| Stolide10-31-07, 05:12 PM | What do you think the most powerfull race is for its LA? |
| RobbyPants10-31-07, 05:19 PM | It depends on what you want. Humans are very versitle, and can be good at anything. Germilines are a rediculously powerful LA+0 race that makes a spectacular druid. Orcs are pretty good (at low levels at least) for barbarians and fighters as LA +0. Of course, with casters being over-all better, they fall behind with penalties to all of their mental stats! Goliaths are good for LA +1. Poison dusk lizard folk are LA +1 and are fully worth it. |
| Poison_Dusk10-31-07, 05:25 PM | Me. |
| Jaxgaret10-31-07, 06:37 PM | Whisper Gnome, some anthropomorphic animals from Savage Species, and Humans. |
| Khadmus10-31-07, 07:04 PM | Feral whatever? I'm not in the know about optimization, so I might not be the best source on this. But, as long as you're asking "most powerful", I figure kobold should be mentioned due to that famous creation of Khan the Destroyer. |
| Masakari448810-31-07, 07:13 PM | Whisper Gnome, some anthropomorphic animals from Savage Species, and Humans. Not to mention Whisper Gnome with the Dark Creature template for +1. Awesome for rogues. |
| Istesrillith10-31-07, 07:43 PM | Elans are always nice with their ability to use power points to not take damage and the feat that increases it to 4 points per PP used, with no LA. Cursts are very nice as well with their immunity to most damage (and everything else). |
| Jaxgaret10-31-07, 10:19 PM | Not to mention Whisper Gnome with the Dark Creature template for +1. Awesome for rogues. That is a nice combo. |
| Board_Rider10-31-07, 10:41 PM | Whisper Gnome. I like the Karsite too. |
| zook1shoe66610-31-07, 10:49 PM | #1- venable Dragonwrought Kobold makes the most uber spellcaster ever and a pretty good rogue/ninja/scout. +0 LA #2- Dvanti from the Dragon Compendium. two bodies, one mind!!!!! the most uber monk ever created!!! druids would be sooo powerful too with Wild Shape. +1 LA #3- Lesser Planetouched. great by "type". +0 LA #4- Tibbit. halfling that can turn into a housecat at will. +0 LA #5- Broodguard Dragonborn Mountain Dwarf makes an UBER Dragon Shaman. +0 LA. |
| Bahumut11-01-07, 09:43 AM | #4- Tibbit. halfling that can turn into a housecat at will. +0 LA i dont have access to the dragon compendium, and i cant find any other mention of the Tibbit online. what are the stats for tibbits? (if it is copyrighted/cant be posted, just yell at me for it. i dont mind) |
| Orchomenos11-01-07, 10:03 AM | Elans are always nice with their ability to use power points to not take damage and the feat that increases it to 4 points per PP used, with no LA. Cursts are very nice as well with their immunity to most damage (and everything else). I just played an Elan Psion. This ability is nice, but it's an headache to keep count of all these PP! :( I would say with an LA+6, Pixies are still great. Wings and Greater Invisibility always on are king. Yeah, there are some spells that can negate all that, but these are spells you wouldn't need to spend vs another type of creature! |
| RobbyPants11-01-07, 10:12 AM | I would say with an LA+6, Pixies are still great. Wings and Greater Invisibility always on are king. Yeah, there are some spells that can negate all that, but these are spells you wouldn't need to spend vs another type of creature! I thought they were LA +4, or are there RHD I'm not taking into account? Pixies can make great rogues, but they tend to suck at about everything else. |
| Orchomenos11-01-07, 10:38 AM | Hmm... you're right. LA+6 is with Irresistible Dance. They make AWESOME Rogues (and Ninja, and Scouts...). With their bonuses to mental stats, they can make decent spellcasters, despite the LA. But I admit, even with the DR 10/Cold Iron, they would make pitiful melee warriors! :nonono: |
| DwarfPcfan11-01-07, 01:30 PM | Depends on what you want, for pure versatility, you can't pass over human but if I were to make my picks for LA+0 and +1, I'd have to diivide them by class. Warriors: Human, dwarf, goliath, half-giant and duegar (please read their entry at +1 LA in the XPH and tell me they aren't very powerful) Spellcasters:Human, dwarf, gnome overall; grey elf, silvanesti (DL Campiagn setting) and tinker gnome (DL setting again) if intelligence based caster Skill monkey, rogue, scout: Human, stronghearth halfling, whisper gnome, poison dusk lizardfolk, duegar (invisbility for free and skill bonuses at +1 LA) Psionics: Human, blue goblin, duergar, dwarf, gnome Others: Human, dwarf, duegar Overrall best at all times: Human, dwarf, duegar |
| Sinfire Titan11-01-07, 01:59 PM | Warforged. Easily my favorite race. They make great Swordsages, Wizards, Artificers, Fighters, Soulknives, Incarnates, Dragonfire Adepts, Warlocks, Crusaders, Warblades, Knights, Factotums, and even Scouts. Other than that, Inspired from ECS. |
