a 24th chromosome:evillaugh :plotting: so basically: 5 regen, darkvision, 60ft base land speed, +5 str, +5 int, +5 dex, and+5 con. :w00t: so what do you think? it needs some sort of ECL though because of its power. Okay, first of all... what? Second of all, no odd ability adjustments. Make them +4. Lastly... what? |
| Radijs04-17-07, 03:42 AM | Somehow I don't think missing half of your chromosomes would do anything except make you dead. Quite so (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosomes#The_human_chromosomes) I think that these people would spend most their time being dead. Still if you want a template, Make the ability modifiers +4 or +6 instead of +5. This follows the general convention of racial modifiers. A total level adjustment well... Its gonna be pretty painful. With +4 on three abilities. I would estimate that at a +2, maybe a +3 Regeneration 5, I take it you don't mean like the trolls have it? Only vulnerable to acid and fire, take nonlethal damage from the rest? Either way it comes out at about +1/+2 again taking into account the rest of the abilities. Base land speed set to 60 ft. +1 LA Darkvision +0.5 All in all I'd peg it aroun a +5 level adjustment. But wait for others maybe I'm being too critical. |
| Qube04-17-07, 04:35 AM | I highly suggest to make it fast healing 5 (=each turn you heal 5 hp). regeneration is not something to be given to PC's (reason: a troll PC vs almost any creature without fire or acid: the troll PC wins) |
| LoneStranger04-17-07, 02:10 PM | Does the 24th really need an LA? I mean come on, it hasn't picked on the 25th or the 23rd at all, in fact those days of the month get along rather well. |
| middlewilliam04-17-07, 02:38 PM | Somehow I don't think missing half of your chromosomes would do anything except make you dead. your not missing any chromosomes, you gain a 24 chromosome which is an extra set, not missing half the chromosomes that make you who you are. |
| middlewilliam04-17-07, 02:39 PM | I highly suggest to make it fast healing 5 (=each turn you heal 5 hp). regeneration is not something to be given to PC's (reason: a troll PC vs almost any creature without fire or acid: the troll PC wins) fast healing and regeneration are the exact same thing.:evillaugh |
| KieKeN04-17-07, 02:53 PM | fast healing and regeneration are the exact same thing. No, they aren't. From SRD: REGENERATION Creatures with this extraordinary ability recover from wounds quickly and can even regrow or reattach severed body parts. Damage dealt to the creature is treated as nonlethal damage, and the creature automatically cures itself of nonlethal damage at a fixed rate. Certain attack forms, typically fire and acid, deal damage to the creature normally; that sort of damage doesn’t convert to nonlethal damage and so doesn’t go away. The creature’s description includes the details. Creatures with regeneration can regrow lost portions of their bodies and can reattach severed limbs or body parts. Severed parts die if they are not reattached. Regeneration does not restore hit points lost from starvation, thirst, or suffocation. Attack forms that don’t deal hit point damage ignore regeneration. An attack that can cause instant death only threatens the creature with death if it is delivered by weapons that deal it lethal damage. FAST HEALING A creature with fast healing has the extraordinary ability to regain hit points at an exceptional rate. Except for what is noted here, fast healing is like natural healing. At the beginning of each of the creature’s turns, it heals a certain number of hit points (defined in its description). Unlike regeneration, fast healing does not allow a creature to regrow or reattach lost body parts. A creature that has taken both nonlethal and lethal damage heals the nonlethal damage first. Fast healing does not restore hit points lost from starvation, thirst, or suffocation. Fast healing does not increase the number of hit points regained when a creature polymorphs. |
| MightyPotamus04-17-07, 02:54 PM | your not missing any chromosomes, you gain a 24 chromosome which is an extra set, not missing half the chromosomes that make you who you are. An extra chromosome is most commonly called "Down symdrome." Other variants do exist, but most of them do cause either profound retardation or severe malformation. This doesn't sound commensurate with what you've posted here. |
