| Sliver_Slave02-01-08, 04:33 PM | My first race was just not worth it, so here's another go at something different. The Lim The Lim are statistically the same as humans, except that they have -2 to charisma score, (for reasons that will be apparent), and +2 to wisdom score (which may seem a bit arbitrary). Lim typically look like humans, though are often shorter and rounder. They exist at three parts of the mood spectrum: calm and contemplative, euphoric and happy and sad and depressed. Lim are prone to mood swings, changing without any warning. Lim are often unreliable. They speak common and one other language. Lim settlements are almost non-existent, as they prefer to live among halflings and humans. Lim are always chaotic, and sway towards good or neutral. Lim most often become bards, rogues or druids. any tips? |
| fenderbassman200902-01-08, 04:55 PM | a lot more information. background and racial triats. pick up a races supplement (stone, destiny, wild etc) and take one of the chapters in there of a new race like raptorans or illumians or goliaths and basically take each section, and customize it to this race. its a good start but for a PC, gamers are gunna look for a lot more twists and turns and abilities to persuade them into using it. excellent start, though. |
| Bobfred2102-02-08, 05:28 PM | :/ I don't really see the need for this kind of race. The flavor isn't really all that unique and let's face it, they're just humans that are better druids, clerics and monks. Even as a fighter I'd take this race over human because of the +1 to will saves and the penalty to a stat that has no relevance to my character (outside of roleplaying, which if I'm taking this race means I have a role playing excuse to have a low charisma). Personally, I don't like it, but if your set on it differentiate it from human a bit. At the very least remove the bonus feat. |
| Sliver_Slave02-02-08, 05:31 PM | I really wanted it to be for role playing, and I'm not hardcore enough to write a stat block. EDIT: oopsie doo. I should remove the bonus feat, extra skill points and stuff. |
| Neutronium_Dragon02-02-08, 07:48 PM | Unless there's something more to it than what you have, there's really no reason for there to be a separate stat block when the only difference is ability score modifiers; that's not enough of a difference to justify one. You'd be better off with a 1st level racial feat to reflect what you're trying to accomplish. Otherwise you're going to need to go into something more involved than just attaching stat modifiers to a human stat block. |
| Crimson_Concerto02-03-08, 01:47 AM | I don't see what's different from this in a human that lives in a particular culture and put 12 into WIS and 8 into CHA... You really need to make them very different physiologically culturally for it to be a different race... |
| Fly666monkey02-03-08, 04:26 PM | This is a rip off of my Lilith race! SHAME ON YOU! |
| Sliver_Slave02-05-08, 07:37 PM | This is a rip off of my Lilith race! SHAME ON YOU! I have not seen your lilith race. I mostly lurk on the D&D boards. |
| M-bark02-06-08, 06:16 AM | You could take any custom race and call it a rip off or [insert canon race here] with a bit of [insert canon race here]. Any of 'em. Also, if that Lilith race was so much like this one, you deserve to be smacked for unoriginality (both stats-, fluff- and name-wise). No matter if this one came later. That being said, stat-wise, they [I]could be okay, except that you just take a human and make them slightly more alert and less pleasant to be around. Now if you would just add a few more features (make it more custom-ish by taking away the human bonus feat and skill points and giving them +2 Int and Low-Light Vision, perhaps), then it would be starting to flesh out nicely. Just starting though. The humans, I think, are the worst race to compare your custom race with. The others are better. When comparing, include at least one LA +0 race, one LA+1 and one LA+2. If yours seems much weaker than the LA+2, compare it to more LA +0s or LA +1s. If it seems much stronger than an LA +1 race, compare it to races with an LA higher than 2. Changing a little bit about an already existing race (like elves who require sleep and are not immune to magic sleep effects, or Gnomes without the stonecutting ability and only 'speak with animals' as a spell-like ability) doesn't make it a custom race. Usually, the custom-ness comes from thinking about a race first in terms of culture and such. Fluff first, stats later. There is a "Beginners Guide to Racebuilding" thread in this board. It's on the second or third page at current, I believe. |
| Orchomenos02-06-08, 07:54 AM | Lim are prone to mood swings, changing without any warning. Lim are often unreliable. IMHO, being prone to mood swings shouldn't give a bonus to Wisdom, it should even give a it malus. Would you recognize a threat if you're euphoric? Would you pay attention to your surrounding if you're in deep contemplation? You could say they're a human subrace, akin to "gypsies". They could have some bonus to Handle Animal, Survival, Sleight of Hand and Escape Artist. And for this kind of nomads, I would add a special ability called Jabbering: After listening to a foreign language for 1 minute, a Lim can understand and speak enough of this language to communicate with natives, but with a -2 penalty to Charisma-based skills as well as Sense Motive. This ability is lost after 3 days of not jabbering this language. These maluses do not apply on languages the Lim knows correctly. |
