Hey there, i've begun creating Subraces for Kenku because they play a major part in my campaign setting and i've been fine up until now. Can somebody please Give me an LA for this subrace Please.

Hawkling
A Hawkling is a smaller version of a Kenku with little wings connected to it’s arms and it's torso, being able to fly unlike others of it’s kind. It has a brown plumage and stands about 4 ft tall at it’s tallest, it has good eyesight and is able to see things further away than other Kenku.
Hawklings possess the following Racial Traits:
- +2 Dex, -2 Str, -2 Con: Hawklings are Agile, but are frail and cannot take hits very well
- Base Land Speed of 20ft
- Base Fly Speed of 40ft (average), a Hawkling cannot fly when wearing more than light armour or carrying more than a light load. A hawklign cannot use weapons carried in it's hands when flying nor can it cast spells requiring a somatic component or a material component
- Small Size: +1 Bonus to Armour Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on hide checks, -4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits ¾ those of medium characters
- +6 racial bonus on spot checks
- Natural Weapons: 2 Claws (1d3). These Claws are on the feet so can be used while flying.
- Alert – Hawklings are always alert for danger because of their smaller size, this forms itself in the shape of a +2 bonus on initiative checks
- Low-Light Vision
- Great Ally: Hawkling work exceptionally well with their allies. When successfully aided on a skill check or attack roll by an ally, or when aiding another, a Hawkling applies or gains a +3 bonus on his attack roll (instead of the normal +2 bonus). Furthermore, a Hawkling gains a +4 bonus on attack rolls against an opponent flanked by an ally (instead of the normal +2 bonus).
- Automatic Languages: Common and Kenku. Bonus Languages: Auran, Dwarven, Gnome, Goblin and Halfling.
- Favoured Class: Ranger

I was thinking an LA of at least +1, though i'm really not sure.

Thanks in advance

i was thinking that, but there's something else i wasn't sure on. I think i may put them on the feet.

Kinda goes better with what i'm aiming for i think

I'm not great at this, but by eyeballing I'd put it at +2, or maybe a strong +1.

Flight is a pretty impressive ability, even if you can't attack while flying--it lets you bypass a great number of traps, and you can still take plenty of actions. How about a Bard that flies 30' above the bad guys and sings to inspire courage? Or a Psion, who can fly and still use all his powers? And can these guys use the Aid Another action while flying? If so, that could be a neat tactic.

I think the game also tends to treat natural weapons as requiring a +1 LA. The +2 initiative is pretty nice as well.

The flight, claws, and initiative bonus seem to say +2 to me. This is countered by the extra -2 to ability scores, which isn't really all that much. Not to mention the hefty spot bonus and low-light vision.

Except for the -2 Con which kind of hurts, these guys seem like they could make powerful spellcasters (fly to get out of range, and once they take Still Spell they can basically cast at will while flying). And since LA hurts spell-casters the most, I might say to err on the side of a high LA. So I'd go for +2. You might add another small ability just to round it out.

Yes, I think that is balanced for +1 balanced by the stats, I would not play it as a +2 race because they are weak and vulnerable.

I Would make it a monstruous humanoid with 1 racial HD.

I think its fine as is as a +1 LA race. Maybe reduce the skill bonus a bit.

Thanks for all your help people, a 1HD would be a nice idea i think, though I've always been against the idea of adding HD onto a creature like this.

Thanks for the suggestions, +1 LA seems to be the majority vote, although the +2 LA may still be an idea. I'll test it out in an upcoming adventure and see how +1 LA goes, if it seems overpowered, i'll put it up to +2.

Thanks again

I'd say LA+1. I also think that alert could just be that they aren't able to be caught flat-footed, mainly because at low levels initiative +2 is great but it gets less useful at higher levels IMO, whereas can't be caught flat-footed is constantly useful.
