A friend of mine is making a Goliath character from the Races of Stone, and I have some questions on how his size comes into play...

It says in the race description that Goliaths are considered either medium or large creatures, depending on how the situation is advantageous to them. So does this mean that I can pretty much never give the player a penalty because he is so large?

I guess this is linked to my next question. If I have a dungeon that is 6.5 feet tall, and the Goliath player in my game is 8 foot tall, what kind of penalty do I give him to things like combat? I assume that the line about how their size applies to advantageous situations would not apply when the player has stated theya re 8 foot tall, and the dungeon is 6.5 feet tall.

I'd say that their height doesn't directly reflect their build. I'd still apply a penalty for being 8' fighting in a 6' hall.

The build applies to anything where their size would be called into question on resisting effects such as grappling, tripping, and overrun. In all purposes they are a medium creature with some bonuses of a large creature.

It's been debated whether or not the bonus applies to a Goliath intiating grapples, tripping, and overruns.

What kind of penalty should I give him for being in 6.5 ft. dungeon?

That'd be entirely up to you depending on how hindered you think he'd be having to slump over in combat.

I wouldn't be too severe on the guy, but maybe just a -1 or -2 on his AC reflecting the fact that he can't move around too quickly. Maybe even lower his movement speed by 5.