| WHW404-17-07, 02:59 PM | No, they aren't actually. Mechanically, they usually function alike (ie: you get HPs back) but deep down they are very different. You can't use fast healing to regrow body parts. You can regenerate them. Regeneration converts lethal damage into nonlethal damage. Fast healing does not. The regeneration ability usually comes paired with a damage type or types that bypasses the ability altogether (fire and acid for trolls). Fast healing, as far as I know, does not. By your reasoning. DR is the same as fast healing and regeneration. Again, while it effectively gives you more HPs (less damage each round), you dont get really. Read the back of the Monster Manual and all will be clear. Also, you should have been more clear with the whole 24 PAIR to begin with. Most people who have extra chromosomes have disabilities, mental or physical. Google chromosomes before implementing this type of thing. |
| NerdNumber104-17-07, 06:23 PM | your not missing any chromosomes, you gain a 24 chromosome which is an extra set, not missing half the chromosomes that make you who you are. You have 23 pairs! An extra pair causes medical problems. Biology is a lot more complex than you seem to think. |
| ATroubledMarco04-17-07, 06:28 PM | I don't think this has been clarified, but I *think* he's referring to the Doom movie. |
| penchant04-17-07, 07:12 PM | I don't think this has been clarified, but I *think* he's referring to the Doom movie. That, and the clarity of the post seem to indicate you are correct. As far as genetically modified humans, there are plenty of suitable templates that can suffice without creating yet another one. For low power just use a celestial / fiendish template. For high power use the half celestial / half fiend one. Both of these would keep with the flavor of the Doom movie, especially with the good and evil aspects. Damage reduction is commonly described as a fast regeneration as an alternative to being immune to the damage. |
| Squirrelloid04-17-07, 07:29 PM | Also, let the 24th rain, as in from the sky? Huh? I think he meant reign |
| Return of the Flumph04-17-07, 07:29 PM | I'm pretty sure that's what he's getting at. He should have specified "chromosome PAIRS" and "Doom movie," but whatever. That template works, but you shouldn't use it because that movie sucked ass. |
| AMGriffin04-17-07, 07:38 PM | Right now humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, and it's apparently a theory among some scientists that the next step of human evolution will be a being with 24 pairs of chromosomes. I know this because of the Tool song "Forty-six and Two" :P This topic gave me a good chuckle though! |
| Saberus04-17-07, 07:48 PM | The only reason I'm declared a human is because my parents are human. I have anomalous(sp?) abilities, but that doesn't make me the "next step" in evolution. For every advantage I have, I can document at least one disadvantage. I'm more of a really tall Dwarf than a human, at least by D&D standards (which in no way can replace real world standards.) I know I'm not better, just different. |
| Voldar_Mecorthio04-17-07, 07:55 PM | "I'm better than you" templates are overdone. Whoop de do. As for the biology of the situation, it's inacurate and based of a really bad movie. You could just go with a genetically modified person you know, but never the less, the template is still mediocre. Just take Paragon from ELH and reduce all the numbers. |
| Zenogias04-17-07, 08:04 PM | An extra chromosome is most commonly called "Down symdrome." Other variants do exist, but most of them do cause either profound retardation or severe malformation. | middlewilliam04-17-07, 08:54 PM | Also, let the 24th rain, as in from the sky? Huh? I think he meant reign not as in from the sky, but as in the fact that this new race is just beginning. starting. :D |
| skydin04-17-07, 08:55 PM | poo on you guys, i like it, sure its been done before but its simple and it works and theres an explanation for it without a huge amount of fluff( too...much...fluffage on others) and its cool. i.e. dont be mean... |
| middlewilliam04-17-07, 08:57 PM | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty_Six_&_2 Yeah, I'd bump the stat bonuses to +6 each and put it at +3 LA. whats LA again?   |
| penchant04-17-07, 10:59 PM | DR cannot be considdered regeneration because you don't take the damage doesn't mean gain the damage back on your turn plus extra the next turn. In the explanation of damage reduction in the Monstrous Manual 3.5 it states in part, "A creature with this special quality ignores damage from most weapons and natural attacks. Wounds heal immedaitely, or the weapon bounces off harmlessly..." This flavor text can be found in a number of references and sources showing alternate special effects for the simple stat of DR. When I say, "Damage reduction is commonly described as a fast regeneration as an alternative to being immune to the damage," I mean exactly that and not, "DR is Regeneration (Su)." |

