Since Powerful Build is a racial trait, I posted here (I hope that's correct).

The RAW goes through much explanation of Powerful Build. I'm trying to simplify it by taking the approch to compare it to Large Size, since they are almost identical -- with some very important differences.

What are the differences?

Powerful Build is exactly like Large Size, except:

No Reach
Carrying Capacity is not doubled
Space is still 5 feet
No AC penalty
No Attack penalty
No Hide penalty
No Intimidate bonus

(I'll modify the list as suggestions come in)

Well, you can have powerful build and small size at the same time (for example), then you'd have the grapple of a medium creature (+0) the hide of a small creature (+4) and be able to use medium or small weapons without penalty.

I don't see a problem with how powerful build is explained as is... it makes sense to me.

Powerful Build is exactly like Large Size, except:

I think that way of thinking will run you into quite a bit of trouble.
Powerful Build is never exactly like Large size and if you think that way you may be inclined to do things that Powerful Build doesn't permit.

Natural weapon damage is not bumped up 1 size category.

Actually, Powerful Build DOES give you that intimidate bonus, since intimidating is an opposed check (most if not all of the time, if I correctly recall...).

However, while the title of your topic is right, you don't quite follow through all the way, and if you simplify it like that, then you're going to end up doing a lot of things that Powerful Build does NOT permit. It's honestly simpler to just list what Powerful DOES let you do than what it doesn't:

1) Treated as one size larger for the purpose of opposed checks.
2) Treated as one size larger when determining whether a special attack can affect him.
3) Can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty.

THAT IS ALL!
If you're having trouble with it, then pretend that these abilities have nothing to do with size at all. They're just 3 different racial abilities.

People assume that Powerful Build means you have to use larger armor or gives you better carrying capacity or makes your unarmed strike treated as larger or lets you be large for prerequisites or lets you wield huge weapons with a penalty. IT DOESN'T. Nowhere in the text of Powerful Build does it indicate anything like that.
