I have been toying with the idea of playing an awakened squirrel ever since I bought an old Dragon magazine from the AD&D days a few months ago. The issue featured a race of intelligent squirrels which aided elves in their forests. They were dressed in Robinhood style archer's clothes, and carried around tiny bows, which was actually quite adorable. :)

Now I want to start writing up a character in case one of my DMs allows me to use it, but I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me with:

1) Are there any official stats for Squirrels? So far I've checked my Monster Manual, but there weren't any there.

2) Can Squirrels walk on two legs? If so, can they do it for an indefinite amount of time? I've seen pictures of them standing on two legs while they hold and eat things (see picture #2), and I've seen pictures of them standing while up reaching for things (see picture #1), but I don't know how well, or how long, they can do this.

3) Do their hands work like ours? Based on these two images, and some pictures a nurse at my local vet showed me of her pet squirrel riding a tiny bicycle, it seems to me they can manipulate objects a lot like we can. Then again, I don't know a thing about animal anatomy, so I could be wrong.

4) Would a squirrel count as a tiny humanoid? I know they are animals, but they seem to fit the humanoid shape when they aren't on all fours.

5) Would a squirrel make a good Rogue? They can't carry much, but I figure they would be near impossible to detect, and who would suspect an innocent little squirrel who's sitting by their window?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

on all but 5, i'd say no, but you can just use the stats for a similarely sized animal and awaken it.
They could make good rouges using poisons, but the 1 damage its attacks would do is basically useless.
Have fun

The kercpa, eh? Yeah, they were very cute. Why not adapt them to 3.5 and run of of them, instead of an awakened squirrel. All the coolness, few of the drawbacks.

Yup, that's them. Dragon issue #214 I believe.

Sadly I never played AD&A, so I don't know how to transfer them to 3.5. Either way, I'd like to use more official rules for my character, so my DMs won't give me as much of a hard time about it.

I'm guessing a psion would be the best (or only) route for this character.

Dracomortis churns out monsters, but his creations are not always monstous (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9790093).
Not that I can recall, although take the swim speed away from a rat and you are essentially set.
No.
A little bit. Once awakened, item manipulation is justifiable.
No. They cannot walk/run unless they are on all fours.
Not the worst option, but you can do better: be a warlock or a psion instead.

1) (TV Quote) "Squirrels are just rats with good PR." Use rat stats. Squirrels can swim so no big deal but you could remove it. Just add bushy tail to the flavor text.

2) You don't want them to. . .quadropeds have increased resistance to being Tripped or Bull Rushed and have increased carrying capacity, all good for a small thief.

3) No, but they have longer (comparitively) thumds so they can cup things in both hands or get an okay grip with one. Give your character the Gloves of Hands or whatever item from Savage Species. Basically that gives opposable thumbs and the ability to wield weapons in exchange for the "hands" magic item slot.

4) No. Sorry. That said, Charm Person, Hold Person and Dominate Person won't work since they are a Magical Beast (Augmented Animal) and the monster version is needed which means a higher level caster is required to use them on the character.

5) Um, yes. . .bonus to Dex, Size bonus to AC, bonus to Hide and Move Silently, Climb speed, "Welcome to my house little squirrel, I can't hit you with a sword to save my soul even if I manage to see and reach you. . ." You need the following feats: Agile Athlete, use Dex not Str on Climb, Swim, Jump, etc. and Weapon Finesse, no duh. A Bag of Holding will fix all your Carrying Capacity problems and you can hide inside with a bottle of air and still have a lot of extra space. . .

Downside Awaken means 3d6 Int not 4d6 discard the lowest. . .oh well. . .

Thanks ewancummins. I'll print this out and keep it with my awakened character to show my DMs when/if the time comes. If they say no to one they might still approve the other.

Thank you all for all the help so far.

1) I'll base him off the rat's stats, and I'll ask my DM(s) when the time comes if they want me to keep the swim speed. This really made things easy for me.

2) I see. However, if he is a quadruped what would I have to do to give him the ability to become semi-bipedal when he wants/needs to do things like pick up an item and put it into his Bag of Holding, sort through his Bag of Holding, or draw his little bow and take a shot?

3) I'll see what my DM rules at the time I play this character. I'll try to get him to rule in favor of letting his hands work like human hands, but if he doesn't I'll look into getting a pair of those gloves Mai_ariti mentioned. The only down side is that they are about 30K if I remember correctly, so I wouldn't be able to buy them until a much higher level.