| The White Sorcerer04-18-07, 03:44 AM | not as in from the sky, but as in the fact that this new race is just beginning. starting. :D What does that have to do with rain? |
| Finfreeze04-18-07, 04:55 AM | Pump the bonuses up to +6, and it'll probably make an LA +3 template. As for the flavor, I assume the "24 chromosomes" excuse is similar to the "comic book radiation" excuse. After all, chimps and tobacco plants have more chromosomes than humans do. |
| Warforged Goblin04-18-07, 07:07 AM | Ow... just... just ow. It's posts like this that make me want to destroy cities... |
| YabaTheWhat04-18-07, 09:44 AM | Does the 24th really need an LA? I mean come on, it hasn't picked on the 25th or the 23rd at all, in fact those days of the month get along rather well. But it's raining. :( |
| middlewilliam04-21-07, 12:19 PM | LA= Level adjustment. Click the link in my sig for detailed info. thanks, so... LA = ECL ECL = effective character level and i explained what the "Rain" part of my header is earlier. |
| Scribbler04-21-07, 12:23 PM | No. ECL=LA+HD (both racial and class levels) ECL = effective character level That second part is right. |
| AMGriffin04-21-07, 12:25 PM | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty_Six_&_2 The intentions you had when posting this seem highly ambiguous. |
| WHW404-21-07, 12:25 PM | Ok, well when something rains, it falls from the sky or moves from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. When something reigns, it is in a position of authority or rules over something. You pick which one you mean, dude. Sorry, but I guess someone had to eventually tell you instead of just poke fun. |
| Einvaldurinn_mikli04-21-07, 12:26 PM | Say, middlewilliam, you wouldn't happen to be in middle school would you? |
| middlewilliam04-21-07, 12:42 PM | Ok, well when something rains, it falls from the sky or moves from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. Sorry, but I guess someone had to eventually tell you instead of just poke fun. the 24th is a race that hates being in the spotlight so they are always in the backround so they won't rule over anyone. and i explained rain earlier so i'm stiking with it. and no i'm not in middle school:) |
| middlewilliam04-21-07, 01:10 PM | the 24th is a race that hates being in the spotlight so they are always in the backround so they won't rule over anyone. and i explained rain earlier so i'm stiking with it. and no i'm not in middle school:) higher grade |

