One build I've been looking at recently is something like Rogue2/Cleric3/Black Flame Zealot 10/ Assassin 5.

It gives you healing, back up buffs, GREAT death attack saves, and both divine and arcane spellcasting. Not to mention the great BLZ fluff of soul destruction.

Probably want a human or a halfling of some sort here.

Imo whats great about the assassin imo is his great skill and spell selection (3/4th lvl swift spells rock) especially if you combine with ring of wizardry. And him keepin up with uncanny dodge and full sneak attack progression.

Imo, skip the +ecl races and go for stongheart halfling or human

That halfling is sweet, u get +4 hide +2 dex +1 hit and a bonus feat.

Doppelganger, nothing breaks a dying soul worse than seeing his most trusted friend/spouse/lover/sibling stabbing him!

Et tu, Brute?

I usually like going for a hit and run assassin.
Take a look at some templates Shadow-Walker/Dark/Shade to add +56 to coolness.

My favourite builds are with basically with rouge/Assassin/Telfammar?-Shadowlord
Usually they also involve 2 levels of fighter for the feat requirements, but the Shadowlord is worth it in my opinion.

Race: Whisper Gnome for the abuse :)
Honestly what more could you want for? A alter self ring with 1 use/day is not that expensive if you really want it.

Changelings from the MMIII are a +0 LA race that are perfect. Disguise self at will, and a few minor goodies make for a perfect assassin.

well, for goofiness, a bugbear makes great crunch and fluff.

they have a racial bonus to move silently.(really, what went on in second edition that warrented that rules addition?) as well, they just seem kinda goofy.
An issue of dungeon made a two weapon fighting rogue with a pair of maces called "grunk two-thuds". I nearly fell over laughing in a store reading that one.

Other races I might crunch are tieflings(all outsiders have martial weapon proficiency(all)), as well as the changelings. If you go changeling as well, make sure you look at the Races of Ebberon substitution levels. Specifically, they get skill mastrey bluff...cmon, feint in combat! Make them SEE it coming, while looking like their best friends, and then drive a sword into their chests.

Good point, much more practical than my doppelganger idea.

Goblins and Kobolds are not bad, unless you need to have your assassin be a respectable citizen during the day and a dread assassin during the night. But at 9th level, with the proper skill/spell/equipment, they could live in the middle of a city and none would suspect a "monstrous race" is living there.

Don't forget that the ninja's Sudden Strike is equivalent to Sneak Attack in order to qualify for PrC. Your assassin could use Ghost Step to vanish just after he used his Death Attack, weather successful or not. Ghost Step is just one round, not long enough to prepare another Death Attack, but just enough to drink a Potion of Invisibility...

Kenku, definately kenku. I don't have the info on hand, but i'm fairly certain they gain a bonus to Dex.

Halfling Ninja/Assasin.

Halflings. Here's why.
Positive: With their +2 Dex and Small size, they already get a +2 to AC, halflings gain a +1 with thrown weapons and slings, which means if you attack with a thrown weapon this is increased to +2 because of the +1 attack bonus from the halflings size. They also gain a bonus to hide checks thanks to their small size.

Negative: The only real disadvantage is the halfling's small size, it means they deal less damage with weapons, but this can be countered by the Sneak Attack Damage bonus, and they are slow.
