| SOUPlex03-06-07, 05:18 PM | I've got a homebrew campaign I'm working on where the world is covered almost entirely by water. The gnomes in my world are pretty unique culturally, but are statistically the same as the PH version. They consider the idea of 3 extremely holy and worship 3 goddesses, believe they go through a cycle of 3 lives, etc, etc. The gnomes created the Warforged for physical labor but have since freed them of their 'slavery' and instated them as full citizens of their culture. Now, my problem is this: I feel I need a 3rd race to round out their culture and society, but am at a loss as to which it should be. I'm looking for a race that would both compliment and contrast the other two races (gnomes and warforged) when all three live in (relatively) perfect harmony and share 90% of the same culture. I already have several races in my world which are already ruled out as they have their own cultures: Humans, aquatic elves, aventi, merfolk, and darfellans. Furthermore, there are races that I have decided to not include in my world at all: Dwarves (they sink in a world mostly water) and *normal* elves (the aquatic version is all I need). Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
| gullas03-06-07, 05:47 PM | kobolds:D |
| Elemental_Elf03-06-07, 06:13 PM | You need something either larger than both the Warforged and Gnomes or something the same size as the Gnomes IMHO. Maybe a Half-Giant? Na, too weird. Kobolds? Na, too ugly. Ah! What about a race of Gnomes that are in touch with the Light of their Goddesses. Something like a Small Aasimar! But make them a little different. perhaps... Ah, you said your world was mostly covered by water? Well what of these Aasignomes have long bleached hair (like your typical Aasimar) that moves in the wind like the waves of the sea. Add to this the color of their skin is shaded in colors of blue, aqua and green. Mechanically they would be a blend of Gnomes and Aasimar: -2 STR, +2 CHA Small: As a Small creature, an Aasignome gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but he uses smaller weapons than humans use, and his lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character. Aasignome base land speed is 20 feet. Darkvision: Aasignomes can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Weapon Familiarity: Aasignomes may treat gnome hooked hammers as martial weapons rather than exotic weapons. Add +1 to the Difficulty Class for all saving throws against Light spells cast by Aasignomes. This adjustment stacks with those from similar effects. +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against kobolds and goblinoids. +4 dodge bonus to Armor Class against monsters of the giant type. Any time a creature loses its Dexterity bonus (if any) to Armor Class, such as when it’s caught flat-footed, it loses its dodge bonus, too. +4 racial bonus on Listen checks. +1 racial bonus on Craft (Alchemy) and Spot checks Resistence to Electricity 2 Automatic Languages: Celestial, Common and Gnome. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Giant, Goblin, and Orc. In addition, a gnome can speak with a burrowing mammal (a badger, fox, rabbit, or the like, see below). This ability is innate to gnomes. See the speak with animals spell description. Spell-Like Abilities: 1/day—speak with animals (Sea mammals only, duration 1 minute). An Aasignome with a Charisma score of at least 10 also has the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—Daylight and prestidigitation. Caster level 1st; save DC 10 + Aasignome’s Cha modifier + spell level. Favored Class: Paladin. A multiclass Aasignome’s Paladin class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty. |

Humans lived on the cast off hulk of floating vessels. Elves lived somewhere else and neither race would talk to the other because each blamed the other for the catastrophe that destroyed the world (half-elves were incredibly rare). Dwarves had burrowed and found the ground beneath the oceans. Gnomes were basically the craftsmen and the few dwarves on the surface were brought there on Gnome submersibles. Halflings were mostly the same except that instead of wandering on foot they wandered on ships. Aventi, Darfellan, Aquatic elves, and Hadozee were pretty much unchanged from their Stormwrack entries. Fun stuff... |
| JarionSilverblades03-06-07, 07:11 PM | It might just be me but I noticed something. Gnomes: Mind. Warforged: Body. Now it seems the 3rd race should be spiritual, having a strong connection to the goddesses. Maybe, Lesser Aasimar: Soul. Of course that's just my observation. |
| taradusis03-06-07, 07:19 PM | Celestial water elemental(holy water elemental).Perhaps an awakened porpoise.Locathah,in the process of being "UPLIFTED"by the gnomes? |
| Wharin03-06-07, 07:49 PM | I would love to get an honest chance to play a Darfallen (Stromwrack, i believe). A water setting would be the perfect place. |
| SOUPlex03-07-07, 12:24 AM | Wow, ya'll went in a completely different direction than I was thinking. And a good thing too, because I was stumped:D Elemental_elf, JarionSilverblades, and taradusis: you all have definately got my attention there with a "holy" race to go along with the gnomes and warforged. Now, to do so, I'd have to make them aquatic...hmmm aquatic genesai/gnomes/aasimar..... something to definatlely think about. The direction I was going in was more on a physical scale: I've got one Medium humanoid, one small humanoid; metal and flesh; what about beasts or monstrous humanoid....but I couldn't find anything that fit. :king: :king: :king: time to put on my thinking cap and get down to acid-testing races. I will definately post here with whatever I can make out of this  |
| Disciple_of_Juiblex03-07-07, 12:47 AM | A few ideas Hellbred, with all being the spirit varient: you could rewright it allitle so when a person would become a hellbred they are additionaly transported to this island (or culture, whatever). also in comparison with the other two they would be the only one not with a bonus to their con but a negitive. finnaly the can round out the trinity- gnomes being born, hellbred being reborn, and warforged being , well never born. Sharakim?:they are in races of destiny and are kind of like cursed human orc guys ... but they have a + to stregth and intelligence (while loosing dex and charisma making them the only one of the group to have a negitive to dex) and gain power in darkened areas which would make them a great contrast. however they are listed as LA:1 but most peaple i know think they are fine at LA: 0 Shifters: perhaps to show a more native side to the community. while i would think that both the warforged and the gnomes might be very artifice orrentied they could be the closer to nature race. add the fact of both the winged and swimming shifter trait and i think they could do well in an aquitic world. |
| Argo03-07-07, 01:49 AM | Raptorans (Races of the Wild) or Aarakocra (Races of Faerun) would be an interesting counterbalance to the Gnomes and Warforged. Really, my vote would be for anything with wings. Lizardfolk would also work, if you alter their society to be less brutal. EDIT: Thri-Kreen would be cool too. |
| Orchomenos03-07-07, 08:21 AM | Are your gnomes aquatic, or dwelling in the few remaining lands? You could have half-warforged (half-golems), incredibly crazy gnomes who replaced some parts of their body with warforged parts. I'm not sure about Aasimars, since you already describe your gnomes as very pious. I would prefer Water Genasis. |
| obrysii03-07-07, 08:26 AM | What about Merfolk? |
| KavonRa03-07-07, 08:44 AM | hobgoblins, both mind and body, type of race. DM rule that they are generaly lawful neutral and you got yourself a very nice race. |