| Kuronue04-21-07, 03:31 PM | and i explained rain earlier so i'm stiking with it. No, you didn't, because no meaning of the word "rain" has anything to do with "just beginning" or "just starting" rain /reɪn/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[reyn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun 1. water that is condensed from the aqueous vapor in the atmosphere and falls to earth in drops more than 1/50 in. (0.5 mm) in diameter. Compare drizzle (def. 6). 2. a rainfall, rainstorm, or shower: We had a light rain this afternoon. 3. rains, the rainy season; seasonal rainfall, as in India. 4. weather marked by steady or frequent rainfall: We had rain most of last summer. 5. a heavy and continuous descent or inflicting of anything: a rain of blows; a rain of vituperation. –verb (used without object) 6. (of rain) to fall (usually used impersonally with it as subject): It rained all night. 7. to fall like rain: Tears rained from their eyes. 8. to send down rain: The lightning flashed and the sky rained on us in torrents. –verb (used with object) 9. to send down in great quantities, as small pieces or objects: People on rooftops rained confetti on the parade. 10. to offer, bestow, or give in great quantity: to rain favors upon a person. 11. to deal, hurl, fire, etc., repeatedly: to rain blows on someone's head. —Verb phrase 12. rain out, to cause, by raining, the cancellation or postponement of a sports event, performance, or the like: The double-header was rained out yesterday. —Idiom 13. rain cats and dogs, Informal. to rain very heavily or steadily: We canceled our picnic because it rained cats and dogs. |
| sigma99904-22-07, 02:35 AM | Must be a trolling thread.. seems to have worked pretty well but here's my try... A decent LA+5, no less. Regeneration is prevented by 2 common elements/materials, such as any 2 of Silver, Iron, Wood, Fire, Cold, Electric, Acid, Sonic. |
| Kresalak04-22-07, 02:56 AM | Now that we are on the topic, which grade would that be? I think he's in the "special" grade. Maybe he has that 24th chromosome. |
| turalisj04-22-07, 05:03 AM | Edited so I don't get banned.... >.> |
| Fatalis_90204-22-07, 07:17 AM | The entire idea here is silly. Having an extra pair of chromosomes that your body isn't prepared for tends to do one of two things. It will either a) cause severe mental retardation or other physical deformities, Down Syndrome is an example, or b) depending on the type of extra chromosome, it might kill you. And you can only recieve chromosomes that your parents had, anyway. This race/template wouldn't work from a genetic level up through fruition. |
| The White Sorcerer04-22-07, 01:25 PM | and i explained rain earlier so i'm stiking with it. Dude, you can't just invent new meanings for words and expect people to understand what you're trying to say. |
| middlewilliam04-24-07, 02:51 PM | No, you didn't, because no meaning of the word "rain" has anything to do with "just beginning" or "just starting" i'm using it as a synonym. ***** |
| middlewilliam04-24-07, 02:52 PM | Now that we are on the topic, which grade would that be? 11th. |
| middlewilliam04-24-07, 02:55 PM | i'm changing the abilities: regeneration 10 dex +6. thats it |
| YabaTheWhat04-24-07, 03:53 PM | i'm changing the abilities: regeneration 10 dex +6. thats it So, presumably, this supercedes the content of your first post. Taking that as an assumption: Regeneration 10 against all damage types means they cannot be killed, under any circumstances, via hitpoint loss. The only way to kill them would be instant-kill spells, reducing their constitution to zero, or reducing them to level zero (via level drain). All physical damage becomes subdual damage, which is not lethal. Is this what you wanted? If not, then change it from Regeneration to Fast Healing, or give one or more bypass methods for regeneration (i.e. damage types that deal normal damage). Side questions: What country are you from? Is English your first language? Do you have difficulty reading large blocks of text due to vision problems? Have you learned how to solve the following equation for y? {xy + 3yy - 4x = 72 + x} |
| turalisj04-24-07, 05:48 PM | You have a double y, making it impossible to solve :P But seriously, try this for 24th chromsome: -4 intelligence, -2 wisdom, -2 charisma -2 to spot, listen, and concentration checks Uses spells and powers as if they were 2 levels lower, can never learn or use 8th level or higher spells or powers. Now you have your 24th chromsome. |
| sigma99904-24-07, 06:39 PM | Do you have difficulty reading large blocks of text due to vision problems? Have you learned how to solve the following equation for y? {xy + 3yy - 4x = 72 + x} Well, that's no reasonable test: 1: My own eyes can't. They blur out and spasm sometimes from over-reading. Maybe it's my one near-sighted eye, the left one, compensating, and I need a contact lense, but true for me that I can't read large paragraphs for too long. 2: I did those problems in high school about 8 years ago. Then I opted to not take Calculus in my last year since I nearly failed Trigonometry TWICE, and that was with 2 different tutors and my father making sure my 'work was correct' pretty much every time I told him I have homework. Needless to say, those long nights of redundant, confusing math ate a good 6-8 hours any night I did my math homework, and I learned that math = suffering and waste of time. Geometry and Algebra are different, tho. So, here I am, 24, 5 years of college, and still math-avoidant. Looking at that equation, my guess is that.... it will take me hours to solve it, so I won't bother. Turalisj seems to have it down, but that's just a guess, as I really have no clue as to whether he's right or not. It's by no means a measure of IQ or success. I am quite frankly retarded when it comes to complex equations, as my visual and math/organizational IQ is below average. However my average IQ is around 140, mostly from verbal, fact-recollection, and spatial. Yes, I am autistic too. Different intelligences, Yaba. Consider that. This guy middlewilliam could be smart in some way but this doesn't seem to be his forte, nor the medium to express that intelligence. Also, I assume he's young, and leave it at that. Use Fast Healing 10, man. And please give us a better explanation of what you mean by '24' and the connection with 'rain'? Do you mean 'reign'? |
| YabaTheWhat04-24-07, 07:57 PM | Well, that's no reasonable test It isn't supposed to be a test. I didn't ask him (or you) to actually solve the problem. What I'm trying to do is determine why he appears to have {a} poor or non-existent grasp of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, {b} a penchant for using far too many line breaks, {c} gaping holes in his grasp of the rules he is trying to use, and {d} a tendency to defend the aforementioned failings as intentional, rather than accepting and/or correcting them. Use Fast Healing 10, man. And please give us a better explanation of what you mean by '24' and the connection with 'rain'? Do you mean 'reign'? He said he means "rain", not "reign", and justified it by using a completely fictitious definition for his word of choice. not as in from the sky, but as in the fact that this new race is just beginning. starting. :Dthe 24th is a race that hates being in the spotlight so they are always in the backround so they won't rule over anyone. and i explained rain earlier so i'm stiking with it. and no i'm not in middle school:) |
| YabaTheWhat04-24-07, 08:07 PM | You have a double y, making it impossible to solve :P Not really. It will, however, require you to make one side of the formula into the form (y+n)(y+n)=(otherstuff). The question is whether middlewilliam ever learned how to solve it (not even whether or not he can solve it). In some countries, the grades start at 12 and count down, as opposed to counting up like they do in the United States. |

