| 041391klr07-01-07, 10:22 PM | Ok so Im DMing a new game, and I figured Id make a nice iconic race for my world, Like Warforged are to Eberron. Anyway so this is a quick description, and their stats. The Nameless (No name yet :P ) Before you stands a humanoid figure of average height. His most prominent feature is two cloak like cloths hanging from his shoulders, where a humans arms would be. Suddenly, the cloaks jump to life, quickly twisting themselves, excluding the tattered ends of the cloaks, which now operate like fingers. The figure reaches out one of his makeshift arms. "Pleased to meat you" The Nameless began with a monastary dedicated to evil ideals. The monks of this monastary would go on raids of nearby towns, and capture the most beautiful women, then retreat back to the mountains before any of the villagers could fight back. After they arrived at the monastary, the monks would sacrifice the women to the God of Fist, Manaistreph, who they believed fed them the power of Ki. When the townspeople appealed to Pelor, he heeded their call, and removed the one thing that that gave the monks power, their arms. The villagers, took this oppurtunity, and destroyed the monastary, only sparing those who swore their allegiance to pelor. Months passed and the nameless, no longer evil, wanted to find a way to regain their abililities only their arms could achieve, so thus, they began searching the world for anyone who could help them achieve this. They found this person a week out of the village. He was an old man, who was clothed in the most royal looking clothing they had seen, it almost glew in the night. It was this man who grafted cloth arms on The nameless. Now, the nameless have slowly been spreading throughout the world, creating small societies of their race, and melding into human society. ~-2 Str, +2 Dex The nameless are very quick and agile with their actions, but their makeshift arms make them less brawny then other races. ~Cloak Arms- Because the nameless dont have arms or hands that keep a constant shape, wearing rings, gloves and braces is more of a nuisance than a benefit for them. They instead can get a maximum of four runes stitched into their arms, which have various magical abilities. A nameless may switch their arms between "Unfolded", where they just hang by their sides, and benefit from a few extra abilities(See below), or may use a standard action to twist their arms to manipulate objects. The arms incur no further penalties. ~Slow falling - While the Nameless' arms are "Unfolded" , they may reduce the damage they take from falling by 10 feet, this effect is not activated if they are bound, or unable to move. ~Improved Grapple - The Nameless gain the feat of the same name while their arms are "Unfolded" ~Constrict - A Nameless who's arms are Folded can constrict and opponent dealing 1d4 damage plus 1½ times its Strength bonus with a successful grapple check against a creature up to one size larger than itself. ~Blind - A Nameless can use its Unfolded arms to grapple an opponent up to three sizes larger than itself. The object makes a normal grapple check. If it wins, it wraps itself around the opponent’s head, causing that creature to be blinded until removed. ~Cloak flail - While the Nameless' arms are unfolded, they may use a standard action to flail their "Arms" and thus making it harder to hit them, giving them a +2 Dodge (?) bonus to AC ~Deflect Arrows - While a Nameless' arms are folded, they may activate this feat. Activating it is a standard action, and lasts until the beginning of their next turn. Favored Class = Monk |
| baby_kamikaize_kobold07-01-07, 10:50 PM | It seems very interesting and very balanced. I assume that they are supposed to be rogues? also a few more benifits might be nice. but, otherwise nice job :) |
| 041391klr07-01-07, 11:16 PM | Not necessarily made for just rogues, but it would be cool to explain that as one of them sneaks up behind you.. "You hear a flutter of what sounds like some sorta of cloak rustling in the wind, and before you can turn around, two large almost clawed cloth hands are at your throat." Knowing the people I play with, one of them would Scream "TEDDY BEAR ATTACK!" |
| xephnin07-02-07, 12:31 AM | interesting race concept. though i do have a question about the arms... how dense are they? if someone got a hold of one of their arms could he/she simply tear it with ease from the torso or cut it them off easily with a blade? if this does happen, do they just go buy more cloth at a near by market and somehow sew or magically attach it back to the torso? |
| 041391klr07-02-07, 11:53 AM | Ok, well depending on which form the arms are in, they can either be as dense as human arms, or as weak as animated cloth, which they are. While they are passive, they are as weak as any other silklike cloth. While they are twisted, however, they become more resiliant, and become as dense as normal human arms. So thus, anything that would sever a human arm would cut through an active cloth arms, and slice throug ha passice one like butter. There, of course are ways around this, including using one of the runes that can be sewn into the arm to give them more resistant to blows on their arms in the form of an armor bonus. As for when they are severed, no you can't just go get cloth from the local tailor and sew it up. Instead, their are special tailors in their civilizations that sew back on the arms magically, so that the given Nameless doesnt suffer any ill effects. These are the same people who sew in the runes that give bonuses, and thus, are not very cheap. Hope that answers all your questions. |
