I saw that in the Monster Manual that for the Sahuagin settlements that are within 100 miles of an aquatic elf settlement that one percent of those sahuagin look exactly like an aquatic elf. These sahuagin are called Malenti.
I find this fascinating. Does this mean that aquatic elves and sahuagin are distantly related? How would the Malenti be viewed by "normal" sahuagin and "real" aquatic elves?

Well as malenti usually serve as spies on the aquatic elves the elves probably hate them.

Races of War (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9776664&postcount=11) has some stuff to say about the Malenti.

As to why they exist in the first place, the answer is that elves are toxic, and in the fluid environment of the ocean their failure seeps out and infects Sahuagin.

Any reasons that are not Sahuagin propaganda?:)

Seriously, though, how would failure become a physical phenomenon?

I would posit that the sahuagin are, in fact, a species which developed out of Aquatic Elves, perhaps as the result of some curse or pact with the dark powers of the deep. Malenti then would be atavistic sahuagin. All sahuagin communities produce Malenti, but they are usually killed at birth (or hatching or whatever), but those communities which are in the vicinity of Aquatic Elves keep their Malenti alive, as they prove useful.

The Threat from the Sea, is a triology of novels, the first one I read in Forgotten Realms, it's really good.

... oh right, one of the main characters is a Malenti and I want to remember that they explain pretty much everything about the Malenti's creation etc in those books.

So many years since I read them though, so I can't say for sure.

I have never read the novels. Can anyone tell me the explanation, or would that be a spoiler?

 I think there is a rumor, in 1st edition, that the drow are responsible for the creation of the Sahaugin, and that they must have experimented on the aquatic elves to create them.

Can we please stop with the elf bashing? I'd vote that the Sahaugin created the Malenti for the possible purpose of spying on their enemies, the Aquatic Elves.

According to Eberron canon, it's not being born near sea elves. As Keith Baker so eloquently put it: "You are what you eat"

I like it, and that's what I use :D

Elves are a wonderful race. So are the rest that we have to play with. If you dont like them perhaps that is more a reflection on yourself than on the make believe race?