| obrysii04-25-07, 08:30 AM | *smacks Narukagami over the head with a school text book* Don't let the stupidity of a few reflect on the intelligence of others. No, I have to say that the U.S. school system sucks. They don't even TOUCH philosophy, for one ... and most students have barely any grasp on the English language. You can typically tell high school students who are online: lack of capitalization (consistently), spelling "you" as "u", "are" as "r" and so on and so forth. So at this point, this race has: *Dex +6 *Regeneration [Fast Healing?] 10 *60ft move speed *Something to do with rain |
| YabaTheWhat04-25-07, 08:39 AM | So at this point, this race has: *Something to do with rain At the moment, it's falling flat on its face, in large quantities. Does that count? |
| obrysii04-25-07, 09:32 AM | At the moment, it's falling flat on its face, in large quantities. Does that count? Maybe. He could have used it a bit more poetically. "The rain falls upon the new people, Embracing their future, Solidifying their present, And wiping their past: The rain falls, and brings new life To the new people" Or some such nonsense. |

| Scribbler04-25-07, 04:12 PM | Regen 10 can still be killed by beating it unconscious w/ the subdual damage, then a Coup-de-Grace. A coup-de-grace has to be delivered with lethal damage, so if nothing overcomes their regeneration that still doesn't work. |

Hmm, that's just how I read the entry in the back of the MM, no mention on having to bypass the 'nonlethal' aspect. Failing a coup-de-grace, you could just spend a few minutes pounding away at the unconscious body and guarantee that it won't come to for a few decades... |
| RequiemOfReason04-25-07, 04:33 PM | Come to think of it, there are some viable human quadrasomies (individuals with four copies of a chromosome.) XXXX Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXXX_syndrome) Still, it certainly doesn't grant any superpowers. Anyone looking for a simple "next stage of evolution" template would probably have a better time just taking a few levels of Paragon. Or the Feral Template. I think that gives fast healing, and a strength bonus. Along with some natural attacks, and an INT penalty. I can't recall what else. And I happen to be a 17 year old highschooler. | SpoonyBard04-25-07, 06:08 PM | The only reason I'm declared a human is because my parents are human. But dwarves ARE the next step in evolution! They're mechanically superior to humans! I want +2 con! |

(:headexplo some jerk stole my PS2 from my dorm today.:headexplo) Actually, that would be the +2 racial bonus to saves vs poison. Still, humans are evolutionarily superior to every other race in D&D. They mature the fastest, which means they spread the fastest. They have no set features, so they're the most adaptable. And beyond that, they're also economically superior, because human society produces more heroes in a smaller amount of time. The only races that can compete with humans are goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears, and those are actually all variations on one species. |
| obrysii04-25-07, 11:30 PM | Actually, that would be the +2 racial bonus to saves vs poison. Alcohol is a poison. Technically, since it's a Fort save, they end up having a +3 bonus vs. alcohol. |
| Saberus04-26-07, 12:30 AM | Point being, it's harder to get drunk. Life rarely lets you voluntarily fail a save. |

