This is a cat-like race I created for my home-brewed world. I would really like to know what people think. I want real criticism, from other players and DMs. What you like or don’t like about the race, what you think should be changed, and any other suggestions you may have.

WILDMANE PANYNX
In the deep forest their live the Panynx, a race of feline humanoids that are as graceful as the great cats, and nearly as dangerous. Those who enter the Woodland realm of the Panynx, be warned do harm to the woods or the animals within and face certain peril.

Personality: Wildmane Panynx tend to be reserved staying among their own kind, they are very proud of their people, Panynx will take any perceived insult as an insult not only against them but also against their race, the most frequent and unintentional insult is when someone refers to a Panynx as “elf-cat” or “cat-elf”, more then a few people have found them selves face to face with an enraged Panynx over such a mistake. Wildmane Panynx hold their traditions of oral story telling, dance, and ceremonies in the highest regards, of all the traditions the Moon Hunt is the Panynx’s most sacred. Panynx prefer little to no clothing, but when circumstances require clothing they wear loose clothing that doesn’t restrict their movement, most often their cloths are made of animal hide and can be colored in greens and yellows and decorated in silver disc. Panynx are slow to make friend and quick to make enemies. When a person does prove themself to a Panynx they have made an ally for life, this also holds true for enemies. When hunting Panynx are as a predator killing the old and weak leaving the young and strong to thrive and breed, they respect and honor their pray for the food their bodies provide and the clothing and shelter their hides create, panynx spend a lot of time honing their hunting skills. They have a love of the woodlands beauty and a healthy respect for ferocity of nature.

Physical Description: Panynx males have well muscled bodies and typical stand between 5'8" to just over 6'5", and weigh from 145 to 200 pounds, Females also have well muscled bodies but have slender builds and stand between 5' and 5'6" but rarely any taller, and weigh from 105 to 135 pounds .All Panynx are covered in a very fine soft fur, Panynx fur can range in color from flesh, tan, brown, or yellowish brown, but is always white on the face, chest and abdomen and has some kind of black pattern, cheetah or leopard spots, or tiger stripes along the neck, shoulders, and back. Their hair colors very from black, red, reddish brown, or brown. Panynx have cat like ears, males have semi-flat noses, while females have thin slightly flat noses. A Panynx’s eyes are cat like and come in a wide range of colors but are most commonly yellowish green or Deep blue. Panynx have slightly larger canines then humans, Panynx have a grace and agility that fits their cat like appearance, and are quicker then most races, do impart to there powerful legs. A Panynx reaches adulthood at about 20 years of age and can live to be well over 100 years old.

Relations: Panynx have a different outlook on nature then elves and half-elves and because of this a rivalry has formed, this has not stopped the Panynx and Elves from forming strong alliances in times of war and defense of their mutual homes. Panynx are uncertain about Humans, they find Human’s treatment of nature to be unpredictable at best and destructive and wasteful at worst. Halflings and Gnomes are greeted openly and are well liked, especially when they have a good song or story to share. Panynx are curious about Dwarves not understanding why a race would choose to live underground when the wilderness is so vast and full of life. Half-Orcs are treated just as any full blood Orc would be, with open disdain, Half-Orcs are seldom trusted and almost never welcome.

Alignment: Panynx are often neutral as they try to hold close to the animals. Though many lean towards good to some degree finding it a fitting match for their protective nature. A few renounce good, neutral, and law they instead embrace evil and chaos reviling in the brutality and savageness that accompanies it.

Panynx Lands: Panynx make there homes in woodlands and deep forests, always near water sources and in areas with plentiful game for food and clothing. Panynx “families” are referred to as “Prides”. Each pride consisting of no more then a hundred to a hundred-fifty Panynx most of which are extended family, each pride has a leader, as well as at least three elders (two females and a male). Prides are semi-nomadic living in fur huts and moving from one sight to another larger site when the weather grows cold, moving during this weather change is a survival tactic, many Panynx prides join together in these locations to help fortify their defenses. This changing of location can lead to disputes between other prides and some times elves, but rarely do any lead to severe conflicts. Other them elves, some bards and a few fur traders the Panynx have little contact with outsiders.
Panynx encountered in human lands are commonly hunters, trappers, or guides. Many are also “Moon Guided”, Panynx who have been sent on a quest by their pride, they will often join up with noble and goodly groups of adventurers.

