| dm_redstar03-28-08, 12:09 PM | Hey everyone, I wasn't sure if this belongs in the Races forum, the Class forum, or a Rules forum, but I had a (I think) fairly basic question of ECL of a few PC's in my game. 1. Drow Using these rules (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a) for "leveling" a Drow, my player is a Lvl1 Drow/Lvl1 Rogue. How many hit dice should he have? Does he gain skills points for his Drow "level" In terms of calculating experience, is it as if he was a character level of 2? 2. Lizardfolk Using Races of Faerun, this character is a "full Lizardfolk" Lvl1 Rogue Lizardfolk are listed as having a LA +2, and starting with 2HD. Does that mean he is ECL4, plus his rogue level, ECL5? If I were to remove his 2HD for being a lizardman, would that make him an ECL3? In terms of calculating experience, do I use his ECL? 3. Undead I know I tossed this one in there, but in LM, it states a 1HD skeleton is "equivalent to a level 1 character". So effectively it is a LA +0, plus it's hit points? Any help with this madness would be greatly appreciated! |
| ArochanoX03-28-08, 12:31 PM | 1) For the Drow rogue, the character has one level (1 HD) and has bought 1 point of LA (the drow level). The next level *must* be drow 2. - He should have 1 HD - He does not gain skill points for his drow level - His effective character level is 2, so he gets exp as a lvl 2 character. 2) I'm not familiar with the "full lizardfolk", but I can aswer some of your questions. - Yes. He is ECL 5 (2HD + 2LA + 1lvl) and thus equilevalent to a lvl 5 character. - By the rules you can't remove the racial HD as they're worse than actual class levels. Removing racial HD should increase LA, but there isn't any working formulas for that. - You use ECL for determining experience points and treasure gps. 3) I think you're referring to a table in Libris Mortis pg 32. The text on the same page says: Some undead that do not make good characters or cohorts are acceptable as lower-level followers. These creatures are listed below, along with the level that such a creature is considered to be for determining whether you can have it as a follower. In a few instances, these creatures are equivalent to a follower of a level slightly different from their ECL. In most cases, this is because the creatures are nonintelligent and have no level adjustment but still work fi ne as followers (not cohorts). So the skeleton doesn't have a level adjustment (because it's mindless). So you can't play a skeleton. There is though the necropolitan template in the same book pg 114, which let's you play an undead for a low cost. For more info of LA, RHD, ECL can be found from DMG pg 172-174 Monsters as Races. |

| Neutronium_Dragon03-28-08, 05:32 PM | 2) Lizardfolk LA is +1 rather than +2. I don't recall offhand how RoF valued it, but since it was a 3.25 book some of its numbers are out of sync with 3.5E. The 3.5E MM pegs it clearly at +1. (And it certainly isn't worth a +2 LA in any case.) |
| BugHunter03-28-08, 08:04 PM | If you look under the heading it shows the LA as +2 but when you read the meat section it shows the LA as +1 of course this is in Race's of Faerun. |