There is no "next step"; evolution is a constant process that sometimes experiences "jumps" where it goes really fast for a short period of time (usually a few thousand years). Beyond that, Autism and Down's Syndrome are not beneficial mutations; left to their own devices, people with bad cases of this disorders would be unable to care for themselves. |

I believe its impossible for us as a race to judge what is benificial on a biological level. We're to far removed from nature and our natural state to say that one mutation is benificial or harmfull. I would agree that these conditions do not lend themselves modern society. And also, I didn't say that I believed that autism or downs syndrome was an evolution. I just said some people believe, that as such conditions become more common their could be a day where everyone had autism, and it might be better fitted for whatever our world is like then. Not my opinions, but I wasn't up on the "LOL DOWN'S SYNDROME" posts that were happening, so I decided to post an alternative. |

Please don’t compare Autism and Down’s Syndrome. Having been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (the ‘mildest’ part of the autistic spectrum) myself, I can assure you that there are both positive and negative aspects. Wiki’s list of AS characteristics: Narrow interests or preoccupation with a subject to the exclusion of other activities (Not necessarily a bad thing. The world needs specialists) Repetitive behaviors or rituals (Again, not bad, just another way of coping with the world) Peculiarities in speech and language (Only problematic if people don’t understand you. More of a difference than a difficulty.) Extensive logical/technical patterns of thought (Now what’s bad about that?) Socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior and interpersonal interaction (Can be a problem, granted. But it has a lot to do with the standards for appropriate behavior.) Problems with nonverbal communication (I have always found it depressing how NTs (stands for “neurotypical”, an aspie word for non-autist people) insist on communicating via ‘signals’ instead of just saying what they mean. This gives guys the right to insist that “I don’t want to have sex with you” really means: “I want to have sex with you” :rolleye2: , because you looked too friendly while saying it, and calling you a cold ***** if you don’t look friendly enough  Why is it a problem that about 1% of the population (officially) suck at reading body-language, and not a problem that almost 50% of the population fails at communicating VERBALLY?) Clumsy and uncoordinated motor movements (No excuse for that, I’m afraid :D ) There’s a lot more to autism (especially the ‘higher functioning’ kind) than most people think. Often, the problems with autism (again, especially the ‘higher functioning’ kind) stems as much from misunderstandings (as the result of a different thought process), as from actual problems. Some people, like the aforementioned Temple Grandin, has learned to cope with her difficulties (which is hard, I can tell you, as you have no one to learn from), and turned her autistic traits into an advantage. I’m not talking about some ‘next step in evolution’-crap. Just don’t assume people like me are flawed for being who we are. Btw, try asking about roleplayers and computer geeks. If diagnosed correctly (many aspies (people with AS) can go through life without knowing) you’ll be surprised at the amount of autistists, semi-autists and people with autistic traits that frequent these environments (and these boards) ;) |

I highly agree with what your saying. I'm glad someone with more expertise on this topic has joined. I hadn't become familiar with Grandin until her recent lecture at my college, but it has changed my views on austism and Asperger's. I also feel the whole "next step in evolution" is thing is kind of weird, but mostly because of the conotation of that phrase. Most people assume that evolution is a good thing, and alot of people assume austism and other syndromes are bad things. Their is also the conotation of "next step" it seems to imply that we're climbing some staircase into a perfect form. I don't necessarly see any reason for that to be true. The way I think about it is that if the entire population were to have one of these conditions, and it became a permanent hereditary thing, then that would be an evolution. Some studies have shown that certain conditions are increasing in frequency. Thus why some believe any given condition might be "the next step in evolution". |
| YabaTheWhat04-26-07, 09:21 PM | Personally I figure that autism might prove to be an evolutionary advancement. Science keeps advancing, to the point where the (current) average person cannot possibly grasp it, and even the most skilled specialist needs to spend more time learning his or her craft than advancing it. An autistic person has the potential to learn much more specialized material than most "normal" people, with greater proficiency and in less time. Eventually, scientific knowledge may reach a point where only an autistic specialist can produce further advancement. However, autistic persons are also likely to lack creativity, in the sense of the expression, "thinking outside the box." This means that an autistic person would need to work with a more creative person in order to resolve contradictions that do not fit the existing frameworks. An autistic specialist would also need the aid of others to maintain his or her health, finances, and other responsibilities unrelated to his or her specialty. Down's syndrome has, to the best of my knowledge, no practical benefits. It is not an evolutionary step, merely a recurring glitch, which ultimately renders its bearers unable to contribute to society (even in the capacity of the aforementioned caretaker for an autistic scientist). But I digress. |
| Kresalak04-26-07, 09:31 PM | That's not how evolution works. Evolution is a random process that only advances a species if the mutant strains survive better than the normal strain (or if they're geographically isolated). |
| saidin011104-27-07, 02:27 AM | um...wow, I'm stunned, he really doesn't understand evolution all that much, of course that's no big suprise, as most students who don't go through an accelerated or advanced placement course of study simply don't get a decent amount of exposure to the real details Evolution can occur by the function of the current genes changing/expanding, perhaps through the incorporation of various bits of "junk" DNA, or maybe it isn't so much the junk it appears to be. Perhaps bits of it are referenced by various genes to determine what, within their range of possible effects, to produce and when. In such a case, a change to the "junk" could even be an evolutionary step, as much as I hate to use step in this context, my vocabulary is failing me right now. It would be much more likely for a new gene to develop on an existing chromosome than for an entirely new chromosome to become a common and useful trait. Even back when the X-Men comics started out, they seemed to grasp the concept better than the OP, the "X-factor" is a gene, not a chromosome. This gene manifests as a new portion of the mind that can produce various powers depending on the gene's configuration. Various optimal configurations of the chemical components of said gene could include those of Jean Grey, Scarlet Witch (IIRC her powers), Apocalypse, etc. While such a powerful single gene is not likely to exist, a new chromosome appearing in a fairly stable and well adjusted species is only that much more unlikely. |
| YabaTheWhat04-27-07, 06:55 AM | That's not how evolution works. Evolution is a random process that only advances a species if the mutant strains survive better than the normal strain (or if they're geographically isolated). Just in case you're talking to me (which you're probably not, but oh well): Autistic persons could survive better than, or parallel to, current standard humans, in a society where academic specialization functions as a survival trait. The main thing holding back this process is the concept that an autistic person's inept social skills prevent them from reproducing. However, with the latest statistic (if it's accurate; I don't know where I received it) saying that one out of every 110 newborn children shows signs of autism, that may change. While full-blown socially crippling autism may not become prominent, it seems that minor autism may integrate itself permanently into the genetic pool. Persons with Down's Syndrome cannot survive as a species. While we as a society do not allow them to die on their own, we also take measures to prevent them from reproducing. These measures are generally taken for their own safety, because they are not capable of caring for offspring, and cannot earn a sufficient income (in the environment of modern society) to support even themselves, let alone families. |

