| EternalWizard04-13-07, 08:20 AM | i'm sure that there is another thread like this, but i just couldn't find it :( anyways, i'd like some race suggestions for a monk obviously :) i want the ECL (LA and racial HD) to be up to +2 |
| Zumarai04-13-07, 08:25 AM | 18th level thri-kreen monk (2 monstrous humanoid HD) with Greater Multi-Weapon Fighting, Multiattack and a 10 Str: Full Attack: Flurry of blows +13/+13/+13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and 4 claws +13 each and bite +13 19 attacks per round. |
| The_Shaman04-13-07, 09:04 AM | Ugh. |
| DEMONisbest04-13-07, 11:24 AM | http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=809257 realy hard to find ;) |
| EvilVegan04-13-07, 11:33 AM | Firebreathing changeling monk/warshaper. http://kgb7.com/gblog/image/dhalsim23ym6wi.gif |
| Valheru604-13-07, 02:06 PM | How about a Githzerai monk? They get +6 Dex and +2 Wis, but -2 Int. They also get inertial armor (grants a +4 armor bonus to AC), and they get psionic abilities. |
| EternalWizard04-13-07, 02:42 PM | 18th level thri-kreen monk (2 monstrous humanoid HD) with Greater Multi-Weapon Fighting, Multiattack and a 10 Str: Full Attack: Flurry of blows +13/+13/+13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and 4 claws +13 each and bite +13 19 attacks per round. ok your build is totally cool but thri-kreen also have LA + so u lose 4 Monk levels which i think is too much :( (although the free Deflect Arrows feat is a great pro) |
| EvilVegan04-13-07, 04:08 PM | the non-psionic thrikreen is 2 HD and +1 LA, not +2 LA. So with level adjustment buy off you can be thrikreen 2/monk 18. Worth it for the number of extra attacks (mostly). |
| The_Shaman04-13-07, 04:32 PM | How about a Githzerai monk? They get +6 Dex and +2 Wis, but -2 Int. They also get inertial armor (grants a +4 armor bonus to AC), and they get psionic abilities. Nope, not just +4 AC... Psi-likes auto-augment with HD, so around the end it will be a whole lot more than +4. Not to mention that their concussion blast... well, it's like magic missile on steroids. Yep, Gith monks are fun. |
| EternalWizard04-13-07, 05:29 PM | Not to mention that their concussion blast... What cocncussion blast?? What's that and where did u read about it? |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s004-13-07, 05:44 PM | 18th level thri-kreen monk (2 monstrous humanoid HD) with Greater Multi-Weapon Fighting, Multiattack and a 10 Str: Full Attack: Flurry of blows +13/+13/+13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and unarmed strike +13/+8/+3 and 4 claws +13 each and bite +13 19 attacks per round. Actually, you only get either your natural attacks or the Flurry o' Blows. Also, Monks and monestaries are not part of the Tri-Kreen's culture. Go for ranger, barbarian, druid, adept, fighter, etc. Unles you just want to powergame. |
| Argo04-13-07, 06:24 PM | Orc. And, to a lesser extent, Half-Orc. |
| EternalWizard04-13-07, 06:37 PM | Actually, you only get either your natural attacks or the Flurry o' Blows. According to FAC u can do both. The wrong thing is that u get eother the claws attacks OR the bite attack as secondary attacks. The truth that on anothre thread about Thri-Kreens there is an extencive conversation so let's not have it again Also, Monks and monestaries are not part of the Tri-Kreen's culture. Go for ranger, barbarian, druid, adept, fighter, etc. Unles you just want to powergame. in MMII it is said that there are Thri-Kreens that becoma monks, so it's not actually a situation powergaming |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s004-13-07, 06:40 PM | Orc. And, to a lesser extent, Half-Orc. Orcs are ok, because of the str bump, but they are classified a CE, and are almost always fighters, clerics, barbarians, druids, and maybe some rangers. I don't think they would have the drive for a monk's life style. Halh orcs however could easily be the orphan adopted by the monks. |
