I'm sure there is a thread lost somewhere in the ethers of the boards covering this but I can't find it.

So my campaign setting is a conglomeration of some of my own stuff, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and (bum bum BUM) Final Fantasy. Yeah I include things like chocobos, airships, guns, etc. Well I have decided to add moogle to the list of playable races as well as a monster race. I havent statted out a typical moogle encountered in the world or anything, but I have two players wanting to play moogle brothers and here is what I thought of for Moogle racial stats:

Type: Fey
-2 STR, +2 DEX, -2 CON, +4 Cha
Small size
Low-light vision
Movement: Speed 20 ft./Fly 30 ft. (good)
1/day: Calm Emotions
+2 bonus to perform: dance
LA: +1

So what do you, oh wise and knowing denizens of the boards, think of my moogle? I think it's pretty ok. Nothing terrible. They'd make awesome bards and sorcerers. I got one guy wanting to play a bard, the other a duskblade with a ranged variant (some homage to a moogle only job in some FF game or another). Look good? Thanks in advance!

Moogle don't really have perfect flight. I would change it to Good since they can hover but they can't change direction like a will o' wisp.

They don't have a spell-like ability like the ones you have there either I would take those out.

Where's the obligatory bonus to the Dance skill?
Toran_A_Sunder

I added the spell-like abilities based on the moogle entry that I read for the FFRPG. it speaks about a calming influence that moogles encountered have as a sort of natural protection.

The flight thing I'll consider only because it doesnt really affect to much that I've seen in games (the difference in maneuverability I mean).

Thanks for your input :-D

Edit: I'm dropping charm person but keeping calm emotions. keeping flight as perfect.

Not bad. I'd drop the maneuverability as well, though.

Wait are you talking about that FF 3.5 made by Raizdou? That one is very poor in the mechanical quality in that supplement

The thing is moogle have wings, and wings don't allow for perfect movement in flight. Humming birds have good flight. That is saying Moogle are better at flying than hummingbirds.

The flying template is +2 LA. Anything with wings is usually +2 or greater... I'm not saying its fair. I'm just mentioning.

Instead of calm emotions, what about sanctuary as a spell-like ability? Yeah calm emotions makes sense, but sanctuary could keep them alive as well.

(...this would make a great artificer. :) )

Moogles are probably tiny, but with powerful build giving them reach. A moogle in a grapple is in trouble. They are only about a foot tall anyways.

I don't know who it's by. But I don't believe it was d20 related. A friend sent me the link and it was more the description of them as a character race than mechanics. I see what you are saying about perfect maneuverability. I'll drop it to good.

The flying template also gives ability bonuses and things other than wings, which is why it is a +2 template. And again, as mentioned above this is all inspired from an entry in some FFRPG and it mentions they have a calming influence on creatures near them, hense the calm emotions.

Moogles are probably tiny, but with powerful build giving them reach. A moogle in a grapple is in trouble. They are only about a foot tall anyways.

I've seen them look tiny and small in games. To make it a more viable race for my players I'm making them small.

Favored class bard would work alright, except that my friends and I have never worried about XP penalties from multiclassing. So it's not something thats ever affected our games. But a fitting idea, no less :D

Thanks again guys.

What about Tiny with (powerful build) because of the roundness, then giving the players (really powerful build) to give them the ability to use the reach. NPC moogles might not have this.
Aryxbez

In my opinion, moogles should be small and powerful build.

Of course my version of the moogle would definitely be different than yours. In fact they might even be a little to powerful. At least for the LA I give it.

Can moogles fly faster than they can walk? That might help fix the "overpowerd" flight problem if you drop the fly speed to 20'. Though I don't think it's too bad.

It would be nice to incorporate their magical dancing somehow. Letting them substitute perform(dance) in place of vocal or instrumental perform checks would be perfect, IMO. Given the +2 bonus, every moogle bard will want to dance instead of playing an instrument. Heck, just the immunity to silence would make it worth it.

There have been several different versions of moogles on these boards. Unfortunately, I have the like to none of them at the moment :weep:

What version of the moogle are you getting (most?) your inspiration from? FFIV moogles were much different from Crystal Cronicle moogles, which were much different from FFTA moogles. Just so all us FF fans are on the same page here.

As for the +2 dance, I don't really feel strongly about it for good, but I do want to say that the only dancing moogle I remember seeing is Mog, and he probably was sporting a prestige class of some sort. A prestige class I, now, am compelled to attempt creating to make to go along side my FF Dragoon prestige class, which will primer on these boards soon (and by soon, I mean later; and by later, I mean when I get off my lazy behind and finish it :P ). But I digress.

As it stands, with the 30ft (good) fly speed and more stat bonuses then penalties (especially the extremely high, caster friendly +4 Cha), I would say your moogle is currently +2 LA at least. But I bet that if we wish really, really hard, Yaba will appear and tell us what's what :D

Well, moogles are spell casters, so tiny is actually good for them. A tiny moogle sorcerer could easily enough get themselves down to fine size with spells, for a ridiculous AC, then release lots of high powered magic.

For your Moogle, are you certain that Monstrous Humaniod wouldn't be better than fey?