4) You have a very good point about him not being affected by some spells Mai_ariti. However, would any of those Animal Empathy type Druid and Ranger animal controlling abilities work on me?

5) Where are you getting the bonus to Dex from Mai_ariti? Based on Table 7-1: Creature Sizes (MM pg. 314) it seems that I only get a bonus to my AC and Hide modifiers.

According to the rat's entry in the MM I can already use my Dex instead of my Str for climb checks, so getting the Agile Athlete feat might not be worth it.

Oh, and If a Bag of Holding could be scaled down for a tiny character how much could it hold, how much would it cost, and how large of an item could he fit in it? If I can only fit something the size of a GP through it's opening, would it even be worth buying?

Wild Empathy only works on Magical Beasts if their Int is 1 or 2 you have a min of 3 with Awaken, sorry Druids.

We (my games) use rules stating that smaller PC, are more likely to have a high Dex and if you are generating a character to be a squirrel not having him Awaken-ed in-game, you can roll stats and I would give a Dex bonus and a Str penalty. Alternatively your DM may be a jerk and force you to use standard Squirrel (rat) stats. Likewise we figgure light things are better at moving silently (reflected as a bonus on checks). This is a good argument to pitch to your DM.

I see no reason that the inside of a Bag of Holding would change size when the bag resizes, after all, it doesn't correspond to the size of the bag anyway. . .that said, try not to bring this up to your DM, they are universally EVIL (see my signature).

Since the bag re-sizes when you pick it up, it would probably get big again when you drop it, you can always hope. If not, invest in a lot of Portable Holes. And they work as traps too!

Thanks for the tips.

I like using the Savage Species C. Randomly Generate Ability Scores from Scratch method (pg. 6) for rolling up awakened characters. Since the awaken spell gives you more than a 5 for Int, and potentially more than a 5 for Cha I believe that it allows you to roll these stats normally. The rat's Str stat in the MM is a 2, so I have to leave it as is, so I'm hoping that this will balance things out (I'll pass it by my DM(s)).

However, a rat's Cha is only a 2, which will only gives me a potential maximum 5 for this stat (2 + 1d3 for awaken), so I might need to leave this one as is. I figure that squirrels aren't really rats, so they might have a slightly higher Cha, due to being so damn cute. After researching them a bit online I've learned that they regularly manage to charm free food from people in urban areas, something a rat could never do, so I might be able to get the DM to let the Cha slide.

Rats have a Climb speed. 15 ft I think do you recomend rising it to 20? That's pretty fast for a climb.

Remember that Tiny melee creatures are extremely difficult to play (tiny casters, on the other hand, are broken). You have to enter a creature's square to attack it, provoking an AoO (and making it difficult to set up flanking, to say the least). Your damage is for crap, so yeah, you're going to want poison; I suggest crafting your own, that stuff can get expensive fast. You're going to want Dodge, Mobility and Spring Attack to help with those AoO issues, and invest early and often in freedom of movement effects, because grappling will be completely fatal to you.

Honestly, if it were me, I'd ask the DM if I could play an awakened dire squirrel, bump the size category up to Small (remember, terriers are Small, so you're still pretty damn little, and only a hair less adorable). Your playability will increase tenfold. If you're all about the tiny, though, just remember AC, AC, AC and more AC, and as much of it as possible should apply against touch attacks (to avoid that murderous grapple).

If you can talk the rest of your group into making little rodent characters, most of the problems go away. Just set the squirrel size to standard, call them medium, have a reach of 6in instead of 5ft, and fight legendary monsters like badgers(those things are nasty, I have seen one chase off several foxes without much trouble). Its actually pretty fun. Otherwise, try to be small sized. You could still sneak attack occasionally with a ranged weapon though if you decide to be tiny, and you can get a nice AC.

EDIT:Also if you talk the rest of your group into making characters, its pretty fun to set the ferrets(I know, not a rodent, but the right size) rabbits, mice, shrews, voles, rats, and muskrats against the gecko, iguana, chameleon, rattle snake, viper, tarantula, and other lizards and bugs. Then there are the various birds, some of which(Like hawks and eagles) pose a serious threat.

Well, I am actually making two versions of this character right now. One is going to be a Psion, and the other a Rogue.

For the Rogue, I was thinking of making him more of a stealthy sneaky type character, who could do things like sneaking into an enemy fortresses undetected to let the party in, gather information without being noticed, or stealthily steal items without being caught, so I didn't really care much about damage. I planned to give him an enchanted ranged bow for close up sneak attacks and ice damage in case he is able to successfully sneak up on his enemies, while remaining undetected during a battle. However, unless I can find a new party who is more into the roleplaying part of the game I am pretty sure this type of character would only hurt and annoy my current groups, due to his lack of damage.