| Saiyamantis11-01-07, 04:42 PM | Githzerai are quite good for a +2 LA, and one of the few races I've seen do well as a monk or ninja. (The money saved on Bracers of Armor alone helps quite a bit.) |
| TheEndIsNear11-01-07, 05:13 PM | in what book is the "Germilines" thanks! D-End |
| zook1shoe66611-01-07, 06:33 PM | Jermlaines are a rediculously powerful LA+0 race that makes a spectacular druid. i dont ever remember seeing a LA listed for them... where did you find a source saying the LA? EDIT: nvm found it in the 3.5 update thing. i dont have access to the dragon compendium, and i cant find any other mention of the Tibbit online. what are the stats for tibbits? (if it is copyrighted/cant be posted, just yell at me for it. i dont mind) cant tell you what the stats, etc are.... basically a halfling that can turn into a housecat AT WILL!!! ;) |
| CrimsonDeath11-01-07, 06:46 PM | Half-Minotuar (Dragon Magazine, forgot which issue). +6 Str (or is it +8?), some +Con, Large size, nice natural armor, and a natural weapon, for +1 LA. Anthropomorphic Bat. +6 Wis, Small size, natural Fly speed, favored class Druid. +0 LA. I hear that Anthropomorphic Baleen Whale is pretty good for some of the same reasons as Half-Minotaur, but I forget the exact benefits and tradeoffs. |
| dragonseth11-01-07, 07:04 PM | Half-Minotuar (Dragon Magazine, forgot which issue). +6 Str (or is it +8?), some +Con, Large size, nice natural armor, and a natural weapon, for +1 LA. | Bahumut11-01-07, 11:55 PM | anthro-nimals have racial HD dependant on size. small have 1HD, medium have 2HD, and large have 3HD. so if your anthro is small, with no LA, then you get off scott free! haha :D |
| Tedronai11-02-07, 12:27 AM | An Unbodied with Flyby Attack will only ever get hit by a prepared action, and can disguise themselves as an invisible creature (specifically a will'o'wisp that happens to not be radiating light) to make that spot check a real pain in the arse Even at a total ECL of 8 (4 racial HD), I still consider them to be worthwhile since they also manifest as a Psion (Telepath) of 4th level, and stack any such class levels with that. As an added bonus, the race gives you access to another of my all-time favourite feats: Mindsight. |
| DM-Scott11-02-07, 12:55 AM | I'm a bit pressed to disagree when it comes to humans. While humans are probably the most widely played race in D&D, it's not because of power, to be sure. They are inferior to most races in a variety of common situations in a D&D game, but they are the easiest to customize for flavor. While humans get a bonus feat (1 bonus feat) and extra skill points as if their INT was +2 higher (4 at 1st, +1 each additional HD), those features are fairly easy to mimic or just outright ignore. Humans are completely summed up in "Bonus Feat, 4+level skill points, favored class: any". They lack low-light or dark-vision, skill bonuses, resistances, and pretty much anything. In fact, the truth of the matter is humans aren't really good at anything, but there's always something worse at everything (a human usually makes a better bard than an orc). Halflings, for example, look like this.. Small Size (this is actually a pro) +2 Dexterity (pro) +1 to attacks with thrown weapons & slings (pro) +1 to all saving throws (pro, nice one too) +2 to climb, jump, listen, and move silently (pro) +2 against fear effects (pro) Base speed 20 (con) Small Size (con, sort of) -2 Strength (con) Halflings while lacking in sight-enhancements such as low-light and dark-vision like humans get benefits which make them highly effective at several roles more-so than a human ever will. They are perfect for rogues (their favored class) and a smart player actually uses size to their advantage (its worse feature being the -4 to grapple checks). This grants them a +1 to their attacks and armor class, and a further +4 bonus to the hide skill (complementing their racial skill bonuses very well). Assuming ability scores of 10s and 11s across the board before racial mods, a halfling gets a +3 bonus with thrown weapons and slings (+1 size, +1 from dexterity bonus, +1 racial). If they are rogues, that amounts to about 1d3-1+1d6 damage (about as good as 1d6+1) with sneak attack. They also make excellent spell casters, as the size benefit helps with poor armor class, hitting with touch and ray spells, and even allowing a 1st level halfling wizard out-sneak a fair amount of stuff. A subrace of halflings gets the human's bonus feat for the +1 bonus to all saving throws. While with the Luck of Heroes feat (from the FRCS if I recall) can be taken by humans at 1st level for the +1 bonus to all saving throws, the halfling has far more going for it than humans. It's my opinion that humans actually need a little bit of improving. While on paper they look pretty decent ("Hey free feat, and I'm not skill-stupid!") they tend to lack in actual game-play ("Man, I need a torch. *strike* Yay, light! Urk!" he says as he is hit by kobold bolt from 80ft away in the dark as he's a beacon, and still can't see the kobolds), having issues with light effects, being weaker in combat, having no particularly good skills by default, and being vulnerable to everything (where many other races get at least a small save bonus against a few effects, and some against many - such as dwarves getting +2 against ALL spells and spell like abilities). So in closing, while the human isn't as bad as an orc-sorcerer would typically be, they're probably far, far away from the most powerful race. |
