| Dfranco8312-14-07, 10:28 AM | I'm going to play a game with a new group and their level is 12+ Most of the group are melee types (Tome of Nine Swords, etc.) The party has a Paladin/Warmage or something like that with a Cleric Cohort. There is a ranger, a few others and I think that is it. I wanted to possibly play a Monstrous Race and maybe with either a level or so in Rogue or maybe a Mage Type. I have a few races in mind; a Janni and or maybe a Hound Archon, but again I want to fill the ranks per say. Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate the help. |

Catfolk makes good rogue with their +4 in dex and some other neat ability's and only la 1. and high dex is also good for ranged touch attacks and ac i think you should rather go to the char op boards they can help you more with this |

| ZiggZagg12-14-07, 01:12 PM | Pixie ftw! Bonuses in all abilities that matter for that kinda character, supernatural invisibility, fly speed, DR, SR, small...what isn't to love? Granted the +4 LA is a damper on CL, but that what LA buyoff is for :D |
| Keenath12-14-07, 01:33 PM | Yeah, if you can't buy off the LA (which in your case is more along the lines of reducing your class level by one or so), you'll want something with lots of HD and not much LA -- a giant or similar things, for example. |
| HernetheHunter12-14-07, 02:57 PM | Ogre Mage!!! They rock and then there was an ecology in an issue of Dragon that gave variant ogre mages... |
| Dfranco8312-14-07, 03:30 PM | Do you know which Dragon it was? |
| Muglock12-14-07, 04:36 PM | Heh... Ogre Mage's are in the Monster Manual, right after the page on Ogre's. They are insane as hell, they get crazy bonuses, and would make a crazy fighter/wizard, especially if you give him some mithril light armor, jack up his dexterity and use his natural spells. I would definitley multi-class Fighter and Wizard with an Ogre-mage, you dont need any armor or weapons even, so it'd be perfect. |
| runestar12-14-07, 06:49 PM | When choosing a monster race to play, you will at least want one which works. Ogre mage stinks. I am better off playing a gish compared to the piece of crap that it is (as a PC). That is a very high premium you are paying for invis-at-will. Hound archon is better off as a cohort or planar ally, IMO, since I really only want one for its aid-and-teleport-at-will capabilities. Monster races tend to make poor casters, since spellcasters suffer the most from lost lvs. Pixies do make excellent rogues though. |
| HernetheHunter12-15-07, 12:30 AM | The ecology issue was 349. It gives two alternate SLA lists, one for a shadow based (descended) and one psionic. I admit I did not like the LA but I enjoyed playing my character. Also I think there was some errata published for them. |