I was planning to make the Psion version (his brother/cousin?) a sniper type killer, who could focus on ranged powers, which won't reveal his location. Then again, this character would probably be a little broken. I am still playing a cat psion in a third on-and-off party I play with, and I am starting to think that he might be a bit unfair to play. The group does love him for all the laughs he brings, though. It took our wizard over three months of roleplaying to finally catch me red-handed and prove that I was intelligent. :D

That is a pretty awesome idea. I would so do it, but sadly neither of my two groups would be into such a thing. They would probably call it "childish" or "kid's stuff". That might be true, but it doesn't mean it isn't fun.

This also reminds me of my favorite childhood book. Have you read Redwall by any chance?

If you're going to play a sniper character as a Psion, ask your DM about re-issuing the Spellwarp Sniper PrC as a Psionic PrC. That would make Mr. Sqirrel a lot stronger, not that Tiny Psions aren't already pretty awesome.

Yes, I have read redwall. And as for kid stuff, a quote from one of my groups games like this: "The badger tears the two squirrels limb to limb, blood splattering on the ground as horrible screams of agony come from the squirrels. One of them is still alive, though barely, and the badger rips of its arm, with a horrible crack of bone, as the squirrel screams again then drops dead on the ground, blood forming a macabre pool around the body. Flies begin to circle it, their bulbous bodies consuming the flesh of your former friend"

Also, if you do talk your group into it, know that at that size the term "Wasp swarm" takes on a whole new meaning. :evillaugh:

I just came upon another question, which I seem to have overlooked while making my awakened characters. Do I need to take the +2 HD from the Awaken spell when making an awakened animal a character? If so, I might owe some people an apology...

It probably wouldn't be too hard to talk the DM into letting you avoid those if you wanted too. Otherwise, you need them, and they will help balance out the caster brokenness. Judging by the fact you are still saying awakened character, I assume that you couldn't talk the rest of the group into the rodent campaign? A pity, duels against Huge 12HD, CR 9 badgers with ridiculous str and con and rage make fun encounters. Also brutal ones for low level NPC squirrel warriors(see above)

My next gaming session is this Thursday, so I haven't been able to bring it up yet. I doubt any of them would agree to this, but I plan on keeping your rodent campaign idea in mind until I finally find a group to do it. Who knows, maybe one day I'll finally have the skills to try DMing, and I might slap it together myself. It's a pretty cool idea for a campaign, and seems surprisingly easy to create from the normal rules.

I have to agree that the +2 to my ECL would help balance out a tiny psion's brokenness, and maybe my DMs would agree. However, it wouldn't really work for a tiny Rogue.

Hey! I like Redwall. It's a great series, and I must have read each book in the series 2-3 times (I would have done more but there are just so many). Besides, they teach you a bit about tactics (of course, you could easily figure them out yourself because they are simple). Like having 2 rows of crossbow users. Have one fire while the other reloads so that you always have damage being rolled.

It's not a childhood book. It's not an adult book either, but it's not a kid's book.

A simpler way to do something similar would be to play an anthropomorphic squirrel using the guidelines in Savage species. You would be slightly larger but would be able to use weapons like your suggested bow without spending the cash on the gloves.

I don't have the book, so I'm afraid I don't know exactly how it would turn out, but from what I've hard, its a reasonable way of turning an animal-like race into a workable PC.

I once played a mechanical squirrel character and it was quite silly/fun. Origionaly he was a Gnome Bard who had a mechanical squirrel as a pet. He got into a sticky situation where he was betrayed by one group then minutes later by the second (the two groups were opposed) and long story short, I got my DM to let my spirit inhabit the mechanical squirrel body.

I had (as the gnome) put a couple of alchemist's fires (we used a relative weight system, so don't expect to do this if you go by book for weight) inside the squirrel and I (as the squirrel) jumped around the room throwing them at people.

For kicks and giggles, equip your Squirrel with a magic item called a Possum's Pouch. It basically creates a stomach pouch that works similar to a bag of holding. You'll be able to hide your weapons and equipment in there and look like a completely normal squirrel. People might not even realize that squirrels don't have pouches.

I wanna say its in Complete Adventurer, but I'm not sure. You could always flip through a Magic Item Compendium.

Otherwise, I'll just post the stats for you on Friday afternoon. :)

Good luck. I've been wanting to play an awakened Moon Rat, mostly because our game world has a vermin deity named Ojike the Rat Lord.

