| B2810-04-07, 06:13 PM | Hello. Ettins are my favorite monsters and I think it would be really cool to play one. Problem is, their ECL is 15. I would like to play one, not full power of course, at lower levels. I was thinking of adding the multi-headed template from Savage Species to the ogre progression from the same book. It would have an 5 ECL though, and it wouldn't really be an ettin. Can any one help me out? |

| Borris10-04-07, 11:00 PM | Just so you know, such a creature would have an ECL of 8. 4 HD and +2 LA for the ogre, and an additionnal +2 for the extra head. Instead, you might want to try (and maybe that's what you mean) a two-headed half-ogre. That would indeed be an ECL 5 character. 1 class level +2 LA for the half-ogre and another +2 for the two-headed template. I guess it could easily pass as a half-ettin, twisted as that character concept may be. |

Also I would use the ogre class in Savage Species where I could start level 1 and gain more of the ogre's power as I level but wouldn't have a class. I do like your idea for the half-ettin. It gives me another option so thank you. |

Just choose the things you like the most about ettins and then try to pick up a few features that look like or are the same than those you want. Quick draft -Ettin: step 1- choosing traits - Large Giant - Some natural armor - Heads grant +2 bonus to listen, spot and search - Heads grant a superior two-weapon fighting like feature - Low-light vision. - some giant HD levels (just to balance the thing) step 2- how much room do I have ? 5 is fairlygood, Ogres got 6,so 5 seems ok, in fact i would take Ogre as a template.Maybe I have to modify superior two weapon fighting a little: "Lesser ettin" TWF - You get two weapon Fighting Feat, and +1 attack and damage bonus when attacking with two weapons. step 3- The Ettin (First Draft-Ogre Like) * +10 Strength, -2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution, -4 Intelligence, -2 wisdom, -2 Charisma. * Large size. -1 penalty to Armor Class, -1 penalty on attack rolls, -4 penalty on Hide checks, +4 bonus on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits double those of Medium characters. * Space/Reach: 10 feet/10 feet. * An Ettin’s base land speed is 40 feet. * Low-light vision * Racial Hit Dice: An Ettin begins with four levels of giant, which provide 4d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +3, and base saving throw bonuses of Fort +4, Ref +1, and Will +1. * Racial Skills: An Ettin’s giant levels give it skill points equal to 7 × (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1). Its class skills are Climb, Listen, and Spot. * Racial Feats: An Ettin’s giant levels give it two feats. * Weapon and Armor Proficiency: An Ettin is automatically proficient with the javelin and the Morning Star. * +2 bonus to listen, spot and search. * "Lesser ettin" TWF ( two weapon Fighting Feat, and +1 attack and damage bonus when attacking with two weapons). * +4 natural armor bonus. * Automatic Languages: Common, Giant. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, Orc, Goblin, Terran. * Favored Class: Giant(skills:Listen, search and spot) * Level adjustment +1. |
| Daemyn10-06-07, 02:28 AM | Just make it very interesting and have two players run that character. Each round they role a will check versus one another and which ever one wins or beats the others score get to handle the "ettin" for that round. That is a sure way to make things very screwy!!! |