From the MM, page 295:

Monstrous humanoids are similar to humanoids, but with monstrous or animalistic features. They often have magical abilities as well.

Also, are you are using the Chocobo stats published by Paizo in Dragon 323? Or are you using your own custom Chocobo stats?

I'm curious. My Paladin Ren has a Chocobo mount named Micah, using the Paizo version. (Based off of the FFIV chocobo).

I had a topic in the What's a player to do forum which helped me decide between the typical Warhorse mount, or the Chocobo. I received requests for the stats, but couldn't give them out, because Paizo's work is closed content.

Now I want to see different people's take on the Chocobo, and if possible, direct requests to the homebrew stats.

1) There are really 3 choices to your moogle type: Fey (as is orignally stated), monstrous humanoid, or magical beast.
2) Change +4 Charisma to +2 Wisdom and +2 Charisma. Moogles always seem to know whats going on. +4 stats are always a danger for character races.
3) The only time I ever remember seeing a Moogle fly was in FF7, and that was only after feeding him a ton of nuts. Just a note.
4) Even still, with my modifications, it seems it is still missing something. I might add later.
Holy_Beholder

I would personally qualify them as magical beasts.

I agree that they should be Fey, They're supposed to be the fairies of Final Fantasy! Sounds like this moogle race is mostly inspired by FF3/6 (whichever you prefer to call it) He would totally be small size then. I would give them a 20 ft fly speed. I'm glad you lowered the maneuverability to good though, as creatures with perfect maneuverability tend to be incorporeal or made of air, not winged beasts.

I want everyone long and hard to think about a moogle in full-plate carring a scythe. Just think about. Someone should draw a picture. Maybe me. If I could draw moogles. And full plate. <sigh>

I remember I made a Moogle character many years back. I think is was 2E. Anyway, The 3.5 analog to it would be powerful build, but for small -> medium. I just figured if Mog used the same weapons as everyone else in FF3/6, maybe it's some special ability of theirs. YMMV. Also, I think the moogles could fly in FF9.

I don't see moogles as particularly agile and nimble, so I personally disagree with the +2 Dex. Also, a good choice for favored class would be Bard, in my opinion. Put that dance bonus to work!

Edit: I didn't read any replies except the OP. Looking back, my post looks really weird. It is funny that the powerful build idea wasn't just mine.

In most FF games, something I am a bit of a expert in, Mogs are generally between 2-3 feet tall, small would be their size, tiny no. And even in others, like the new FF 12, they are more then 3 ft tall.
They are a kind of fey, a mix between a mole and a bat, don't ask me I didn't make then but it's what they are.

Moogles

Moogle Racial Traits

-2 Strength, +2 Charisma.
Fey: Moogles are fey, and as such they are not subject to spells or effects that specifically target humanoids, such as charm person or hold person.
Small: As Small creatures, moogles gain a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but they must use smaller weapons than human's use, and their lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of Medium-size characters.
Moogle base land speed is 20 feet.
Gliding (Ex): A moogle can use its wings to glide, negating damage from a fall of any height and allowing 15 feet of forward movement for every 5 feet of decent. Moogles glide at a speed of 30 feet (average maneuverability). Even if a moogle’s maneuverability improves, it can't hover while gliding. A moogle can't glide while carrying a medium or heavy load.
If a moogle becomes unconscious or helpless while in midair, its wings become limp. The moogle descends in a tight corkscrew and takes only 1d6 points of falling damage, no matter what the actual distance of the fall was.
Flight (Ex): When a moogle reaches 5 Hit Dice, it becomes able to fly at a speed of 30 feet (good maneuverability). A moogle can't fly while carrying a medium or heavy load or while fatigued or exhausted. Wearing medium or heavy armor reduces a moogle's maneuverability to average.
Moogles can safely fly for a number of rounds equal to their Constitution score (minimum 1 round). They can exert themselves to fly for up to twice as long, but then they're fatigued at the end of the flight. Moogles are likewise fatigued after spending a total of more than 5 minutes per day flying. Because moogles can glide before, after, and between rounds of actual flight, they can remain aloft for extended periods (even if they can only use flight for 1 round at a time without becoming fatigued).
A moogle with flight can use the run action while flying, provided it flies in a straight line.
Low-light Vision: Moogles can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
+2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and spell-like effects.
+2 racial bonus on Listen, Perform, and Diplomacy checks.
Automatic Languages: Common and Kupo. Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic).
Favored Class: Bard. A multiclass moogle's bard class does not count when determining whether he suffers an XP penalty for multiclassing (see Player's Handbook, Chapter 3: Classes, "Multiclass Characters," XP for Multiclass Characters).

I really like the moogles I've seen in this thread. They seem well thought out.

Anyone who's interested in Final Fantasy in D&D might consider checking this out:

Races, classes, prestige classes, feats, monsters, everything. An enormous project that I'm incredibly impressed with.

Favored class: Commoner

I would also add in that they have an extradimentional space that follows them around all the time that only they can access. Seems appropriate, since where else do they pull those save books from?

That supplement is very poor in the mechanics department. It looks pretty but the mechanics are down right horrible.
