I once stumbled across an issue of Dragon Magazine that converted the "core" lycanthropes from the Monster Manual (werewolf, wererat, wereboar, werebear- there may have been 2 others as well) into character classes. Can anyone tell me what issue it was?

On a related topic, does anyone have any suggestions on how to give the same sort of treatment to the plethora of other lycanthropes out there? I just recently stumbled across an issue of Signs & Portents from Mongoose Publishing (issue 36 specifically) that had details for Were-Mantises, Were-Spiders, Were-Mosquitoes, Were-Butterflies (?) and Were-Dung Beetles (!), and I'm curious about converting them into classes.

You can do a search on the main wizards site for savage progression there are five articles dealing with the listed weres in the MM1. You can use the MM1 chapters 2&3 along with the DMG page 172 Monsters as Races heading to make other creatures into were-creatures.

I hope this helps.

The "Savage Progressions" articles here on the WotC site have what you need as far as the MM lycanthrope types go:

As I understand it, the Dragon versions actually produced some discrepancies when compared to the MM entries, but the ones in Savage Progressions should duplicate them properly.

As for others not shown there, it's primarily a matter of splitting up the animal-specific abilities between however many hit dice it has, trying to keep things roughly even. The templates shown there should give you a good yardstick to work with.

My thanks for those responses, and I found the Dragon issue- 313. I was giving thought to the idea of a Werefox (and I don't mean a Foxwoman) class and I was thinking that the Werewolf class might be a good base. What is your recommendation? Keep the class as is and simply note the visual differences, or modify it somewhat?

If the latter, could you suggest how to modify it? My basic conception is to replace the Strength bonuses with an equal bonus to Intelligence, and likewise do the same with replacing Constitution for Dexterity. I was also thinking of modifying the Damage Reduction to be something other than silver -can anyone suggest an appropriate material?- and switching the allergen from wolfsbane to cherries/cherry blossoms.

Using the werewolf and simply calling it a fox is probably the easiest.

3E-officially, whatever traits a fox has would be whatever the werefox gets. I don't think foxes have been statted up in the MM though.

I *can* tell you that the lycanthrope template does not grant Int bonuses due to wereform - only the physical stats of the animal type factor into the alternate forms.

The DR would remain DR/silver as of 3.5E, and 3.5E lycanthropes don't specifically have "allergens" a la the old Ravenloft books. Wolfsbane is used as a potential cure for early-stage infection, but it won't specially affect a lycanthrope outside of that (other than being a general poison to everyone, not just lycanthropes).