| Jaxgaret11-02-07, 01:09 AM | I hear that Anthropomorphic Baleen Whale is pretty good for some of the same reasons as Half-Minotaur, but I forget the exact benefits and tradeoffs. They make the absolute best Monks, and are good for pretty much any warrior build. They get sick benefits for their ECL. And since they're a non-caster boost, I see no reason to ban them or other melee-oriented anthropomorphic animals. |
| Jaxgaret11-02-07, 01:14 AM | I'm a bit pressed to disagree when it comes to humans... So in closing, while the human isn't as bad as an orc-sorcerer would typically be, they're probably far, far away from the most powerful race. The free bonus feat (that can be applied to anything) leads to optimization that other characters can only dream of, outside of the Strongheart Halfling. In many builds, Human is the optimal choice. |
| nonsi11-02-07, 11:47 AM | Stonechild (RoS), boys'n girls. Stonechild ! ! ! Not so much a classic "powerfull" race in numbers, but immunity to poison & acid + darkvision + 30' movement + stat boost .............. and no LA. I mean, what more can you ask for ?! |
| Legdiwena11-02-07, 12:22 PM | Centaur |
| larry_the_titan11-02-07, 12:52 PM | What is the Most powerful Race? Depends on what do you think power is? Since the most powerful character ever made was a Kobold you could say Kobolds are the most powerful Race but that is not true in most cases though. Each Class would probably benifit from a different races in different ways. Necropolitains and Warforged have loads of immunities at begining of the game which can make them powerful but is not always the case. Humans, Dwarves and Elves are powerful in Core but really they all have weaknesses or things they would be surpassed in. I like to think many of the Odd ball races I have played were powerful in one way or another. The list includes Goliaths, Catfolk, Killoren and Ect... Each had a benifit at the moment but indeed they weren't considered overpowering during the game. If you really want to know what is the most powerful for something give us a subject or otherwise the Answer will be Pun Pun the Kobold. |
| Jaxgaret11-02-07, 12:56 PM | Stonechild (RoS), boys'n girls. Stonechild ! ! ! [has] no LA. Completely wrong. They have two racial HD and a +4 LA, for a total starting ECL of 6. Where did you get that idea from? |
| nonsi11-02-07, 09:43 PM | Completely wrong. They have two racial HD and a +4 LA, for a total starting ECL of 6. Where did you get that idea from? RoS, page 94: STONECHILD MONSTER CLASS :lightbulb |

| Valerii11-02-07, 11:52 PM | What makes the Dragonwrought Kobold so powerful? You get some nice immunities and vision effects, but you start with no feats. |
| zook1shoe66611-02-07, 11:55 PM | What makes the Dragonwrought Kobold so powerful? You get some nice immunities and vision effects, but you start with no feats. a venerable Dragonwrought Kobold gets +3 Int, +3 Wis, +3 Cha without taking the penalties for being really OLD |
| Valerii11-02-07, 11:59 PM | a venerable Dragonwrought Kobold gets +3 Int, +3 Wis, +3 Cha without taking the penalties for being really OLD How does that work? I don't see anything in the feat that allows you to ignore the physical stat penalties for being old? |
| Jaxgaret11-03-07, 05:51 PM | How does that work? I don't see anything in the feat that allows you to ignore the physical stat penalties for being old? It does work. But a Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold isn't a race, per se - so it can't be considered as the "most powerful race". Same thing goes for templates. It would be a different thread, titled something like "most powerful pre-class levels build, for its LA". |
| archerpwr11-03-07, 06:05 PM | Any race without an int penalty or level adjustment |
| Valerii11-03-07, 09:18 PM | It does work. But a Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold isn't a race, per se - so it can't be considered as the "most powerful race". Same thing goes for templates. What makes the kobold not take it? |