It should be noted that statistic is somewhat skewed due to a recent reclassification of many minor mental disabilities now being called autism. |

But I digress. Oh, you do digress. Yaba you are dead wrong and I do my best to remember that you, like Kresalak, are merely uneducated in the matter and not simply being opinionated, insulting, and crude. I, like Erato, am autistic. I don't "have autism", I AM autism. And while it may have select situational advantages and disadvantages, until an change in genome through complete removal from so-called "normal" human bloodlines (read: non-autistic) or somehow a speciation of non-autistics and autistics occurs, it's not evolution. We're still human, all of us, as long as any human may potentially produce young with any other human as nature allows. Beyond that, Autism and Down's Syndrome are not beneficial mutations; left to their own devices, people with bad cases of this disorders would be unable to care for themselves. Kresalak.... :raincloud I'll have to debate exactly what opinion this is, forming in my mind, of you. Can't quite put it into words... maybe something along the lines of.. Disappointment? Read more and don't generalize. That's my advice. And even worse.. The main thing holding back this process is the concept that an autistic person's inept social skills prevent them from reproducing. Really? Wow. OK... From my own experience I can tell you that my current girlfriend, of a year-and-half now, is hopefully the last of at least 15-20 girls in the last 7-8 years. I've lost count, actually. And that's not even counting 'stands'. I'm not proud of that, but there it is; my history, long and full of mistakes and make-ups, drama and passion. And I'm a halftard. What a zinger, huh? Here's some information: Asperger's Syndrome and 'mild autistics' can and do and do well to get girls/boys if not EASILY, given our generally non-confrontational, intellectual, easygoing yet focused natures. Sure there's young low-functioning dependant poster-children for autism here and there and they might not have significant others but look at the BIGGER PICTURE!!! While full-blown socially crippling autism may not become prominent, it seems that minor autism may integrate itself permanently into the genetic pool. You have no idea. While we as a society do not allow them to die on their own, we also take measures to prevent them from reproducing. We? We who? You just might have a vendetta, and so far I'm not like'n it. At all. These measures are generally taken for their own safety, because they are not capable of caring for offspring, and cannot earn a sufficient income (in the environment of modern society) to support even themselves, let alone families. ... Sadly, I've lost respect for some here today. The ability to write good D&D material is unfortunately not guaranteed proportionate to the ability to educate oneself. |
| Saberus04-27-07, 08:23 PM | As far as autism, or Asperger's for that matter, I've never been diagnosed w/ either. Though I possess many of those traits listed, I feel I do not have Asperger's. I'm just a nerd. I have a great deal of book smarts, and a decent helping of common sense. But my interests (and my allergies) left me staying indoors most of the time. I really didn't get the time I needed to develop athletically or socially. does anyone else seem to have noticed that our OP seems to have run off? I think this template is beyond broken. |
| Erato04-27-07, 08:38 PM | ... Sadly, I've lost respect for some here today. The ability to write good D&D material is unfortunately not guaranteed proportionate to the ability to educate oneself. Whoa! Easy there. I don’t quite understand all the English you’re speaking/writing (halftard? :thinks: ), but you seem to overreact. A lot. Where did Yabba insinuate that autists aren’t human? Humans can evolve (for good or ill) and still be human. Evolution is just a word a lot of people happen to use, to describe a change in the human gene pool. If people with autistic traits are more successful (in having offspring), then more and more people will be born with autistic traits (since it’s somewhat inherited), and the human species will evolve. (I don’t think this is the case though). And about Kresalak, he usually tries to turn every subject into a conversation about tentacle rape, and most of my conversations with him have ended with him asking for my picture. You really shouldn’t get upset. Just correct him; he’s usually a good sport about these things ;) And please get of your high horse – “our generally non-confrontational, intellectual, easygoing yet focused natures” Just tell people that there are different kinds of autists – in fact, one of the experts on the topic in my country, have stated that there are often greater individual differences between aspies than between NTs. And don’t neglect to mention that some of these types are ANNOYING  If you think being an aspie on a neurotypical forum is hard, and warrants outbursts like this, then try being female in a 90% male forum. The amounts of misconceptions, mockery, smug superiority, and hostility directed at you can sometimes be overwhelming. You just have to show greater self-control and be more overbearing than the people you're criticising. Focussing on trifles will only get you labelled as a hysteric :) |
| Erato04-27-07, 08:42 PM | To get back on topic (despite being both interesting and relevant, due to the amount of autists/semi-autists in the gaming environment, I fear this conversation will end up getting the thread closed): So, you want a fact and agile race. What’s that got to do with having a 24th pair of chromosomes (which is what I assume you meant)? |
| sigma99904-27-07, 09:13 PM | Erato: *sigh* So true. You got me sold. I'll admit, right now (later) I don't feel the same as I did upon reading this "discussion", but I'm not looking back. Yeah, Kresalac is a bit unusual but the opinion went too far IMHO. Hysteric? That's new. I don't worry about that. Maybe 'hasty' or 'hypocrite' but since emotion is one of my stunted traits that's to be expected. Can't take care of myself and all, you know. OK, I did over-react a bit, here and now, but it is reactionary. Not all the time, not everywhere, but on this topic I am offended. 'Halftard' is something I heard as a kid and refined later, pretty much means a person is 'retarded' but still 'functional'. High-functioning or whatever, with... quirks. Joke intended, sometimes it doesn't translate. From autistics I've met, I have yet to find someone that was malicious or argumentive. Usually they (more anti-social 'low-functioning' than us) tend to want to be left alone, do their own thing/specialty. Hence, easygoing (as long as they have their favorite at hand) and focused (on a select number of topics/interests). However if an autistic is overstimulated, harassed, cornered and so on, they will usually be unable to express the proper emotion/social signal that implies "leave me alone". If stressed frequently enough, they will appear to be chronically aggressive, but such I have never, ever seen. It's always reactionary. If aggressive, it's a 'co-morbid' disorder, perhaps undiagnosed schizophrenia or harmful bipolar/depression. I won't edit that post any more though; when it comes to shame, guilt, and regret, it's best to stand up and shout I DID IT! That's my reaction, it will stay unless a Wiz-Mod instructs me to correct it. I see no profanity, slandering of racial or religious origins, or harassment on my part, and as such nothing wrong. But I vote for a thread close. This is going no-where. |