| YabaTheWhat07-02-07, 01:34 PM | Nice concept, but it could use a bit of refinement. Considering that they get no other significant benefits, and that they can only use the one benefit they receive while not holding objects, it seems a bit weak. Keep in mind that the raptoran gets gliding and feather fall abilities, the latter of which remains (mostly) active even while they are immobilized or unconscious, as well as several other minor benefits. One option is to make the cloth more versatile. In theory, they could use their cloth arms like a net to grapple opponents, or stretch it to gain reach (though doing so would need to incur penalties, unless it was limited to trip attempts), or flair it out like a parachute (feather fall). |
| happyalldaylong07-02-07, 01:55 PM | I think they lack a bit of fluff... (Ì`ve soo been there) so im gonna ask you the same questions i was asked: how are they born/made? where do they live? whats their history? whos their master? etc. otherwise: LOVE the consept. really great you know. |
| 041391klr07-02-07, 03:32 PM | Ok so first, more possible buffs.... How about at first level they get to choose one of the runes to be sewn onto their arms? They can range from the +1 Armor bonus mentioned before, to spell that they can use once per day...Any ideas for this would be appreciated.. The slow fall ability is supposed to be when their arms flare out like parachutes, thus why they cant use them when held or such. A plus to grapples would be good in both forms... having no joints in their arms must have some benefits.. so what would be a balanced + to grapple andyway? As for the history, I'll give you a quick writeup. The Nameless began with a monastary dedicated to evil ideals. Well, that all I got for now hope ya like it :D |
| happyalldaylong07-02-07, 04:48 PM | +4 when arms are... umm.. "unfolded", should do it. well... thats a good idea with those. what do you say? should i go make some? and another idea but... can they fight with the arms unfolded? the history is great. but one more thing: what is their purpose? why are they here? otherwise, this history is great! It would be nice if you checked in on my "shadow army (need help!)". see if you can give me some tips |
| 041391klr07-02-07, 06:06 PM | They can fight with their arms Unfolded, but they would do little more than annoy the enemy... maybe be able to blind them... they also be pretty good grapplers I suppose... Well I think their purpose is to basically fit in with society and not to be looked down on.. The ever continuing search for acceptance I suppose |
| happyalldaylong07-03-07, 07:21 AM | Maybe you could give them, say +2 ac when fighting with arms unfolded. since they are confusing their enemy. That Blinding thing would also work, so they would have benefits when fighting unfolded. even if they could not damage them. Rune of divine protection: +1 ac Rune of elemental protection: 5 recistanse to frost, shock OR fire Rune of skills: Permanent +2 in selected skill Rune of offence: +1 melee damage Rune of the sharp eye: +1 on hit with ranged Rune of missiles: magic missiles* once per day Rune of the giant:Enlarge person on self. once per day Rune of alertness:Alertness as bonus feat Rune of levetation:Levitate 3/day Here are some Runes you could use. if you want to of cuorse. *you can use about every 1st spell you want |
| 041391klr07-03-07, 07:34 AM | Awesome runes... I agree with the AC as long as its not overpowered, it is only when they are unfolded after all. The only problem I see is that if the character took the +AC rune, theyd net 4 AC while unfolded... a pretty hefty bonus. Anyway, we gotta get some more opinions on how this race would be if we added the runes / AC, Im just the creative person, I come here for the technical stuff :P |
| happyalldaylong07-03-07, 07:43 AM | Oh, then we need to get help from the allmighty LA CALCULATOR:bow: OR just someone good at seing what LA they are:P (not me:P) but when unfolded. all you can do is grapple and blind. so that makes up for it, don`t you think? |
| 041391klr07-03-07, 07:47 AM | it should, but Im definitely not an almighty LA Wizard |
| YabaTheWhat07-03-07, 09:09 AM | Oh, then we need to get help from the allmighty LA CALCULATOR:bow: You'd better not mean Soldarin's POS calculator. Granting free runes is a bad idea. Like the warforged armor feats, it's basically awarding a lump-sum benefit at 1st level that they shouldn't receive until a few levels later, then preventing them from changing the benefit at higher levels when they could have something better. Figure out benefits appropriate to the cloth itself, and save the runes for their proper purpose: replacing magic item slots. |
| 041391klr07-03-07, 03:13 PM | Yea... I was sorta losing sight of the idea of the runes replacing magic items.... anyway, I like the idea of the different cloths, but it seems like we should get the bonuses of the race in stone, and maybe they can switch the cloth just like they can get runes, but again, it costs an arm and a leg to do so... .rereading now you might not have meant that they an choose different cloths.... anyway more feedback would be great... I'm gonna put the bonuses for having their arms unfolded up in the first post A Couple quick questions now that Ive edited the original post. Is giving them the whole Improved Grapple feat overpowered? Also, what kind of bonus should the Arm flail AC be? |
