My Half-Ogre Template [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, for starters... I know that there's already a Half-Ogre template.

Ahem. Well, now that that's out there, I'd like to point out how... dissatisfied I am with DR 313's Half-Ogre template. LA +1, and increases size? Not only that, but it increases size with all the appropriate changes to ability scores. As per the rules in MM (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#sizeIncreases), going from medium to large size give you +8 Str, among other things. Now, call me mad, but +14 Str, Large size, and plenty of other bonuses seems a bit... unbalanced to me.

So, I present to you, the Wizards Community, with my (admittedly simple- I based it in part off of Dragon Magazine's) redone Half-Ogre template.

Half-Ogre:

Type changes to Giant
+4 Str, -2 Int, -2 Cha
+1 Natural Armor
Powerful Build
Darkvision 60'

So, whadda ya think? :D
Keep in mind, I'm trying to keep this balanced for LA +1.

I'm assuming this was made for a few specific races (humans, orcs, etc.) right? Otherwise you're going to have all kinds of wacky complications. Like, there's on way a bug-bear that's half-ogre is gonna be able to qualify as medium sized, same goes for a half-ogre gnoll, or half-giant (XPH).

I'd consider something along the lines of a CON bonus too, ogres do get +4 CON.

IMO It's about LA +1 1/2, meaning more than LA +1, but less than LA +2.

Making the Half-ogre a giant type makes him immune to Charm Person, Hold Person, etc.

There's no way in hell that template is LA+2.

Even if they are immune to such spells, they're vulnerable to giant bane spells AND not eligible for spells like "Englarge person" or the like.

I'd give them something like Improved toughness as a bonus feat, that'd make it a solid LA+1 template.

It's not bad. It's very similar to a halfogre race I created (ie, not a template). About the only difference is my stats were +4 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Cha and no natural armor (at least I think there was a Dex penalty).

Anyway, it's a decent LA +1. As a template, this could be nasty put onto an orc (for a net +8 Str, -4 Int, -2 Wis, -4 Cha, all LA +1)!

Yes, well. Orcs are pretty broken as it is.

Orcs are kind of funny. They lack a lot of the abilities other races have, and they take a lot of penalties, but they do one thing, and they do it well. The only real problem with the race is they're shoehorned into one basic role, and the best at it (generally speaking).

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I don't want too many ability mods, but I might or might not add a Con bonus (and maybe a Dex penalty to go along with it.)

As for Orcs, well, anything with a Str bonus is an angry when you add Orc to the mix. I shudder to think of that one Lolth Touched Water Orc out there with +10 Str, +8 Con, and a +1 LA...

I think this template is fine. A Con bonus would be a bit too much. The only thing I'd add is that this is an inherited template that can be added to any small or medium-sized humanoid, monstrous humanoid, or giant.
