I am working with a magical race that has a tail, and I was considering allowing them them to wear an extra ring on their tail. Considering an otherwise balanced race (much like a halfling), how much of a level adjustment would this be worth?

It's not worth a level adjustment. By the time you start nearing the limit on available magic item slots, you've got the capacity to "double them up", so to speak, and often at no additional cost. (See Magic Item Compendium.)

The real LA is going to be in what the extra limb can do in game terms. A decorative tail is worth little, whereas a prehensile or combat tail matters a lot. An extra slot is a minor consideration, IMHO.

None really, considering that you still have to pay for the extra magic item.

Or in the very least, not enough to warrant a LA increase on its own.

Thanks. In that case, I will either put them on a non-adjustment race, or add unbalanced ability adjustments.

Edit: I definately don't want an extra attack, but what if the tail could be used to cast spells. This could work one of two ways. Either the tell can meet only the somatic component of the spell, or it could do both the somatic and the material compnents, whichever was easier to balance.

Edit Again: I was going to wait to do the race, but I thought it may be easier if I went ahead and pakaged up the traits.

Firrit

These furry creatures of about halfling high, with weasel-like heads resting upon humanoids bodies. They have a penchant for magical items. Not partcularly wealthy, these people have treasured wands and such the way other humanoids treasure magic arms and armor. However, above all other treasures, magic rings are valued. Amongst the firrit, no adventurer has proven themselves successful until they acquire a magic ring.

Firrit Racial Traits

+2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, -2 Strength
Small-sized
Weezel base speed is 20 feet.
Prehensile Tail: Firrit tails are prehensile, and thus they are able to hold and manipulate light items with them. Most firrit spellcasters use their tails to trigger somatic and material components while their hands are full. Futhermore, a firrit's prehensile tail grants him an extra ring slot. Unfortunately, the tail lacks the strength to weild weapons effectively. However, it can hold wands and use them to make touch attacks.
Class Skills: Use Magic Device is a class skill for gremlins.
Low-Light Vision
+2 Appraise, Balance, Escape Artist, and Sleight of Hand.
Level Adjstment +1

I originally included a climb speed, since weasels have one, but I though it was to much. I would gladly drop the Intelligence to keep it +1. I know there are to many skill bonuses, but I couldn't decide. I think the cut is between Appraise and Balance.
