Aesh gives a +1 bonus on Strength checks and Strength-based skills checks. Does this mean they only get bonuses on things such as busting down doors and jump and swim and the like? Or do they get any bonuses on attack or damage or grapple?

I'm pretty sure they don't get bonuses to the latter because a grapple check and attack roll are different from strength checks, but I just want to verify.

Also, for the word Aeshkrau it says they may use their strength score to determine the bonus spells per day. Does that mean they'd still have to have, say, an intelligence of 19 to be able to cast ninth level wizard spells? And does this affect the saving throws?

I really like the idea of Illumians, and I hope to play one, but if their abilities aren't that great, I dunno. Or maybe I'm overlooking something. Anyways, thanks in advance.

Being that attacks rolls, grapple checks, and damage rolls aren't strength checks (although they can be modified by strength), you stand correct about your assumption.

Anything that requires you to "make a strength check" is affected. This includes trip, overrun and bull rush, as well as opening doors and breaking bond and whatever else you DM deems appropriate. As noted above, attacks, grapples and damage is not affected.

Trip. overrun and bullrush... good to know.

Any word on the casting half of it? Maybe it's just me, but it seems kind of silly to have to have an intelligence of 19 and use strength in lieu of intelligence (or wisdom or charisma). I mean, I know it's easy to get a strength of well over 19, but having to have at least 19 of your mental stat... yeah, I'm sure you know what I mean.

And thanks for your reponses!

I believe it only counts for the bonus spells. You still use the normal attribute for maximum spell level you can cast.

While this may seem useless, it is still helpful for folks like Rangers and Paladins. A Wisdom of 14 gives them access to their maximum spell level, and they can then use a high strength score to grant bonus slots beyond the extra first and second level slots they would have normally received.

As written it only works for bonus spells; however, you can always check with your DM to see if s/he will allow it to work for maximum spell level castable as well.

P.S. It does feel a little underpowered as written.

Then you just have to convince your DM that it works for saving throw DC's and you're in the money!

Come on, daddy needs a new mystic theurge!

You can still wear a +6 stat enhancement item on top of a starting 14 score to access 9th level spells. It's not going to get much better than that because Illumians were conceived to be a multi-classing race. The sigil bonus allows you to have a high combat stat to boost your spells per day and thus the effectiveness of a gish build. Most gish builds won't rely on spells with saves, but rather weaponlike spells and buffs anyway. More bonus spells per day will help to compensate for the typically slower rate of spellcasting advancement.

And yea, the bonus does help out single-classed rangers and paladins a fair bit also. Even the Krau side does.

That would pretty much negate the Illumian benefit. After all, why get your bonus spells based off of your Strength score when your normal spellcasting attribute is just as high?
