| Merryadocc04-13-07, 08:43 PM | I once opened a link from these forums, that opened a level adjustment calculator. I am searching for it and would like to know if it still exists, and if I could get a link to it. Thanks for your time, Merryadocc :) |
| Merryadocc04-13-07, 08:54 PM | I found this one almost 2 minutes after I posted this thread. http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/shadows/Handbook/ECLcalc.html Are there anymore? |
| EternalWizard04-18-07, 05:34 PM | i love that link :D |
| YabaTheWhat04-19-07, 08:17 AM | i love that link :D That's bad for your health. It isn't very healthy for your campaign either. Try setting the Undead type and raising charisma to 26 (+16 bonus). The total is 0.8 (all from charisma; changing the type does nothing), which it says to round down. It thinks size Tiny is worth 1.7 by itself, while size Large (including reach?) is worth 0.3 by itself. In short, this calculator is busted. |

Not that I don't agree with you, but I think the Undead type in this calculator doesn't include any of its features, in fact I don't know why the heck "type" is even selectable, it doesn't seem to do anything. Most of those seem... well, only partially set up, I would prefer it to put in all the features, Large is only 0.3, but the 10ft reach makes it 0.8. I think it'd be easier, for example, to just go through comparison than to figure out exactly which of the Undead traits have equivalents in the powers and weaknesses, since it doesn't outright tell you what everything is worth, just some of it, so you're back to comparison anyway- I've gotten off track and lost where I was going, but yeah, Large size is just large without reach or anything else, Undead, Outsider, Plant, they're all just names for who knows what reason, still, I wouldn't it trust it on its own. Edit: Now that I really look at it, it specifically mentions undead under one of the "major" powers "Immunities to more than 1 energy type (includes Undead and Constructs)." Though the undead type doesn't grant immunities to energy types, I wonder how much this is supposed to include, fort save incurring effects? Does it include Criticals? Mind affecting? It doesn't seem like it would be too tough to just have a base bonus for everything the type gives, since there are very rarely exceptions (and even those could be countered with "weaknesses" and require less, this is like naming everyone you're not related to when someone asks you about your family... ok that's a bit much). (come to think of it- Type might decide how much they're getting for those HD) Double Edit: Lets keep looking here, humorously enough, Half-Ogre (from RoD, Large Giant) is exactly ECL 2, in keeping with its LA +2, lets try something more complicated- a Hezrou, ECL 19 normally... and I got ECL 20.4, not far off (and I'd rather it be higher, honestly) though there isn't anything particularly "Stench" worthy, I did my best... I really want to find something it considers way the hell off the scale- how about Thri-Keen normally ECL 4... I got ECL 4.5, ok, I don't know where I was going with that one, I would really like to test this quite a bit, I suppose the idea is to get ECL for things that don't normally show ECL, even though that means we have no way of proving it. Ok, let me find something harder... |
| ff6shadow04-19-07, 11:40 AM | +99 Int for a LA of 4. Sign me up. Even with the LA, a Wizard 16 is still gonna massacre people. Clearly that link is garbage. |
| adimeadozen04-19-07, 11:59 AM | Ok, an Astral Deva is ECL 20, normally, lets first see what one gives us: Hmm, anywhere from 21.8 to 22.6, the Stun ability is hard to place especially since it's written like it only works with their mace. Still, lets see what adding the Epic template Psuedonatural does to that... unless I'm missing something, that makes it anywhere from 36 to 38, 36 if you take the low end of both Deva and Psuedo, and 38 if you take the higher deva, a 14-15 point increase, the Epic Level Handbook, not exactly an old standby for balance and equality, shows the Template as being +13 (effectively), maybe I did something wrong. |

Yeah, it's pretty obvious it doesn't scale ability score increases well, in fact, it probably doesn't handle them well at all, from what I've seen it gets most of its LA from flat bonuses depending on how many racial "powers" you give it. Edit: Well, hell, I meant to stick this in my last post. Dwarves come out at LA+1, too. How shocked are we by this? |
| Reyemile04-19-07, 12:12 PM | Dwarves come out at LA+1, too. |
| NerdNumber104-19-07, 07:44 PM | Does anyone have another LA calculator (manual is ok) that is more accurate than this flawed mechanism. |
| ff6shadow04-20-07, 12:06 PM | But Dwarves are the most powerful PHB race. Not suprised at that one at all. |
| gordjohnson04-20-07, 07:06 PM | why are dwarves the most powerful race? |
| Damior04-20-07, 08:58 PM | IDK, Ive always considered halflings to be more powerful IMO, when played right. And cof a calculator, dont know any good ones that do the math for you, but check out YabbatheWhats feature point system, thats pretty acurate |