| EternalWizard04-13-07, 06:43 PM | Orc. And, to a lesser extent, Half-Orc. im not really an orc-fan in fact my vanity doesn't allow me to play a race like that :) |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s004-13-07, 06:50 PM | In MMII it is said that there are Thri-Kreens that becoma monks, so it's not actually a situation powergaming *gets MMII, flips to pgs 195-196 I have read it six times, and nowhere does it mention monks. It actually sas that they are nomadic, and almost completely never have permenant settlements. A monestary is a permanent settlement. While yes, while there is the occasional monk, they are periahs, and are super rare. To futher my argument, they are classified as CN. This furthers the rarity of a monk. Now if your DM would change some stuff, making it more martial artist, like taking away the language and age abilities of the monk, but to even out ad some more fight stuff, then yes, it could work. |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s004-13-07, 06:51 PM | im not really an orc-fan in fact my vanity doesn't allow me to play a race like that :) Why? Orcs are awesome. Great for rping, and the look on the pally's face when you aren't evil... priceless. |
| Valheru604-13-07, 07:25 PM | Nope, not just +4 AC... Psi-likes auto-augment with HD, so around the end it will be a whole lot more than +4. Not to mention that their concussion blast... well, it's like magic missile on steroids. Yep, Gith monks are fun. I meant the Githzerai from the MM, but the Githzerai from the EPH are alright. What cocncussion blast?? What's that and where did u read about it? Concussion is a power from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. |
| Merryadocc04-13-07, 08:39 PM | ok your build is totally cool but thri-kreen also have LA + so u lose 4 Monk levels which i think is too much :( (although the free Deflect Arrows feat is a great pro) Take the feat Improved Unarmed Strike from Tome of Battle and the four level loss no longer hurts your unarmed damage, but the rest of your class features will still be taking a dive. Also, adding Snap Kick to the Thri-kreen would make it even more obscene. As far as core goes I prefer making Half-Orc (though Wood Elves are core as they are in the MM) monks and pumping all my points into Strength, if you're gonna melee you may as well dish it out and make your cleric earn his keep. ;) |
| The_Shaman04-13-07, 10:58 PM | I meant the Githzerai from the MM, but the Githzerai from the EPH are alright. Concussion is a power from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. I do prefer the EPH version, to be honest. The MM one has permanent armor, but the EPH one has good chances of having the armor for as long as it's necessary, if not longer. The other powers are imo useful as well. This is concussion blast: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/concussionBlast.htm |
| Dragonwriter04-13-07, 11:39 PM | I would suggest an Illumian from Races of Destiny, since illumians are not subject to the "you can't go back" multiclassing rule with monks and paladins. |
| Threefists04-14-07, 12:18 AM | Personal Favourites. Half-Orc: None of their racial penalties directly affect a Monk combat wise, and their Darkvision helps where a Human Monk would be penalized. Also, who would expect a Half-Orc of remaining cool and composed instead of running around going "Krusk SMASH puny Goblins!" Dwarf: Oddly enough the Dwarf makes a damn fine Monk...it's a bit of a drag at first, but you get those first 4 levels and the grappling feat tree and all of a sudden you've got a character that makes the Reaping Mauler look like a pacifist when you add the Dwarf's stability racial trait to the mix. Also having a Dwarf OUTRUN horses is rather cool... Hobgoblins: Naturally lawful and with a martial mindset, a Hobbie makes for a damn good monk, since some of their racial stats work into the Monk's abilities and then you've got a perfect Monk to use with just a little bit of LA to work with or get rid of. Makes for a nice 'Exotic' Monk or your tortured anti-hero type...also *****-slapping Elves and putting them into negatives with a single slap never loses it's appeal. Sea Elf: In aquatic campaigns, with the right feat (trying to remember the exact name for it), this race/class combination because nearly all-powerful. Apply the Monk's speed bonus to swim speed instead of land speed, and you've got a character that can outswim freaking sharks and never needs to rely upon armor which inevitably rusts away. Just my :twocents: |
| mythSSK04-14-07, 06:18 AM | Actually, you only get either your natural attacks or the Flurry o' Blows. You can flurry of blows and use your natural weapons as secondary attacks. This has been gone over a number of times before. |
