I'm not a very big fan of level adjustments. I understand they help balance the races, they really do. I was wondering what you guys think is the best way to deal with level adjustments in my campaign, especially if it starts at a lower level.

Many powerful races has a substitution to their LA called racial classes that break down the base races into class progressions, allowing players to start playing one from 1st level along with characters of standard races.

Savage Species and Planar Handbook has these racial classes. Perhaps some other books too.

Alright, thanks, do you think this would be the right place, if I needed, to ask for information on modifications I make and how "broken" they are?

Unearthed Arcana (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm) has LA buyoff.

Thanks for that link, I remembered seeing that at one point in time, I thought I just dreamed it up or something. :P

I don't know why, but that article is confusing me, I like the idea, but I'm not quite sture as to how I go about doing that, as in, I'm not sure how I pay off the level adjustments at higher levels, such as a +2 or +3. When would those characters be able to pay off their level adjustments?

Also, I'm looking through Savage Species at the moment.

LA +1 buyoff at 3
+2 6 9
+3 9 15 18

multiply LA x3, can buy off first level then, multiply reduced LA by 3 and add to first product to buy off another one, repeat until LA +0

Okay, so If I had a LA +2 character, I would reduce my LA to +1 at level 6, then to +0 at level 9?

Now, asuming I use this system, would the "monstrous" character be gaining class levels up to the listed levels? For example, would a Bugbear barbarian gain three levels and then trade the experience to become a level 2 bugbear barbarian?

when you would reach that lvl, you spend an amount of xp to reduce LA, then gain more xp to get the actual level. forget formula for it, but is cheaper in long run than advancing all the way with the original LA

you wouldn't be losing any levels

Okay, so I'm a level 2 bugbear, and I get enough experience to hit level 3, I then pay for my level adjustment?

correct, then continue advancing to lvl 3

Okay, I like that variant.

What, do you think is the easiest way to go about having a low-level party and level-adjusted characters? Like, for example, a +2 level adjustment character along in a party of level 2 characters.

If the said race has a racial class substitution, I'd use that. Mind you, LA buyoff variant and racial class substitution probably don't work well together.

I'm not sure if I should even be worried about this yet, I haven't reconfigured the races in my campaign yet. XD

The level buyoff is meant to happen well after the racial class has finished its progression. Once the progression is finished, it should be indistinguishable from the original race. Also note that in the buyoff, racial class levels are don't count towards the level at which you can buy off the LA. (note the gnoll example on the rules page,)

Zovc, you really just can't have a +2LA race be 2ECL without a racial progression. You might consider bumping the entire startup to level 3, or using a single racial hit die that would be completely replaced when you get the experience to reach level 3.

I suppose I could just start the party out at level 3, Assuming I have a character with a +1 level adjustment, would I start that character out as a level 2 character with their level adjustment paid off?

I use Destiny Levels when it comes to a 'quick fix.' I've play tested low LAs with it and it works out well.
