I play with a pretty experienced group -- we have been rolling dice since 2 ed. We've ripped through pretty much every corner of Faerun and we have been to the Temple of Elemental Evil . . . and returned.

But now I have some prep time and I am making a wholly new campaign. I am building it from the small to the big. But still one of my concerns is races: I want to give my group a nice selection. But I come to you for advice. Let me know what you think about the races/ideas I have going forward and feel free to suggest other options or ideas that may be cool. Thanks.

Here is what I have so far --

These 3 are in for sure:
HUMANS - This one is definite. These particular humans are pilgrims and settlers who have fled a domineering tyranny some 300 years ago. They have established a small republic. It is composed of 6 cities and a few small towns. They have come into conflict with the local horde baddies (more on that later) and allied with the elves, Dwarves, and other PC races. So much so that not all of the cities in the country are human, some are elven, or dwarven.

Grey Elves - Swap +2 Int for +2 Cha. Make favored class sorcerers. I like the idea of elves being the most magical race, but not having to practice at it. They will be typical elves, haughty, arrogant, but at the same time willing allies of the humans because of the industrious nature and help in driving off the more barbaric races

Dwarves - Your standard mountain loving dwarves. Miners, crafters, but with a fairly high tech level (maybe even guns, definitely explosives). Militaristic. Your standard fantasy dwarves.

The Maybe's:

Necropolitans - From libris mortis. I would adjust their stats to make them more LA +0. They would also be a hidden race . . .the PC's could not use them until they found their hidden city. Essentially ancient humans (which hints to the new kingdom humans existed on this continent before them) who wanted to prolong thier life. They are always looking for corpses to turn into necropolitans.

Ibixians (goatfolk) -- once again change their LA to +0. This would be my wild barbarian people. Less civilized, but honorable, and willing to cooperate with civilization.

Wild Elves - another elf race. Lots of disdain between them and the Grey's.. By the by, now drow. Anyways, they would represent the nature loving side of Elves, the more fey kind.

Warforged - Originally servants of the humans. They acted as guards, soldiers, etc and still have that stigma. ONce they came over to the new land, they were given freedom. Since they cannot reproduce, anytime one passes the government will use their parts to reforge a successor.

sorry for the length. What do you think/suggest?

i like warforged and i think having both wild and gray elves might be good.

some Options i see missing (or just some ideas).

"Small race" Strongheart (i think, the one with the extra feat) halflings, as they used to be standerd but have grown along side humans for so long that they emulate them.

"Smashy-Smashy" Neanderthals {frostburn} could fit, just have them hailing from a distant north land.

"Dark 'mainstream' race" (other than Necropolitans) perhaps the shakram {rulled la +0 instead becuse they dont deserve the one and if they do just take the natural armor away} or hellbred.

"Holy race" something with a + to wisdom ... antrho toad? no idea.

"non-native" the unatural (yet living, sorry warforged) race. Uldra, half-delkar could be options.

"Sneaky" perhaps another race with the dark template, or changeling. something that is known to be the spy race.

Thanks for the ideas. I kind of want to avoid halflings (and gnomes for that matter) My players don't really like them, and personally I do not like the flavor -- at least not as PC races. I will consider what you said about another race like hellbred or shakram (sp?). Probably avoid anthro toads though, lol. Thanks though. Changelings (shifters for that matter too) won't fit because, I simply cannot make a civilization out of them, though if you can fill me in.

Any other ideas??