Also, Vermin Lord (BoVD) is a fun prc for a tiny creature. Just change the flavor of the class for rodents instead of bugs, and switch the bug wings out for a flying squirrel type ability.

Okay, since it seems that tiny creatures are popular around here, and I get the feeling that almost everyone here would be willing to try a rodent campaign, I present a template that can be used to make animals tougher for a distinctive fight, I present the rabid template.
Rabid
Creating a Rabid Creature: Rabid is an acquired template that can be added to any animal or magical beast which could possibly be classified as a mammal.
HD: +3 hp per HD.
AC: +2 natural armor
Attacks: Increase damage die one step for bite. Bite now inflicts rabies on anything it hits.
Special Attacks: Rabies, Furious Swing.
Special Qualities: Constant Fury, Immunity to mind affecting affects, immunity to sleep, Insane, Frothing.
Abilities: +8 str, +6 con, -4 int*, -6 wis.
CR: +2
LA: N/A

Rabies: Rabies is a disease with an incubation period of 1 week. DC 17. Anyone who succumbs to the disease gets the Rabid template and dies 3d4 months later.

Furious Swing: When fighting, the rabid creature can take a -2 penalty to all attacks to gain one additional claw or weapon attack.

Constant Fury: A rabid creature will attack any living creature within 10 feet of them at all times(Note: This is intended for a scale of 5ft=6in)

Insane: A rabid creature uses their charisma score instead of their wisdom score for a will save. They also lose the ability to communicate.

Frothing: Anything with the Rabid template frothes at the mouth, and a DC 10 spot check can identify a creature as Rabid

*This is intended for a game where it is about animals who are more intelligent, if applied to an animal with normal int they become mindless.

I only put on the needed changes, and CR may be a bit much, when I played an animal campaign it was low magic.

Sorry if this is no longer relevant, but to answer the OP:

1. No official stats for squirrels
2. They can stand on two legs. I would treat them as dragons: they can engage in melee as if they were bipedal, but they cannot move with any reasonable swiftness unless they move on all fours.
3. Their hands, while similar to ours, are only really capable of clinging. I've spent time with baby squirrels ... beyond clinging and basic manipulation, they lack the ability to control things like we do.
4. Bipedal when standing, quadruped while moving.
5. Yes. Fast + climb speed + Tiny-sized = win

Anyways, why not just create your own squirrel race; look to the halfling for the example, make it a monstrous humanoid and add your own abilities and voila!

Or...consider the Hardoze (Stormwrack) to copy off of, for flying squirrels!

3. Their hands, while similar to ours, are only really capable of clinging. I've spent time with baby squirrels ... beyond clinging and basic manipulation, they lack the ability to control things like we do.

Baby humans lack complex hand movements too, and you might want to be a bit more generous in a fantasy game, especially if it makes things more fun.

Not only is it blasphemy, but ferrets are mustelids, the same family as badgers and otters, and are not related to rodents at all.

And yes, I do have skill mastery on my Knowledge (Nature) checks. :D

I put (not really) after it, and said that they were just around the right size. Read the actual thing. I couldn't remember the actual name, I just remembered that badgers, otters, wolverines, and ferrets were all in the same family, and that badgers, wolverines, and wild ferrets(not the pets) are all furious killing machines. Badgers are nasty.

You betcha! :D
They'll rip apart little critters like nobody's business. A badger can make a train back up and take a dirt road.
Plus, D&D weasals get that cool "bite and lock on" ability.........aww, now I wanna make a ferret Reaping Mauler.
Or maybe a Wolverine Frenzied Berserker! :lightbulb
Just have the Fighter take the Fling Ally feat, chuck the little mongrel at the Red dragon, and watch the show.

Rip apart little creatures! Thats a huge understatement. They will own most of the creatures their size, and those above too. Like foxes, a badger can take two to three foxes without trouble. I have a you tube clip to demonstrate badger vs. fox.

And this is a badger taking out a cobra

And here is what a bunch of otters have to say about pathetic coyotes:

Also, ferrets regularly eat prarie dogs that are bigger than them, and can slaughter rats.

Moral of the story: Never mess with anything in this family. It is inviting doom on yourself.

Speaking of ferrets, those things really need a +4 bonus to escape artist checks if they are going to be stated out. The only thing harder than picking up a ferret that wants to go down is photographing a ferret that doesn't want to be photographed. Unless they get the "Shiny!" reaction from the camera lens, you get a nice facial picture that way.

The stats are a bit off, the long bow damage needs a -2.
