Quick question here.

I am planning to have a half-orc, but I rolledo nly a 4 INT. Does the -2 from this race bring the INT down to 2 or is there a 3 minimum. I seem to remember one, but after searching for some time, I couldn't find anything.

Thanks to all for your help.

Can I ask then, where is the rule that states that 3 is the minimum an ability can be lowered, in spite of a race decrease? I didn't find anything under the abilities section of the PHB.

Thanks again.

I can't remember the exact entries, and I'm away from my books..

But 3 is the minimum intelligence for "humanlike" intelligence (sentience, basically). It's also the minimum needed in order to take class levels. :)

Actually, that works out fine for you. You can take the 4 int and the -2 racial penalty, and the 3 int min simply means you end up with and int of 3 anyway. The -1 debt comes into play if you ever raise it, though.

I'm not sure where, but I remember specifically reading that somewhere.

3 Int? But that is like.. that's... I'm almost sure that there are smarter familiars out there o.o

Actually, I'm thinking about being a druid where the animal companion is smarter than it's master, and kind of takes over for the "unenlightened" druid. Something like a Calvin & Hobbes duo.

I know this doesn't fit into the "races" category, but adding a template would actualyl take it under 3 right?

3 is not the minimum an ability can be lowered to.
it is only the minimum for intelligence

Is there really such a debt? I thought that any penalties that would otherwise lower your int below 3 is simply wasted.:P

uhm, here's a little tip for you, never play a extremely stupid character, out of combat its the most worthless thing you can have, especially as they're worthless at everything thanks to their 1 skillpoint/level

If i were you, i'd just ask the DM to reroll, unless you've already started playing that is........you should get a 6.......6 is a good number for a half-orc, otherwise, you'd be on the brink of not being smart enough to speak (you also have to have 3 int. to speak any languages:P)

Oh, believe me I have considered that, and everything else that will make it a tough character to play. Two things, first being that the party is big and that lessens the attention to my "deficiencies". Second is that the other stats are pretty good, and we do have a "moving points system", which is what I'm considering. I just though that I could have a feral, 1/2 orc character that only sacrificed 1 point of intelligence. I later found out that feral would take it below 3, so that nixed that. I mean 3 INT, maybe, 2 INT, now way! :)

Yeah, I get what you mean. In fact I was thinking 6 is a good, stupid character . Not being able to hold a conversation is not fun. I was trying to get as many "intelligence decreasing" power-up's as possible, thinking I would only have to sac 1 INT, but other things would take it below 3. There is no rule saying that 3 is the floor limit of intelligence, just that a racial modifier cannot take it below 3. At least that's what I come away with here.

My Current Character: 2nd Level Drow Paladin WITH 20 STRENGTH!!! ......awkward.....

That is awkward. :)

With three int as a DM I would make you take 20 just to open the door to the inn

The characters WIS is 17. So I have a character with 3 INT and 17 WIS. I basically made him that he was raised by wolves. He has good intuition (the WIS) but no formal education. By formal I mean "any".

That's about the only thing I could think of.

Intelligence=/=your education

It's your character's abiltiy to learn and reason.

A character with scores like that is going to be extremely stupid, and probably have a very limited vocabulary, but is going to be very deep and insightful into things.

The -1 debt comes into play if you ever raise it, though. There's no debt, your base Int just gets raised to 3 after penalties (a questionable bonus, since you're still dumb as a rock.)

It's gonna be sweet when you get hit by some int draining attack and go comatose. But look on the bright side, there will be a 75% chance a lesser restoration will give you all of your int back :D
