| Naderion09-12-07, 11:41 AM | Both, it adds up, but each racial hit die counts also like a level when it comes to xp. |

Also are base attack and other things tagged to hit dice used? It depends on the number of hit dice a creature of teh race you want to play starts with. If the creature entry lists only one hit dice, 1d8 1d6 1d12 ect. then you simply discard the first hitdice when you take a class level. If it has 2 or more hit dice, treat them as class levels, your basically a multi class character. However, racial levels are alway counted as a favored class, in addition to any other favored classes you might have, so they wont ever give you an XP penalty. |
| Thomar_of_Uointer09-12-07, 09:57 PM | If I choose a class and I am playing a monster race, do I use the racial hit dice or my class hit dice? Also are base attack and other things tagged to hit dice used? Both. As a monster character, you start with a set number of Hit Dice (unless you have exactly 1 Hit Die and are described as advancing by class in your monster description, then you just drop that Hit Die and add class levels). These Hit Dice are pretty much identical to class levels, but don't grant you anything beyond what's listed in your racial description. The Hit Dice also grant you ability score increases and bonus feats (sometimes the bonus feats are mentioned in the Monsters As Characters entry, when they are the exact bonus feat isn't specified because you get to choose), +1 to an ability score every 4 levels and one feat every 3 levels. As for advancement, you essentially multiclass into your class. They're just added on in the same way 3 levels in Monk would be before you start into Fighter or whatever it is you're choosing. Your Hit Dice don't count against you for the purpose of multiclass penalties. Your ability score increases and bonus feats are determined using the sum of your class levels and Hit Dice, again, +1 to an ability score every 4 levels and one feat every 3 levels. Your Hit Dice also count as levels for the purpose of the experience you gain from encounters and the experience you need to advance in levels (yes, this is an addition to your Level Adjustment, and yes, it does adversely affect you). Most DMs will not allow you to play a monster character if your Level Adjustment and Hit Dice will put you beyond the party's level range.