| Jaxgaret11-03-07, 10:44 PM | The question is how? I thought all creatures get the penalties when aging. What makes the kobold not take it? You know, I'm not entirely sure. I've just read that it works in about a hundred different places, with no one saying that it didn't work. I am looking for the rule that states it, but I can't find it. |
| TaiSharShaidar11-03-07, 11:08 PM | It says in the description of the feat that a Dragonwrought Kobold ages like a dragon, dragons don’t get penalties for old age they get stronger. So as a venerable dradonwrough kobold you get the advantages of old age with out the disadvantages normally associated with it. |
| Everdreaming11-03-07, 11:35 PM | RoS, page 94: STONECHILD MONSTER CLASS :lightbulb The monster class does not let you ignore the LA or HD, just allows you to play a stonechild from level 1, but you dont gain all the benifits. |

| Uloquiorra11-04-07, 01:10 AM | Hi all, I've look on some posts and I've didn't found on which book is the Dark Creature Template (for Whisper gnome) and the Broodguard Dragonborn Mountain Dwarf Dragon Shaman (I've only found the Dragonborn but not the remains) and also could help about which race (and where can I found it!) I should get for a Jump Charger (Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker + Valorous Weapon, Rhino's Hide, Jump Ring w/ Leap Attack+Battle Jump+Shock Trooper(and the required feats to Frenzied Class)) Thanks in Advance:D |
| Vallentus11-04-07, 10:37 AM | Not familiar with pun pun are you? Click the link I dropped above. My bad. Didn't even noticed that you'd linked to the all-knowing Pun Pun. That's okay. He foresaw my mistake and retconned it just in time. ;) |
| Xiuhcoatl11-04-07, 11:25 AM | You know, I'm not entirely sure. I've just read that it works in about a hundred different places, with no one saying that it didn't work. There are two pieces of it that makes it so powerful: As a Dragonwrought Kobold, you do not get aging penalties. So you'd get the +3(?) to Int, Wis, and Cha without the -6(?) to Str, Dex, and Con. That's written right into the feat. What isn't written into the feat, but is granted by the RAW, is that by becoming a Dragon, a Kobold--which has age categories as a dragon does--becomes by definition a True Dragon (a creature with age categories and the dragon type). So they're a True Dragon without aging penalties, so what? True Dragons, when they reach the Old age category, qualify for Epic Feats. So a Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold, by the RAW, takes no aging penalties and can take Epic feats at level 1. |

| Xiuhcoatl11-04-07, 11:38 AM | one problem i see is.... they don't become "true" dragons..... only dragons Did you read my post? They become "true" dragons because the definition of "true dragon" is such: Any creature with 12 age categories is considered a 'true dragon'. |

| DM-Scott11-04-07, 02:01 PM | The free bonus feat (that can be applied to anything) leads to optimization that other characters can only dream of, outside of the Strongheart Halfling. In many builds, Human is the optimal choice. Like I said, they are played because they are easy to customize. By customize, I mean if you need a spare feat, they're a decent bet. The extra skill points let you do a bit more, and perhaps qualify for some stuff easier. But I still don't think this makes them one of the most powerful races, simply because to me (though perhaps not to others), I see power and strength in a race based on how they can handle a variety of situations, can excel in various situations, and so forth. For example, I see dwarves as very strong because they get +2 con / -2 cha, which makes them well suited to many different classes simply based on ability scores (making good fighters, and arguably better casters), as well as saving throw bonuses against a variety of problematic issues, such as spells (saves vs spells / spell like abilities, which also gives a bonus against psionics, shadow mysteries, and most things you'd make saving throws for), poisons (poison can suck as it can rob you of feats, spells, your entire combat, or your life - incidentally their con bonus helps too), attack and defense bonuses against certain enemies (a perk, though not very awesome), consider dwarven war-axes martial weapons, darkvision 60ft (very useful), gain some skill bonuses which can prove useful, stone-cunning (this ability is pretty awesome in a variety of situations - enemies disguised as stone, hidden traps, hidden doors, illusionary stonework, etc, etc, etc - plus the ability to know your exact depth could be useful in certain situations), stability (+4 against bull rush and trip, which is actually pretty awesome), and while their speed is 20ft which is slower than most medium creatures, it's always 20ft (meaning there's few drawbacks to wearing full armor, and it also allows them to tumble in medium and heavy armor). So the basic