Religion: Panynx revere The Goddess Laenya, The Great Pride Mother. Panynx lore tells that doing a fierce battle against a destructive alien god, who’s true name has been lost to antiquity, but is now simple known as “Blight”, that Laenya received a deep wound to her abdomen, it was from this blood that Laenya created the first Panynx, infusing them with the purest of primal energies, and decreeing the Panynx be the guardians of nature. She then gifted them with the combination of intelligence and animal instinct, along with a knowledge and love of nature. Panynx Clerics are almost exclusively female, this is not because Laenya doesn’t want or discourages male clerics, it’s just most males feel out of place in Laenya’s clergy. The evil Panynx that choose to destroy and ravage nature worship Laenya’s son Vraikus.

Language: Panynx speak a Animalistic language that is composed of rolling R’s, and O’s, deep G’s and long A’s, to people that are unfamiliar with the language and even many that are, it can sound very animalistic. Panynx have little use for writing instead they pass their history along through oral traditions, but their has been a some development of a Panynx writing style, using the elven alphabet.

Names: When a Panynx is born they are given a name by both of their parents, this name is made by choosing the name of one of the mother’s parents and one of the father’s parents (Mother’s name if child is a girl or Father’s name if the child is a boy), these names are combined into a single name (example: the father of the mother is named Torun, the father of the father is named Bravlor so the child would be named Bravun), the father’s father’s name is used first when naming a boy and the mother’s mother’s name is use first when naming a girl. the child goes by this name until adulthood and completion of the Moon Hunt at that time the Pride elders choose a second name for them. This name usually has some significant meaning, such as it may refer to physical features or great moments in their life. Elder names are sometimes composed of a noun and a adjective or may contain two nouns or two adjectives, example: Greyclaw (male) or Moondancing (female).

Male Names: Bravun, Clawain, Grelaw, Hilacker, Leowl, Reng, Smokane, Strouncer, Treadow.

Female Names: Avriel, Belluna, Dounce, Goldhaze, Grepaw, Mistail, Moondana, Nyur, Purana,

Elder Names: Clawrain (male), Ferntracker (female), Greyclaw (male), Mistymane (female), Moondancing (female), Redfang (male), Starryeyes (female), Stormpouncer (male).

Pride Names: Prides are named after the leader of the pride’s Elder name, most Panynx when introducing them selves will state their name, their pride’s name and the area that they hail from, Example: “I am Strouncer, Clawrain of the Ferntracker pride of East Darkwoods”, or they could introduce themselves simply as “Strouncer Clawrain”.

Adventurers: Panynx who takes up the adventuring life is most often “Moon Guided”, they have been sent out into the world by the pride elders or a high priestess of Laenya to seek out their destiny. Some travel abroad to grow in strength and skill so that she may one-day lead her own pride or challenge a current leader.

Nnngh... None of the core races have 40' movement. I'm inclined to say it's a good LA +0, but it's just too good. You might be able to balance it by saying they have to spend two move actions or a run action to benefit from it, or make it a ragelike speed boost that ends with fatigue.

I'm not going to go ahead and comment on the fluff or stats, mainly because the dexterous catfolk are a dime a dozen, but I would suggest that you shorten the name to just "Wildmane" or "Panynx". Together, it's really just a mouthful, and you yourself referred to them on multiple occasions as one or the other. The only real reason I would see for keeping it would be if there were multiple subraces of the "Panynx" type.

I know there are alot of cat races out there, this one I started sometime ago, and I really tried to make this race standout. The name Panynx is the name of the race(ex.halfling), Wildmane is the name of this sub-race(ex.lightfoot). I've created a total of 5 Panynx sub-races.

● Panynx base land speed is 40 feet.
Looks good to me my only thought is the movement speed question, you might think about reduceing it to thirty and giving them Longstrider(spell like ability) once a day.
● +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks: Panynx have very acquit senses.
acquit=Acute?

I’m glad that the only thing you feel is off is the movement, I’ve created a new trait that I hope balances out the 40ft movement.

●Cheetah’s dash: After using the Run action a Wildmane is fatigued for 1d6 rounds.

I’d like to know what you think.

Ah, but if you're in a fight you're not going to be running much. The 40' movement is a tactical issue, you're just plain faster than everything else, and that's a needless nerf that actually makes them slower than anything else in a chase over open ground.

Mmm... How about saying they can move at 40' once per round if in light or no armor? That's almost like a 5' boost to speed, and it should still apply to running.

Ok lets forget about Cheetah’s dash, I like your suggestion about longstrider, that’s something I didn’t even consider. I’m submitting the following changes.

● Panynx base land speed becomes 30 feet.
●Spell-like Ability: 1/day-longstrider (duration 5 minutes, gain one additional use per 5-levels, max 5/day)

I lessened the duration, but increased how many times it can be used based on class level. I really don’t know if that makes it to powerful or not?
