Opinion needed [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-01-07, 07:16 PM O.K One of my friends is starting a high level game in a the future. Basically he plans on going into far epic.

Now were all working on idea for a pcs and I feel like playing a dragon, not a half-dragon, draconic, dragonblooded or whatever else...

An honest to goodness, pure dragon.

Looking at the monster manual and the rules for savage species (wich unfortunetly are 3.25) I'm trying to figure out the LA for a young adult white dragon
Based on your opinion when comparing it with normal pcs, etc what do you believe would be a decent LA for such a character?

Here, I want opnions more then "this book says that creature has that LA" etc. More opinions

Considering they have 13 or something hit dice and are cr 8 something creatures (sorry don't remember the exact numbers). what would be a reasonable entry point ?

09-01-07, 07:30 PM I would most likely let you play one without a level adjustment. But I like monster characters that don't ****ing suck, so I am a little biased here. So, ECL 15.

09-01-07, 08:05 PM I would put their level adjustment at about +6. This would sit them just at 21st level, 22nd with a class level. Dragons make interesting PCs but are horrible to try and balance. Absolutely horrible. I suggest not even trying unless you're doing a one shot sort of thing.

Dragons age is a huge problem. A wyrmling dragon really isn't worth it as far as PC goes, but play a dragon long enough those sorcerer levels you accumulated early on get ridiculously powerful. I don't know why they even tried to make dragons playable and give them age categories, this is more of 3.0 stuff like half-celestials scaling LA.

Epic level gets worse, dragons are only really challenging when they get big and by then they double the PC level they are a challenge to. At this level your breath weapon doesn't help you, your limited caster levels don't help your your natural attacks probably won't help you unless you have a druid(god forbid you ever get dispelled). They really do make horrible PCs at this level, you could prove a decent mount for another character tho.

I would drop the idea of playing a dragon. Why play an NPC race?