| middlewilliam04-28-07, 12:19 PM | No, I have to say that the U.S. school system sucks. They don't even TOUCH philosophy, for one ... and most students have barely any grasp on the English language. You can typically tell high school students who are online: lack of capitalization (consistently), spelling "you" as "u", "are" as "r" and so on and so forth. So at this point, this race has: *Dex +6 *Regeneration [Fast Healing?] 10 *60ft move speed *Something to do with rain "*Something to do with rain"! I'm using it as a metaphor so you can back off the rain-reign stuff!!! And the "you" as "u", "are" as "r" stuff is what we use for texting because its easier then spelling the entire word on those itty bitty # pads. |
| middlewilliam04-28-07, 12:28 PM | Humans have 46 chromosomes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Having only 24 wouldn't make you special, just dead. Also, dude, RAIN? Why would cadavers with 24 chromosomes fall from the sky? (NOTE: I haven't actually read the thread, nor do I intend to. Please try and be at least biologically literate before trying to discuss known scientific fact. I'm sorry if that sounds blunt or mean, but as an unoffficial member of Science Geeks United, I needed to say it. I bet dozens of other people did too, I just haven't read their posts.) shut the **** up about the rain crap i've alriady explained it like 5 or 6 times alraidy. and don't correct my spelling i know i've made acouple of mistakes already. besides its 24 pairs of cromosomes, not 24 chromosomes. 24 pairs makes for 48 chromosomes *****. so get better in your grammar and mathematics. |
| turalisj04-28-07, 12:29 PM | Middlewiliam, shut up. I can't believe that you are still on about that. Actualy, I can. Instead of simply typing reign, which means to rule over, you typed rain, which is the falling of liquid precipitation. Please tell me where the similarity between those two are. I don't want to hear this BS on you using them as a metaphor. Backup your claim. You have no right in telling ANYONE to get better gramticly and mathmaticly. Your spelling is atrocious. I find it hard to resist stabbing my eyes out just looking at that CRAP you call typing. |
| middlewilliam04-28-07, 12:38 PM | um...wow, I'm stunned, he really doesn't understand evolution all that much, of course that's no big suprise, as most students who don't go through an accelerated or advanced placement course of study simply don't get a decent amount of exposure to the real details Evolution can occur by the function of the current genes changing/expanding, perhaps through the incorporation of various bits of "junk" DNA, or maybe it isn't so much the junk it appears to be. While such a powerful single gene is not likely to exist, a new chromosome appearing in a fairly stable and well adjusted species is only that much more unlikely. so, according to you would you rather this be a new gene introduced to a species or should it stay as a chromosome? |
| obrysii04-28-07, 12:40 PM | And the "you" as "u", "are" as "r" stuff is what we use for texting because its easier then spelling the entire word on those itty bitty # pads. But this ISN'T TEXTING! This is a message board; there is no rush to type. You have plenty of time to spell out what you are attempting to say. Use Google's word document for spelling and grammar if you don't have Word or Works. |
| Kresalak04-28-07, 12:44 PM | if its not a synonym? then its a metaphor. No, it's not. A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another; rain and reign are homonyms, which means they sound the same but have different meanings. What you're doing is being an idiot. |
| The White Sorcerer04-28-07, 12:47 PM | Instead of simply typing reign, which means to rule over, you typed rain, which is the falling of liquid precipitation. Please tell me where the similarity between those two are. The OP has stated, repeatedly, that he didn't mean "reign" in any way. if its not a synonym? then its a metaphor. It's a very bad metaphor, and needs some serious explaining. It's like using "sandwich" as a metaphor for "washing dishes." |
| turalisj04-28-07, 12:51 PM | The OP has stated, repeatedly, that he didn't mean "reign" in any way. Then what in the name of all that is intelligent is he talking about? |
| Einvaldurinn_mikli04-28-07, 12:54 PM | Then what in the name of all that is intelligent is he talking about? That's where your error is. |
| middlewilliam04-28-07, 12:54 PM | Erato: *sigh* So true. This is going no-where. if your right about the fact that autist can't express the leave me alone when backed into a corner then by this deffinition (including the "they appear to be chronically aggressive" part) then i might have autism even though i've never benn tested for it. |

| middlewilliam04-28-07, 12:59 PM | i need to find some way to get this thread closed it is way to off topic and creating a race with you critics arounds is really hard. |
| CryoSilver04-28-07, 01:21 PM | i need to find some way to get this thread closed it is way to off topic and creating a race with you critics arounds is really hard. 1: Send a PM to a Wizo and ask them to close it. 2: The point of a message board is to get criticism (though in most cases, said criticism is constructive; less so in this case). 3: If you want help creating anything on this board, you need proper spelling and mostly proper grammar, or you'll get nothing but flak for the poor quality of your grasp of the English language. That's the way the cookie crumbles. |
| Saberus04-28-07, 04:03 PM | i need to find some way to get this thread closed it is way to off topic and creating a race with you critics arounds is really hard. You opened this can of worms, Buck-o. Next time try to create a backstory that backs it up with reason and logic. A little leeway is acceptable and incouraged in a magic filled world like D&D, but you can't just invent a new meaning for a word, or start getting PO'ed when someone makes a scathing remark. Acting childish towards the less constructive comments doesn't help your case, either. If you read back through the thread, some people actually put helpful comments in. I wasn't one of them, but after you started acting like a fool, the helpful comments stopped dead. You shot yourself in the foot by sticking said foot in your mouth. CryoSilver has given you the correct and easiest method to close this thread, but know that your future submittions(sp?) will be haunted by this one's ill reception. You will have an uphill battle from now on. Honestly, you act like the kid who skips class to go smoke weed. Those people end up having the hardest time trying to sound intelligent, even if they are. If that is you, seek help, you'll thank yourself in the future. I wasn't a drug user, but I didn't take school seriously, so now I'm a seething cesspool of wasted talent. Don't become like me, you still have a chance. I use too many metaphors and hyperboles. |

It's possible. In Maryland you can declare yourself "learning impaired" without any shrinks, and a simple test administered by the government such as through the DORS program can confirm this. Then you get a sponsor to direct and vouch for you in acquiring student aid and special lessons or coping sessions for however long you would need if you qualify as "disabled" enough by government standards. I haven't gone through this, having only known of the possibility for a matter of months, and only know of it from my girlfriend's mother (student advisor, and all..) but godamn I sure wish I had it through my entire public education. Would have saved a lot of sweat/blood, academic Sisyphusian struggles, and tears. One regret is that I lost a lot of recess in gradeschool for not finishing tests on time. A LOT. But managing without any 'special lessons' or medication and even acquiring a college decree is my pride, even if I barely made it this far, since I brought myself up from a borderline low-functioning comulsive, autistic childhood to a mildly quirky adult I am today. Not everyone can do the same but I believe it's possible at least for some. Hope you can find a similar program wherever you are, MW, good luck. And I see the thread's not closed yet. hmmmm  |

I did that to fit in one more metaphor, and tell the OP that as bad as he's done here, I believe in second chances. Whether he uses that chance wisely or not is up to him. I doubt he has that wisdom, however. |
