| Temmogen12-20-07, 01:15 PM | OK guys, I need a name for a 1/2 elf 1/2 dwarf race. I just can't bring myself to call them Dwelfs or Elarfs. Unfortunately I've hit a block, and can't think of anything right now, so anybody got any ideas? Please try to be serious..... |
| Krusk12-20-07, 01:42 PM | You could have both dwarves and elves refer to them as something diffrent. Possibly some form of variant on the elven word for shameful, and the dwarven word for shamed one. The languages i used are from the races of X series. Elven name-ahelus which means sadness cousin Dwarven name- aster which means enemy kin. Better than dwelf at least. |
| Dog_O_War12-20-07, 01:57 PM | Dorf, but only if they play golf. Seriously though; 1/2 elf, 1/2 dwarf? why?! Try using the two with modified names in reverse, like the Flraed. |
| Sinfire Titan12-20-07, 02:06 PM | So, you are basically making Gnomes? :P |
| EvilVegan12-20-07, 03:05 PM | OK guys, I need a name for a 1/2 elf 1/2 dwarf race. I just can't bring myself to call them Dwelfs or Elarfs. Unfortunately I've hit a block, and can't think of anything right now, so anybody got any ideas? Please try to be serious..... I would second the 'Gnome' vote. Seriously. Most people would mistake this creature for a really tall gnome or a short and ugly half-elf. Other than that I do like the ideas of using a mixture of language based names above, but then elves wouldn't be known as elves (rather they'd be their own language's name for them rather than common 'elf'). Of course, I'm fully behind the breeding of elves and dwarves as I think this would happen often in a fantasy setting. I mean, just look at gimli and legolas. They would have had babies if the government would allow it. |
| HassanNinkin12-20-07, 03:14 PM | Only if Anne Rice were the author. I second the "why?" notion. |
| VanGrue12-20-07, 03:21 PM | You know, Gnomes really are pretty close overall. They are still considered one of the "Races of Stone" much like the dwarf, but are much more open emotionally and have a magical streak to them, a mystical side reflected by the elves. Officially, I'm not sure elves and dwarves can procreate together; There's an interesting discussion on this somewhere else, I think in the 4e forums. If you insist on your own custom Elf-Dwarf race, try to integrate parts of speech of one or both languages, or something to sounds like it could. :) Duvelren? Alergar? Regardless, try to have fun with it. After all, that's what the game's about. :D |
| Temmogen12-20-07, 03:44 PM | Short version... I need a mercenary race. Long Version I'm creating a Musketeer Class and I need a race that can be very mercenary and retain more of the rough and tumble of the dwarf, and some of the racial stuff from an elf. VanGrue..Thanks for the names I think Duvelren sounds good. Krusk, I think the individual races will use those names to describe them, so thanks there too. They're going to be slightly stocky, short half elves in appearance. |

Hobgoblin. +2 Dex, +2 Con... what's not to like? Just bring down the LA with some actual drawbacks and you're set. |
| Jaxgaret12-29-07, 03:13 PM | Mongrelfolk. |

| The_Shaman12-29-07, 06:18 PM | Actually I've heard of dwelves, and it doesn't sound half as absurd as "bugbear." |
| ragoftag12-30-07, 08:40 AM | I used to have a similar race I called the 'Dallamiar' (sp), pronounced da-LA-me-ar, cribbed from somewhere, but they were closer to tech-minded Gnomes of current D20 fare. They were better described as 'earth-elves' and would be about +2 LA if brought forward. You also need to answer the obnoxious questions like: 'How often do they occur?' 'Do they breed true?' 'How and where are they accepted?' 'Do they identify themselves as a culture?' and others A game I know little of has 'Fey' Elves, and Gnomes are a result of their interactions with Dwarves over the ages. They breed true and have established their own place in that world. Functional changes from regular D20: zero. Flavor changes: ? |
| unundindur12-30-07, 12:09 PM | Actually I've heard of dwelves, and it doesn't sound half as absurd as "bugbear." Seconded! That is one name I have been pondering a on a lot (a lot is of course relative to how much I ponder on other D&D race-names). |
| Red_Wizards_Rock12-30-07, 12:41 PM | I don't know what the feeling is in 3rd but in 2nd edition the 2 races were not able to have offspring. I believe it was in the Dwarven handbook, but if your DM is ok with it than it doesn't really matter. |
| Wharin12-31-07, 04:39 AM | For my Dwarf-Elf hybrid race, i called them "Gloristili" which is Dwarven (as per the RoS table) for "Silver cousins". It sounds kinda elven, but definate of Dwarven origin... Just my 2 copper |

I think there was a dwelf involved somewhere in the Myth Drannor story... Maybe the one after whom the city itself was named (which would make him/her Drannor, I guess). Can anyone whose Realms-fu is better than mine shed some light on the issue? |
| vegetalss412-31-07, 06:56 PM | Ambornations...:P just joking i second the ahelus/aster idea |
| AngryJake01-01-08, 05:56 AM | aren't Asters those brass fire Dwarves from the MM @Wharin: It's weird that the Dwarves would give such a half-breed a name that even vaguely resembles something of any value what-so-ever, given the traditional view of Dwarves regarding the elven races. |
| Wharin01-01-08, 07:01 PM | Well... My guys had this whole story behind them; part of which involved them being the offspring of largely wealthy adventurers (thus being very rich themselves), and figured that elves and dwarves are on largely amicable, if competative, terms. |
