| innerchaos05-03-07, 01:19 PM | Well the problem is about planes as well as races but i decided to post here anyway. You know that githzerai home plane is Limbo. And its also known that Githzerai live orderly, contemplating lives.Their favorite (and favored) class is monk.By all accaunts they are lawful people. So why the heck are they living on limbo, the plane which is an incarnation of chaos. Are there racial and/or historical reasons for that? |
| Lionhearted05-03-07, 01:29 PM | Yupp. i think its mentioned in the EPH even |
| Naderion05-03-07, 02:39 PM | I would say they chosed limbo, because they think it's the perfect training ground for them to master the concepts of order and resisting the chaos of... well, chaos. :D |

Despite their outwardly ordered society, they are fiercely independent and adverse to servitude as a product of their origins as an Illithid slave race. They demonstrate the loyalty of individuals, rather than to a nebulous lawful ideal. This is based on information presented in The Planescape Planes of Chaos Boxed Set |
| Naderion05-04-07, 06:08 AM | If I am not completely mistaken, there wasn't such a thing as always lawful monks back in 2nd Ed., so there wasn't any probelem to make them chaotic. |
| Ogg05-04-07, 10:08 AM | Originally, (1st ed) Githerzerai were presented in the Fiend Folio as a Chaotic Neutral race & were more of a fighter/thief type race since then they have evolved into what they are in 3.5 a lawful neutral race who's basically chosen Limbo to hide out in. They basically must force an orderly society so they aren't consumed by the chaos of Limbo. You can leave Lawful alignment & still be a monk you just can't take any more levels in it but unlike paladin keep all your previous abilities. Unfortunately most of the monk oriented prestige classes require a Lawful alignment. Drunken Master is one of the only ones I can think of off hand that does not. I've been working on a concept character that abandons his monk training early & becomes one. TOo much Jackie Chan ;) |
| Naderion05-04-07, 01:00 PM | You can leave Lawful alignment & still be a monk you just can't take any more levels in it but unlike paladin keep all your previous abilities. What? I checked it and it is true, but does this really make any sense? I think logically, when you lose your inner harmony, almost all a monks powers should be lost. It's no genetic engenering, but simply mental controll of a body like everyone elses. |
| Shemeska the Marauder05-05-07, 11:36 PM | I should also point out that those githzerai who live as monks, do so in monasteries outside of the mainstream of githzerai society. Most githzerai live in massive cities in Limbo such as the Floating City, and Shrakatlor, while the monastic communities live in effective self-exile because of the will of the githzerai spiritual leader, Zaerith Menyar Ag Gith, their so-called Wizard-King. Most githzerai are simply some flavor of neutral, with no bias towards law. Only the monastics will be lawful, and then only because 3e game mechanics dictate that. The githzerai live in Limbo because the constant struggle is something of a racial self-affirmation to their quest to preserve their freedom. They fought against the illithids, and then they fought against th tyrannical intent of Gith and the githyanki, and Limbo presents them with a hostile environment that their force of will and desire to be free allows them to shape and control. |
| ATroubledMarco05-06-07, 02:40 PM | I checked the XPH and Complete Psionic. The Fist of Zuoken and Zerth Cenobite are two monk-based prestige classes that do not require a lawful alignment from these books, so you could work your way towards those if you liked. |
