| societyonstrings10-21-07, 09:07 PM | I have been searching through the library of different races but i am struggling to find something that would work well for a monk character (bonuses to wis) and a LA +0. i know this is a really dumb question but if someone could point me towards a couple options i would appreciate it. |
| HCL10-21-07, 10:03 PM | there isnt an LA +0 race with bonuses to wis because its power level would be OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!!!!11!!2@ as a cleric or druid, I recommend human but... hmmm... I guess if you wanted to have a monk oriented race it could be like Hermit Elf medium +2 wis -2 cha Medium Size Land Speed 30' Immune to sleep effects. +2 on saving throws against enchantment. Low Light vision +2 racial bonus on Listen, Search, Spot, and tumble checks Secret door sense as high elf Languages as High Elf Favored Class: Monk hey thats not bad |

They provide +4 strength, +2 constitution, quick access to orc paragon (for +2 strength, full BAB, d10 HD, and removal of light sensitivity), and -2 to all mental stats. Intelligence and charisma are dump stats for monks to begin with, and wisdom can be brought back easily to 10 or 12 with a few points. there isnt an LA +0 race with bonuses to wis because its power level would be OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!!!!11!!2@ as a cleric or druid It's more complicated than that, I feel. It's true that the nature of most spellcasting classes makes it so that your key mental stat and your constitution are pretty much everything. OK, so initiative is also important, but a marshal pal can pump that up into the stratosphere. The minimum casting stat prerequisite applies pressure to get your casting stat to at least 19 as well, even if save or X spells aren't your thing (like you're a fighter/mage). Not to mention that many prestige classes offer full spellcasting and bonus goodies that make going pure wizard/sorcerer/cleric at times pointless. But it's also true that because humans and other core races don't get mental stat bonuses, other races haven't been allowed to get mental stat bonuses—like intelligence, since it would outdo humans' skill point bonus—without level adjustments, ridiculous penalties (those singing monks), or being gray elves. It's only recently that they've let up and allowed several +2 Cha, -2 Con races to get by without a level adjustment. If they had just given humans and gnomes +2 intelligence, we'd see at least some variety, at least between humans, gnomes, and gray elves; if not humans, gnomes, gray elves, and dwarves (since constitution and huge save bonuses are powerful advantages when you have d4 for HP and bad base saves). We could even bring down Blues and Tieflings; neither were that special to begin with. If elves and maenads had +2 charisma, again we'd see some sort of competition. And finally, mental stats (more wis and cha than int) tend to be pretty useless unless you have a super-duper class feature (like the marshal's auras or spellcasting) or powerful feats behind it. It's a flaw of the system, I think. |
