Hello,

Can anyone point out a low HD, no/low LA playable monsterous race that would make a good cleric?

Thanks

How' bout Goblins? No racial hit dice, no LA. The CHA penalty would hurt turn attempts but the small size and DEX bonus would boost your AC. 30' move and Darkvision is always nice. If you wear medium or heavy armor you could offset the move penalty by having a mount, they get a +4 to Ride checks.

Exactly how monstrous do you want?
The anthropomorphic bat from Savage Species has only one animal HD (replaced by first class level), +6 Wisdom, 5' land speed and 20' fly speed... And no level adjustment.

I checked every single core race, monster or otherwise. The only one with a bonus to any mental stat and no LA is the grey elf. +2 int, +2 dex, -2 con, -2 str.

Try playing an old character from any race. Add on +2 wis, +2 int, +2 cha, -3 str, -3 con, -3 dex. I'd get one with a good physical stat bonus like a gnome or dwarf for con. That'll help offset the physical penalty. And even though the gnome has a str penalty most of his gear is lighter so you can actually carry more. Plus his small size gives a bonus to AC & AB, which helps offset the dex penalty. There you go, play an old gnome: +2 wis, +2 int, +2 cha, -5 str, -1 con, -3 dex. +1 AB, +1 AC.

Thanks all, this was great. Orchomenos's suggestion probably was the best match, it will be perfect. Again, thank you all for your help.

I don't think bats can cast spells with somatic components. Dunno if that race can talk either. Might want to get the still spell feat.

old undead elf (-1 dex con=n/a -3 str +2 int, wis and cha) (any intellegent undead works, get your hands on what is it called? Libris Mortis? heal yourself with inflict spells and your allies with cure spells.)

i don't have libris mortis, but people mention plenty of it's material, summon an army of undead. use them as shields.

Here are all your choices from WOTC published material for +0 LA races that get a bonus to wisdom:

Anthropomorphic Bat: -4 Str +6 Wis -2 Cha, small, 5 ft. (fly 20 ft. average), blindsense (ex), druid, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Lizard: -4 Str +2 Dex +4 Wis -4 Cha, small, 20 ft., druid, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Monkey: -4 Str +2 Dex +4Wis -2 Cha, small, 30 ft., druid, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Rat: -4 Str +2 Dex +4 Wis -4 Cha, small, 15 ft., rogue, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Raven: -6 Str +2 Dex +4 Wis -4 Cha, small, 10 ft. (fly 30ft. poor), rogue, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Toad: -4 Str -2 Dex +6 Wis -2 Cha, small, 5 ft., cleric, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Anthropomorphic Weasel: -4 Str +2 Dex +4 Wis -4 Cha, small, 20 ft., attach (ex), druid, monstrous humanoid, savage species pg.215

Jermlaine: -6 Str +6 Dex -2 Con -2 Int +6 Wis -6 Cha, tiny, 40 ft., rogue, fey, monster manual 2 pg.131

Buomman: +2 Wis -2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., monk, humanoid (buomman, extraplanar), planar handbook pg.08

"Lesser" Aasimar: +2 Wis +2 Cha, medium, 30 ft., light (sp), paladin, humanoid (planetouched), player’s guide to faerun pg.191

Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold: -4 Str +2 Dex -2 Con +3 Int +3 Wis +3 Cha, small, 30 ft., sorcerer, dragon (kobold, reptilian, dragonblood), monter manual pg.161 and races of the dragon pg. 39

Vanara: -2 Str +2 Int +2 Wis, medium, 30 ft. climb 20 ft., spirit shaman, humanoid (vanara), oriental adventures pg.15 – Note: in a 3.5 oriental adventures update found in Dragon magazine, vanara were updated to no longer have any ability score adjustments.

You can also add the Dragonborn of Bahamut pseudo-template without level adjustment to any of the races with a bonus to wis (beside the venerable dragonwrought kobold) and gain +2 con -2 dex, which stacks with your original ablity adjustments. That may be helpful for a lot of these, especially for the Buomman, who would RAW lose their vow of silence when they become a Dragonborn of Bahamut.

Dragonborn: +2 Con -2 Dex, same as base creature, same as base creature, fighter and the base creatures, humanoid (dragonblood, same as base creature), races of the dragon pg.5

Other than that, you can just increase your age level and suffer the physical ability score penalties.

Thank you for taking the time to put that list together.

No problem... I made that list a while ago and I just copy and paste it whenever this sort of topic comes up (it comes up surprisingly often).

If you can put up with an LA of +1 the Grey Orcs work quite well with +2 Wisdom and other benifits.

I am still not convinced they are LA +1 either....
