| Selgard01-09-08, 06:32 PM | Another thread on Lycanthropes lead to me reading the template relatively closely. One line reads- and i quote "Hit Dice and Hit Points Same as the base creature plus those of the base animal. To calculate total hit points, apply Constitution modifiers according to the score the lycanthrope has in each form. " This at least implies that in each form, the Lycanthrope can have a different HP total. Question: If the creature has 50 HP in Human form and 60 HP in critter form: does he gain 10hp when he goes critter? Does he lose 10hp when he goes humanoid? Does it move his total, or just the max? (for instance, if he's 30/50 and goes critter, is he now 40/60? If he's 40/60 does it go 30/40 or do 10 damage just disappear when he shifts?) Apologies if this is clearly stated somewhere- but I couldn't find it in the Lycanthrope descriptions anywhere. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/lycanthrope.htm Is where I am reading. Thanks for the input. |
| Silvercrys01-09-08, 06:47 PM | It changes everything. I believe it's in the Barbarian section of the Player's Handbook, actually, about the losing HP from a rage. (Since the bonus HP from rage are from a bonus to Constitution, it applies here as the HP totals you're talking about are derived from differences in CON.) |
| Selgard01-09-08, 07:14 PM | Because I'm dense: Just to be clear: if the total is 50/60 as mentioned above, and in critter form they had 9hp left and revered to Humanoid form, they would be at -1, correct? |
| Silvercrys01-09-08, 07:30 PM | Yes, exactly correct. :D |

Thanks for the input. You would have the same hit points in all three forms. Look a little bit farther down in the SRD where it is showing the were-bear all three forms have the same hit points. |
| Silvercrys01-09-08, 09:31 PM | Text trumps Table. In this case, the text that says Con mods change (And therefore affect hit points) trumps the table that says the Werebear has the same hit points in all forms. Although, there may be Errata to that effect. I'm not completely clear on the Wildshape/Polymorph Errata, so I could be mistaken on that count. |
| Neutronium_Dragon01-10-08, 12:41 AM | Actually, the answer seems to be something else entirely. They decided to make lycanthrope hit points handle a little weirdly. This is illustrated by the tables, but also stated in the text. Calculate the humanoid hit dice at the humanoid Con modifier, then calculate the animal form hit die at the increased Con modifier. Add those two together. The example in the text is just that: 1d4+0 from a commoner hit die coupled with 2d8+4 from the wolf hit dice (which are at +4 Con and thereby give +2 HP/die). I don't know why it was done that way, but the text makes it very clear that that's how you handle it. |
| Selgard01-10-08, 02:35 PM | Oh! Well, thanks for clearing that up :) |
| Silvercrys01-10-08, 04:04 PM | Wow. Well, that's... really odd. I do see what you mean though. |
