My wife has a Whisper Gnome Rogue starting at 2nd level. She is determined to be able to fly. Right now it looks like she will be donning the half-fey template (using the template class here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a))

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a quick way to get flight? Prefferablly w/o any LA or at least just a +1? Or any better suggestions for a +2 LA template that has flight?

There is the winged template from Savage Species.
The Dragonborn of Bahamut gives you flight eventually at no level adjustment, but cost 100 gp.

Yeah, but it is the same LA as half-fey (I'm pretty sure, I'll have to double check), and half-fey is much better.

I was looking for something a little more immediate.

Well, I can't say this is the quickestway to get flight, but you wouldn't have to take a level adjustment. The PrC Elemental Warrior in the Planar Handbook gives you a fly speed 20' (perfect) at 4th level, if you go with the air elemental subtype. With the feat Air Heritage (from the same book) your fly speed increases by 30 feet.

Keep in mind that the half fey listed there hasn't been upgraded to v3.5. It should get DR 5/cold iron at some point.

As for the quickest way to get flight, DM fiat. Drop wings of flying in her bedroom (assuming you're the DM). Sure it's not innate, but you won't have any level adjustment.

But other than that, just use half fey. It probably is the easiest way. (at least off the top of my head)

Just checked the winged template and it have +2 level adjustment. I just remembered as +1, which was why I suggested it. My bad.

The Dragonborn of Bahamut gives you flight at 6 HD at no level adjustment, which you also wanted.

Btw does it have to be natural flight?
Otherwise there is a lot of other ways to get flight.

You can also develop a custom made race, like this one...

Wingling, Winged Gnome
Description : The Winged Gnomes are rare. They live in haventrees, in high nests linked together in a complex network of ropes and bridges. They are nocturnal, hiding from daylight. They usually live in the high trees of the forests, far away from other species, excepted a few contacts with sylvans and forest gnomes. They are often surrounded by giant owls, that they consider as friends and never as mounts, and by owlbears, that they use as guardians, at the base of their haventrees. They live in nature, but don't have any innate talent for nature magic or arcane, like their cousins.
Appearance : Winged Gnomes have general gnomish traits, with an olive skin, brown to emerald hair, to blend in foliage. They have big eyes, green or yellow in color and birdlike. Their nose is short and curved like a beak. Their ears are wide and pointy, with some fur at the tip. Their wings are actually membranes under their arms, covered with feathers, usually brown and blck. They don't wear shoes, using their feet to hold on branches, letting their toenails grow long and strong, like talons. They are quite more fragile than their gnome cousins, lacking their natural resilience and having hollow bones.
Attributes : Str -2, Dex +2, Con -2
Special Abilities :
Small size (AC+1, attacks +1, hide +4, weapon and carrying limitations)
Speed 20
Fly, speed 20 (average). Winged gnomes actually glide more than they fly, lacking physical strength and endurance, being able to fly for short durations only (1 round per level + Con modifier) and must rest for an equal amount of time afterwards. When gliding, a winged gnome receive a +4 to move silently.
Low-light vision
Darkvision 60
Speak with owls, 1/day
Animal Handling +2 (owls & owlbears), Knowledge/Nature +2, Listen +2, Spot +2 (at night only)
Vulnerability to Daylight : -1 to attacks, saves and skills
LA+0

Nope. It just has to be unlimited (as in not usable only x minutes/day).

I can't just give her any freebies because I am actually not the DM for once (wow, I get to PLAY?!?...cool. I think I have been a PC for only 3 sessions in the past 2.5 years).

I was looking over the Winged template again and talking to her about it, and it actually fits her character better than half-fey. She never likes too many magical options (like the ton of SLA the half-fey gets). She just wants to be able to fly, and Winged gives a better Dex bonus, better maneuverability, and no Con penalty.

@seldriss, Official stuff only. Variants welcome though.

There are a lot of magic items that grant flight.

Brooms of flying (9 hours/day), carpet of flying (unlimited), and of cause the wings of flying.
These are just those in the SRD, many other exists.

Yeah I know, but those are a bit pricy for low levels. Plus the broom and magic carpet weren't exactly what she wanted. The wings of flying would be nice, but those are 54,000.

It looks like she will be going with the winged creature template.

With a +2 level adjusment at 2nd level?
Maybe as a monster class, thus have one level of rogue and all the benefits of the template but the flight. Just a suggestion (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/spellsS.html#suggestion) :D

hm.

I'd toss out unlimited flight as a Level 10-equivalent ability. If memory serves, the Raptorain race (from Races of the Wild) is able to glide at Level 5 and gets flight at Level 10.

With that in mind, your very best bet is to engage your DM. He'll have final say over whether you can simply take that Winged template anyway, so give him the opportunity to work your desire for flight into a memorable storyline.

I know it is a +2 LA (I am VERY understanding of how racial HD, LA, and ECL work). I will probably end up breaking it up into a 2 level template class. Something like what Wizards did with the Half-Fey. Either that or just start with it as is, and not add another class level until she reaches 4th. I'll have to talk to our DM about it.

As for the break down here's what I got, sound good?

1st: +2 Dex, +2 Wis
2nd +2 Dex, Wings

OR

1st: +4 Dex, +2 Wis
2nd: Wings

I'm leaning towards the first one.