dwarf can bring a lot of options to bare. If he's in a dungeon or a cave in the dark, he can see, and he can find stuff easier (good for a rogue), he can take more damage (increased con), he can shrug off spells and poisons easier (good for anyone), he can't be easily tripped (eat this spiked-chain-fighter!), he wields a superior 1 handed weapon (assuming martial weapon proficiency - also makes a good dwarf cleric war domain weapon), he can appraise and craft stone and metal items better, gets bonuses when fighting anything with the orc / goblinoid / giant subtypes, and tumbling around in full plate can be spiffy (DC 15 tumble to avoid AoOs, so with ranks and magic items, that's easy to do in full plate). While the human is more customizable, the dwarf will have an advantage in very large variety of situations that can occur. If they are in the dark, the dwarf has an advantage, if they are fighting wolves (with their trip ability) the dwarf is at an advantage, if they are hit with poison the dwarf has the advantage (and if the poison targets ability scores, you may have just lost spellcasting power, or access to an entire line of feats such as the power attack line or combat expertise, or two weapon fighting), if they are hit with a spell, spell like ability, psionic power, or mystery (spell-like) the dwarf has the advantage, dwarf is better at tanking, gets better weapons, and is generally more well suited for a variety of things. Furthermore, as they gain levels the dwarf's weaknesses are going to become smaller (boots of striding and springing, or some other movement enhancing abilities), while the human's bonus feat is going to mean a bit less later on, and any benefits the human could get to his survivability (save bonuses for example) the dwarf can get and still be better. Now please note - I'm not bashing on the humans (I've played more of them than anything else I think). I'm also not saying dwarves are the god-race. I'm just saying my interpretation of how strong a race is comes in their ability to take advantage of their abilities. Peace out, Game on. |
| HCL11-04-07, 02:06 PM | gnome ftw |

| Valerii11-04-07, 05:46 PM | Thanks, guys. I have both books and I still didn't see it. I'll have to spend a few hours going through them properly. |

| Tema6911-05-07, 02:11 PM | Do you realise that a Venerable Kobold whatever-you-need-to-get-the-epic-feats would be able to choose feats such as Epic Toughness at level 1. That's +30 hp! |
| Legdiwena11-05-07, 02:17 PM | How can you be venerable at 1st level though? |
| Xiuhcoatl11-05-07, 05:00 PM | Do you realise that a Venerable Kobold whatever-you-need-to-get-the-epic-feats would be able to choose feats such as Epic Toughness at level 1. That's +30 hp! Yep! You don't meet the prerequisites for much, but +30hp is always nice as a fighter bonus feat if you're a kobold How can you be venerable at 1st level though? You tell your DM, "My character is venerable, ok?" |

Therefore, you play and old level 1 kobold dude. There are no age/level restrictions in the PHB as far as I'm concerned. |
| Legdiwena11-06-07, 11:45 AM | Won't you be pretty close to dying of old age though? |
| Xiuhcoatl11-06-07, 03:21 PM | Yes, but you can always take the epic feat Extended Lifespan (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#extendedLifeSpan) :P |
| war_thog11-07-07, 06:30 PM | Dragonborn are pretty powerful. They are the most ridiculously unbalanced thingy out there....... Their abilities don't even balance to whats in the Core, and get even more broken by other splatbooks. Take the Dragonborn human........ Gets dragonborn stuff, loses all human. Then dragonborn elf...... keeps stats, loses all elf stuff, equivalent to the human. Then dragonborn dwarf, stat change and dragonborn stuff, ok its balanced so far! Wait keep movement! But lose the dwarf special thing. So we have a guy who has exactly the same powers as above but has lower movement. Woot! Stay away from dwarves! *unless you want to pick an underpowered option* Then we have an OP option. You keep all modes of movement. Enter the raptoran. LA +0 gets all dragonborn + flight. So firebreathing and flight at LA +0. So much better than all other LA +0 things out there. Such a stupid race with no thought to balance at all...... *sigh* stupid wizards... |
| mathew9911-07-07, 06:45 PM | The foot race |
| Kuromaku11-07-07, 08:01 PM | if played right the half demon (3.0 version preferable) is greatly powerful. The spell like abilities and major ability bonuses plus skill points and resistances and immunities make them the most well balanced template to offset any base race's weakness. |
| Spikes01k11-07-07, 08:33 PM | I would have to say Dragon Born Gray Elf Make incredible wizards, can fly, get blind sense, or a breath weapon that can be used every 1D4 rounds. |