| Sylvaroth07-04-07, 12:26 PM | Blind (Ex):A sheetlike animated object such as a carpet or tapestry can grapple an opponent up to three sizes larger than itself. The object makes a normal grapple check. If it wins, it wraps itself around the opponent’s head, causing that creature to be blinded until removed. Constrict (Ex):A flexible animated object such as a rope, vine, or rug deals damage equal to its slam damage value plus 1½ times its Strength bonus with a successful grapple check against a creature up to one size larger than itself. I suggest to give the first ability when the arms are 'unfolded', i.e. Large weapons (+4 bonus on grapple checks, can blind up to Gargantuan creatures; see Medium-Size animated objects (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/animatedObject.htm)), while the second ability can be used when the arms are 'folded', i.e. they are Small weapons (deals 1d4 points of damage; see Small animated objects (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/animatedObject.htm)). Dragon #301 featured the dueling cloak, which could either provide a +1 bonus to AC (effectively being a buckler for all purposes) or enabled the user to blind an opponent (see above). Deflect Arrows seems like a feat you would be able to pull off naturally, if you whirled about your cloak arms. Magic items worn on the below magic item body slots can be replaced with Spell Stitches with similar abilities: Magic Item Slots: (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#magicItemsOnTheBody) One pair of bracers or bracelets on the arms or wrists One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands One ring on each hand (or two rings on one hand) A nameless can have four Spell Stitches active at a time. As for the embroideries as a replacement for magic items usually worn on fingers, hands, or arms: As a rule of thumb, it takes two move actions to switch around items that you wear -- one to shed a functioning item and put it away, and one to get out the replacement item and put it on. That assumes that you keep the replacement item in some handy location, such as a belt pouch, and that you store the original item somewhere equally handy. Note that you can just drop an item as a free action, but that's for things you hold in your hand. Most items you wear are made to stay in place once you don them and it takes a little fiddling to get them off. I suggest to replace the items with embroideries stitched with magically enhanced threads ornamented with pearls, gems, bones, etc. but keeping the costs. A nameless can activate or deactivate a Spell Stitch as a move action (unfolding its pattern or hiding it in its folds). |
| ragoftag07-05-07, 07:26 PM | Interesting! They would seem to fit into a game that features Living Spells, wild magic, freak magical accidents, etc. Could have some intriguing feats... I just got a Kibitz-addition: Ragmen! Perhaps formed of shrouds from tombs? Serious Necro vibes? |
| 041391klr07-06-07, 08:57 PM | Ok so I put in the new abilities.... dunno how this is gonna be judged in LA though, they seem like they would be awesome grappler monks anyway, more input is greatly appreciated... |
| toadmp507-08-07, 06:45 PM | bump :bump: |
| Roam707-08-07, 07:29 PM | Perhaps make a Sew Rune feat, which would work like any other item creation feat. And a I'm assuming the favored class is monk? |
| 041391klr07-09-07, 09:09 AM | Something like this? Sew Rune [Item Creation] Prerequisite Caster level 3rd. Benefit You can sew runes onto a Nameless' Cloak arms, or onto normal Clothes if the rune specifies this is possible. Sewing a rune takes one day for each 1,000 gp in its price. To Sew a rune you must spend 1/25 of the item’s price in XP and use up raw materials costing half of this price. You can also mend a Nameless' Arms after they have been damaged, or completely removed. Doing so costs a quarter of the price it would take to sew the runes into the Nameless' arms in the first place. Nameless without any runes on their arms can repair their arms for 150g. And Yes, as it stands right now, their favored class is monk. Still, any help is appreciated, it would be nice to know what a fair LA for these guys is with their current abilities. |
| DarkSamuraiKyo07-09-07, 01:04 PM | I was reading your race and thought this might help with some more cool abilities and effects.....(be warn this information comes from Wikipedia about the show Ben Ten) Benmummy's species and planet have not yet been made known. He is a mummy-like alien composed almost entirely of a bandage-like material (akin to the linen used on real mummies). Aliens of this species can stretch their bandages to great lengths and control them even when separated from its main body. This setup also allows them to reshape their bodies at will, splitting themselves apart to dodge attacks and reforming to counter-attack. However, the material that makes up a mummy's body is relatively weak, allowing it to be torn fairly easily by strong enough beings or other equivalent forces. To compensate for its relatively weak form, a mummy can recover from basically any injury, including being torn to shreds, almost instantly and with no visible repercussions. Benmummy's bandages make him extremely light, allowing him to be thrown by beings with human strength or blown away by strong enough winds, Despite his build, however, Benmummy is incredibly strong, and can throw Diamondhead (A guy made of rock andwieghs a ton I think) with little effort His composition also allows it to survive in a vacuum hope this helps because this race is cool and would be cooler with some of these abilities |
| 041391klr07-10-07, 04:55 PM | Well, the only problem i see with giving them any more abilities right now is that I'm not exactly sure what their LA is as is posted. Thanks for the ideas though, once I get a good idea of how week or powerful it is, Ill look them over again, and maybe turn it over to game terms. |
| Prime3207-10-07, 06:12 PM | Benmummy? I knew this race reminded me of something! |
| 041391klr07-11-07, 05:58 PM | Despite some simililarities, I have never seen Ben ten, and needed something to shamelessly bump this thread with... |
| 041391klr07-13-07, 03:47 PM | Bump.... Could someone at least help me tack an LA on it? |
| Prime3207-13-07, 04:31 PM | Huh? YabaTheWhat has posted in this thread twice and you don't have an LA yet? :nonono: |
| 041391klr07-13-07, 04:54 PM | well... when he posted it didnt have all the new abilities... havent seen him for a while though.. |