| The_Shaman04-14-07, 07:41 AM | What gets me a bit stumped is that supposedly you can use FoB, make unarmed attacks with your extra limbs and use natural attacks affiliated with those limbs on top of that. That's just... I don't know, weird imo. |
| snakeman83004-14-07, 05:08 PM | I agree with most of the races posted above (though maybye not full-orc. The Wis penalty isn't the best). But please stop basing your arguments against a race on sterotypes. Every single race has its wierdo's (Proven by succubus palidans) and can be any class they desire. Yes, M1kh43l_P4r4d1s0, this means you. Catfolk rouge/monks with asetic rouge (CA), spring attack, and catfolk pounce (RotW) are awesome. If your foe is flat-footed: 1. charge 2. flurry (all are sneak attacks) (stun them with one attack) 3. leap away 4. If they were stunned, repeat steps 1-3 until they are dead Not quite as cool as the Tri-keen, but deadly nevertheless. Oh, and +1 LA I've also got a homebrew race called the homangui that make excellent monks for +2 LA and no racial HD that are already posted on these boards. I'll put up the stats here soon. |
| snakeman83004-14-07, 05:16 PM | Homangui -humanoid (reptilian) -2 Strength, +4 Dexterity: homangui are lean, but incredebly quick and agile. -base land speed 40 ft, swim 40 ft, climb 40 ft -+2 Natural Armor -medium size -amphibious(Ex): homangui have gills as well as lungs and can switch between them at will. -blindsense 30 ft(Ex): homangui have a sort of electric sonar -blindsight 30ft(Ex): (though not effective against elementals, constructs, oozes, undead, objects or plants unless they have either the fire or cold subtypes (flaming and frost weapons are also detected)) Homangui have heat-sensing pits much like that of a viper. -low-light vision(Ex) -Darkvision 60ft (Ex) -Quickness 1/minute(Ex): Homangui get an additional standard or move action once per minute. -scent/keen scent(Ex): when out of the water, Homangui pick up scents like a snake does, giving them the scent quality. When in the water, they have the keen scent ability (se the shark enteriy in the MM) -Disarm: Disarm is a dexterity-governed class skill for homangui. A homangui attempting a disarm may use the skill check in place of an attack roll. In addition, homangui recieve Improved Disarm as a bonus feat when they reach 5th level. -+2 racial bonus on saves versus poison and disease. -+8 racial bonus on swim and climb. A homangui uses it's Dex modifier or Str modifier for climb, whichever is higher. A homangui can always take 10 on a swim or climb check. -Homangui do not need to check for non-lethal damage because of heat as often as other creatures. They check only once a day. -Level adjustment +2 -Favored class: any, but most NPC's are monks instead of warriors. |
| Shadow,Plainswalker04-15-07, 12:39 PM | What about half-dragon? A +3 Level adjustment to be sure, but the massive +8 Str bonus helps mitigate the low BAB, (not to mention the +2's to Con, Int, and Cha), plus your get 3 natural attacks, +4 Natural Armor, and a breath weapon, Dark and low-light visions, plus immunity to sleep and paralysis. And the variant racial progression from Races of the Dragon let you start at first level. |
| The_Shaman04-15-07, 02:24 PM | It is okay imo, but you can be a bit fragile at first. Mind you, the feat that allowed half-dragons to breathe every 1d4 rounds can be very useful. |
| JellyPooga04-15-07, 03:07 PM | I'm enjoying playing a Half-Ogre Monk at the mo. Big Strength, Big Size, Big Damage Grapple everything with a good chance of success (he's ECL 6 and he actually has a chance grappling a Bonyard (Libris Mortis) - a high CR creature that's designed to be the ultimate in grapple-fu. Admittedly it's not much of one, but a chance nevertheless) Oh, he's a pacifist too :D |
| the_great_mighty_nerd04-15-07, 06:34 PM | the answer you are looking for is buomman |
| The_Shaman04-15-07, 07:18 PM | I think the half-minotaurs from Dragon have a pretty decent time when it comes to bashing stuff, too. Haven't played one, though. |
