| Kyric01-04-08, 09:45 PM | Okay this is a new race I'm building for a sort of scandanavia based world, part of the reason I'm building this is because I got rid of the half-orcs (sorry, I just don't like them, half elves are also effectively gone, the half-races just annoy me). Please take a look. Personality: To civilized society the Peregrinus are gruff, abrasive and lacking in social nicieties. They are extremely utilitarian and use words sparingly assuming that their meaning will be understood and are usually taken aback or even offended if they are not. Though they can be philosophical, they are almost always looking for a use of something in the material world while ignoring those ideas that have no relevance to their lives. They do not ask many questions and are slow to laugh at a joke or jest and are often reserved except around close friends or family. They donot believe in inherent rank and often judge an indivisual on his actions and on a case by case basis, they value indivisual freedoms yet see the need to protect the tribe, this leaves them as on average neutral while in reality they rarely are, as they lean either towards lawful or chaotic alignments. They often are thought to fight recklessly, which may be the case, but they are extremely good fighters and are absolutely deadly are horseback. Many say this makes up for their apparent lack of caution. They value their herd more than any other form of material wealth (they are know for saying “gold is all fine and good, but if your starving you can’t very well feed yourself if all you have is gold”). Physical Descrp: Peregrinus are tall, and muscular, standing between 51/2 and 7 feet, but because they are so lithe, they typically only weigh between 100 and 200 pounds with men being significantly heavier and taller than woman. Peregrinus skin tone varies somewhat between indivisuals and clans, the vast majority are light pale though significant minorities exist of those who have dark tan and even deep brown skin. Their eyes are generally light, blue and green being most common, their hair is often pale, usually running from white to blond, again this varies with clan and some are known for black or red hair, they wear their hair short. Beards are abhorred by the men and are shorn quickly. They prefer simple, functional clothing, though they often wear elaborate furs and pelts during the winter. Peregrinus are considered adults at 18 and can live to be as much as 110 years. Relations: Peregrinus consider all other races weak, except the half-orcs who they consider unwise, and the dwarves whome they respect for their metal working and hardiness and thus have cordial relations with. Human towns are seen as crutches for an overall weak race (despite the obvious similarities between the two races) and their men too weak to defend even those. They often raid and pillage small villages. Good and neutral Peregrinus often attempt to negotiate with towns but due to the tribal structure of their society they can rarely understand human ideas of loyalty and long-term deals, and as such relations are still tenuous, when it becomes nessesary for good or neutral clans to raid, they try to keep thee blood shed down. Evil clans raid and pillage without regard for the people and usually leave no survivors except the woman who are taken away to become slaves for the victorious warriors. Alignment: Peregrinus are generally chaotic and tend toward neutral, they value indivisual freedom above everything except the clan, and as such their leaders are generally lawful. Peregrinus Lands: Most of the lands claimed by Peregrinus are vast plains and tundra that they migrate across every year, though human civilization often encroaches into these areas and this leads to most of the conflicts between the two races. The Peregrinus do not claim lands per se as they have no sense of land ownership unless one is at that spot, it is just land. In a way they consider any land that can support their herds to be their land and will fight to gain territory over those lands. Religion: Many peregrinus are pagan and worship the Nordic Pantheon, some peregrinus have converted to Christianity in recent decades and this split is slowly growing, and may soon lead to religious wars amoung the nomads. Language: Peregrinus speak Runic, based on the dwarven alphabet. Most of peregrinus literature is oral and changes with each story-teller while the main ideas remain the same. This oral tradition is marked by major heroes and acts of bravery but also spliced with tails of tricks played by a Peregrinus on monsters and civilized society. Peregrinus often speak dwarven and giant and sometimes common. Names: A peregrin is given a birth name which he wears until he is considered an adult at which time he chooses a name for himself. Most formal occasions use the choosen name, but on most occasions the birth name is used, especially with people who knew him before he chose his name. A peregrinus birth name is often short, two syllable, while the choosen name can be long and be made of several words, usually strung together to give some desription of his personality or physical achievements. Most outsiders receive his choosen name and thus many outsiders believe that this is the only kind of name the Peregrinus have. The Peregrin also wear a clan name to identify themselves. Here are some birth names: Male names: Jaes, Rach, Ormm, Kallr, Nok, Dak Female Names: Kimrt, Ordae, Iana, Laen, Rheul Choosen Names: Bellator Equis, Aquila Oculus, Romanorum, Armo de Bovis, Cursor Clan Names: Ieremo, Nyonia Relucio, Daiermo, Sairanio Adventures: Peregrinus adventurers often must prove themselves to gain status in the clan and to gain power and knowledge, they also adventure for excitement if herding has become too boring for them. Many often flee shame or enemies in the clan, and simmarly they may go out to bring power and honor to the clan. Peregrinus Racial Traits: • +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity -2 Constitution, -2 Charisma, -2 Intelligence, Peregrinus are extremely strong and because of the lithe frames, very fast, however they are not as sturdy or hardy as dwarves (or even humans) and they can be gruff. As they do not put any sort of emphasis on intelgence outside fighting and herding, many do not understand much beyond their immediate world. • Medium: as medium creatures Peregrinus have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. • Peregrinus base land speed is 30 feet. • Resistance to Cold 5, while they are thin and somewhat less sturdy than humans, Peregrinus have been living in cold territory since their existence and have built up a resistance to the frigid effects of their home territory. • Low-light vision, A peregrinus can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, moonlight torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions. • Weapon proficiency: Peregrinus receive the martial profinciency feats with the longbow and the shortbow (including composites) the battleaxe and the greataxe and the great sword. The Peregrinus practice in fighting with big axes and swords as they are considered strong weapons and are highly esteemed, they also are known for their mounted archery. |
