| Nat_2006-10-07, 01:45 AM | OK, i gots a question... During Character creation, the steps go... Ability Scores, Class and Race, Assign ability scores, Record racial and class features, Select Skills, Feat Selection, then equipment... See PHB Pg. 6 Now since race features come before choosing skills and feats, and Humans get a bonus feat at first level, is this feat selected before everything else? And if so, if I select Able Learner from Races of Destiny Pg.150, can I buy points in any skills with the X4 at first level??? Example, Bob the first level Human Fighter with 12 Intelligence takes Able Learner as his Human bonus feat then spends his skill points(2+intX4 for fighter) He buys 4 ranks in Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, and Heal(bonus for being human). Does this work legally????? And does anyone understand what im talking about???? And is this the correct board to post this on lol??? |
| Rerecros06-10-07, 01:59 AM | There is no official order as far as i am aware of. race, class ability scores are chosen whenever is most apropriate, unless you have a crazy DM. |
| Eshenaleros06-10-07, 02:02 AM | look, basically you put this stuff in whatever order comes naturally for you. personally i choose my class and then work my character around it (though it's usually a barbarian). either way, yes you can have able learner the way you want it. |
| Nat_2006-10-07, 02:05 AM | So dosnt Able Learner a bit to good then??? It states that all skills are "in-class" for you and that gives alot of potential for skills choices... Also i heard that you have to go in that order when making characters... |

Also i heard that you have to go in that order when making characters... you heard from some one who doesn't know what they are talking about. |
| SirGeshko06-10-07, 02:11 AM | IIRC, Able Learner only reduces the cost of Cross-Class skills; it doesn't remove the cap. At 1st level, you could purchase 4 ranks in class skills, and 2 ranks in cross class. Each skill point would buy a rank, so you'd have more cross class skills. |
| Crimson_Concerto06-10-07, 02:12 AM | you heard from some one who doesn't know what they are talking about. Agreed. |
| Eshenaleros06-10-07, 02:15 AM | able learner only makes other class skills seem like classskills. therefore, you can be a barbarian and still put ranks in knowledge as if it was a class skill. the way i see it, you act on things that your character would have had from birth as things they wouldhave had from birth |
| neilthrun06-10-07, 02:22 AM | Here is a thought. You select as your extra feat openminded. You get 5 skill points and assign them immediately. You can then use the skills in addition to your lvl skills to qualify for your 1st lvl feat. If you select open minded as your 1st level feat, you do so last and assign the skillpoints then. Therefore the skill points from that feat cant help you meet requirements for your extra human feat. Crazy huh? |

The only hard and fast rule is that you have to qualify for a prestige class the level before you take it. So if you are 6th level and want to take a prestige class for which you are missing a feat, you can't use your 6th level feat slot to take the feat and then take the prestige class as your 6th level class. |

Your skills reflect your character's personal knowledge he has accumulated during his life since the able learner feat can only be taken at first level it is assumed your character was raised to learn things quickly. Any skills you pick up at first level are indicative of your characters lifetime of learning. If your barbarian has 4 ranks in knowledge:history his tribe has a rich oral tradition and his elders spent plenty of time teaching the tribe of their past. Your character simply learns things more easily than most people, he doesn't have any innate knowledges. |
