Arcane Guyver 04-05-08, 05:37 PM	So I gave myself an incredible headache last night trying to figure out a stretch of rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide. I later referenced the SRD and the Rules Compendium, the latter of which completely ignores this particular rule (!?). Here it is: Mixing It Up Two creatures less than two size categories apart cannot occupy the same space in combat except under special circumstances (for example, when grappling, riding a mount, or if one is unconscious or dead). Creatures two size categories apart can occupy the same space without special circumstances. Half the normal number of creatures can occupy the space as usual (fractions are not allowed). Creatures may occupy the same square if they are three or more size categories different. It goes on with an example of how two stirges could occupy the same space as a human (and flank him), as they are two size categories different and up to four stirges can occupy a single square normally (so two Tiny + one Medium). My confusion is...by this wording, halflings and gnomes are effectively immune to stirges, because they are only one size category different and thus cannot share a square. Also, if a creature is three size categories different, does that mean the maximum number of creatures can occupy the same square as normal? So, 100 Fine creatures can occupy the same square as a Small creature? I *love* how the Rules Compendium, the final word on 3e rules, completely just leaves this out...
jradd777 04-05-08, 10:42 PM	I'd interpret it as simply using the largest possible example. A small creature takes up less space than a medium, so it should be easier for him/her to share space with an even smaller creature, than it would be for a medium creature to. It would possibly be considered a form of special circumstance or something, because all the creatures are so small.