| Thief_of_Hope04-15-07, 07:35 PM | I agree with JellyPooga, half-ogre is a great reace for a monk. For a LA+2, you have large size (and all the reach benefits thereof), incredible strength, no wisdom penalty, AC bonuses, and higher damage dice because of large size. Large size also helps if you decide to become a grapple-y monk. There's also the fact that you aren't humanoid, and are therefore immune to spells and abilities that target humanoids, like charm person. Of course, if you decided you were willing to forsake several levels of monk, you could always be a half-ogre half-dragon, giving you a total of +14 Str for a +5 LA. You would also get a benefit from the half-dragon template many other races don't get, that being wings due to your large size. |
| The Badger04-15-07, 07:38 PM | Seconding the suggestion of Boumman, they get a +2 to wis -2 to cha and I believe they are LA+0. Their culture is completely focused on being a monk. |
| Thief_of_Hope04-15-07, 07:44 PM | Seconding the suggestion of Boumman, they get a +2 to wis -2 to cha and I believe they are LA+0. Their culture is completely focused on being a monk. What and where are the Boumman? I've never heard of them. |
| goldomark04-15-07, 11:24 PM | One of my players once played a githzerai half-shadow dragon. Just horrible, +8 str, +6 dex, +2 con, +2 wis, +2 cha and all of the psi-like abilities of the gith and a +4 bonus to your natural AC. Plus your immuned to sleep, paralysis and energy drain. Also, its breath weaopn deals negative levels. Always usefull at higher levels, where 6d8 of damage doesn't matter anymore. And the buyoman are in the planar handbook. |
| the_great_mighty_nerd04-16-07, 01:13 AM | I ******* love Buommans, a Buomman fighter with zen archery and mechanus gear can be more awesome than you're used to. |
| The_Shaman04-16-07, 10:17 AM | Buoman are in the manual of the planes iirc. As for gith shadow dragon, it's good but I'm a bit alarmed at LA + for a monk. With +2 from the githzerai, I can only think of the draconic or feral templates to add. |
| G_Mancer04-16-07, 10:28 AM | FoB modifies your full attack. witthyour Full attack, which inclused your natural wepaons, you get one extra monk weapon attack and give all your attacks a -2. you cant flurry with natural weapons, but when they're secondary attacks you can. you'de be flurrying with your unarmred attack and then get normal secondary natural attacks. also, you dont get 4 extra sets of unarmed attacks just because you have four arms. (though you may with multiweapon fighting maybe? i'm not sure) it's jsut normal full attack, with one more unarmed attack and -2 to all attacks. end of story. none the less, that many attacks is pure power if you can hit with all of them. you should think about taking rogue lvls. thers a feat called Acestic rogue from Complete Adventurer that lets you mutliclass as monk and rogue... also rogue lvls improve your unarmed dmg. |
| The_Shaman04-16-07, 03:15 PM | Well, I've always considered that just no good. If you're getting natural attacks with your arms, and then you do additional attacks because you have those arms, that starts to make less sense. Besides, if you take the feats that allow you more attacks if you have pairs of claws, that can really get annoying. I'm pretty sure natural attacks and TWF with the same limbs were not suppoed to be used together. Well, if they were, so much better, but then just go for anthropomorphic octopi monks. |
| Steely_Dan04-17-07, 03:19 AM | I think the half-minotaurs from Dragon have a pretty decent time when it comes to bashing stuff, too. Haven't played one, though. Yes, it is a disgustingly powerful template for LA +1. |
| The_Shaman04-17-07, 08:35 AM | +1? Always thought it was +2. Oh well, I do think many templates are underpowered as it is... Now feral half-minotaur sounds like it can be trouble. |
| Captain_Willard04-17-07, 08:41 AM | +1? Always thought it was +2. Oh well, I do think many templates are underpowered as it is... Now feral half-minotaur sounds like it can be trouble. Don't forget Mineral Warrior… |
| Armoracia Rusticana04-17-07, 09:59 AM | And Drow-Touched. Fearless, +6 Str, +6 Con... +1 LA?! |
| edventure04-17-07, 04:11 PM | I'm creating a Beastman monk for a new campaign. (It's a race in the blackmoor d20 setting.) It gets +8 str, +2 dex, +4 con, -2 chr, and its extra long arms give it a 10' reach at medium size for a +2 LA. He should be an Arcanopath Monk by 7th level. |
