After getting back into DnD and playing a few games, I figure I'd try my hand at creating a race. Or, rather, porting one over. Since I've grown fond of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, I decided to try to port over the Kroot to DnD. Enclosed are my rambling notes to this project, and if anyone can chip in to help improve this or spot a mistake I missed, must obliged.

REVISED GOAL: to make the Kroot into two playable classes, one with LA 0 and one with LA +1. Consider the LA 0 a "Kroot in Training" and the LA 1 the standard Kroot.

Here is the current crunch, with some notes. Once I get it suitably complete and polished, flavor text shall be added. EDITED to reflect new goals, to update, and I'm now currently trying to polish up EotDead and Kroot Heritage.

Kroot LA 0
• Str +2, Int -2, (Possible idea: giving them Cha -2 and giving LA0s the choice of either Str +2 or Dex +2)
• Medium sized
• Base speed: 30 ft.
• Racial Bonus: +2 to Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Survival
• -2 Sense Motive
• Receives the Track feat for free
• Racial Weapon: Kroot treat the Kroot Stave as a martial weapon
• Eater of the Dead: (see below)
• Kroot Heritage: (see below)
• Automatic Lang: Common and Kroot
• Favored Class: Ranger

Kroot LA 1
• Str +2, Dex +2, Int -2 (possible Cha -2)
• Medium sized
• Base speed: 40 ft.
• Climb speed 10 ft
• Racial Bonus: +2 to Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Survival
• -2 Sense Motive
• Receives the Track feat for free
• Scent ability
• Racial Weapon: Kroot treat the Kroot Stave as a martial weapon
• Eater of the Dead: (see below)
• Kroot Heritage: (see below)
• Automatic Lang: Common and Kroot
• Favored Class: Ranger

Eaters of the Dead: Kroot are extremely voracious carnivores, and will feed on recently killed foes. While feeding will help them replenish hp, they are so voracious that they will often ignore other things, even retreating foes, just to feed. They need to make a Will save to snap out of their feeding and resume normal activity. NOTE: Health regen could be based on level 2*Lev, also health limited to 2-3 times a day. Feedlust always active)

Yabba the What's post on feeding looks good to me, especially the part about the Will saves. HP gained depends on size of the corpse and how long they feed on it. I'm also thinking hp gained could also slowly increase based on level (the Kroot learn to get the most from their meal).

Kroot Heritage: I'm planning on giving the starting Kroot player a choice from a list of bonuses:
*bonus feat
*Darkvision
*+2 skill bonus
*+10 to speed (Not stackable with Barbarian Fast Movement, probably not stackable with the LA1's speed)
*+1 natural armor
*(Maybe for the LA1) +2 stat bonus

This list will differ, as some bonuses will be LA0 and/or LA1 exclusive (for example, the +10 speed will only be offered to the LA0)

Some reasoning:

* The WH40k stat the Kroot with a strength above the average human, with flavor text describing the Kroot as having "Muscles like metal cables, able to pull taut in an instant, giving them a jerky, deceptively fast gait." However, their brains have difficulty with inventiveness, imagination, and creativity. So, bare minimum, Str gets a +2, and Int gets -2.

*Kroot have the WH40k abilities of Fieldcraft and Infiltrate, which translate into Hide and Move Silent really well. Fieldcraft also gives them Woodland Stride (EDIT: Removed Woodland Stride, as it is less skill and more magic ability. Thanks, MagnaSecuris!)

* Kroot use the Kroot Rifle:
http://pictureposter.allbrand.nu/pictures/Demonicuss/KrootRifle.jpg
Since gunpowder is not often used in DnD games, I downgraded it to a stave, a melee double weapon.
Cost 60gp Dam(S) 1d6/1d4 Dam(M)1d8/1d6 Crit x2 Range - Wt 10lb Type Slash/Pierce
Can make trip attacks with the stave. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the stave to avoid being tripped.

Well, that's it for now. Lemme know if I screwed anything up, and feel free to give me advice and ideas.

I love this idea!!!

I'm a Tau player myself and have always loved the Kroot.
I'm rather busy with school at the moment so I don't really have the time to work on this idea for now, but I will post some ideas as soon as I have some spare time again.
Until then, have a :cookie: :D

Greetings, Bowen Silverclaw.

P.S.: after the Kroot, let's try the Vespid :D

I would make the 'Kroot stave' able to trip, just for a little extra power.

Also, while it fits flavor-wise, I think Woodland Stride might be a little too much. I think the racial bonuses on survival should be enough. Woodland stride is supposed to represent a sort of 'magical' ability that plants move out of your way.

Thanks for the ideas, MagnaSecuris. I'll add 'em in a bit.

Speaking of ideas, since the Kroot are carrion eaters, I was wondering if a bonus against disease (non-magical) would fit.

That's a cool idea, although a +0 doesn't really do them any justice. I'd like to see a +1 version too. I wish I had DC, America got it at least 3 weeks before the rest of the world, so I'm still waiting.

Id make them +1 LA... give them a Plus to dex or Wisdom....
Give them a 10' climb speed.
a 40' Land speed.
And Endurance instead of track for their free feat.

Acid test them... if they seem weak, givem the scent feat too.

Dont forget... new options for Kroot Rangers and Druids- Krootox and Kroot hounds!

My original plan was to make the Kroot LA 0, so anyone could pick 'em up and play with little hassle. But your words have got me thinkin'...how about a LA 0 "Kroot-in-Training", and a LA +1 "Standard Badass" Kroot.

Also, I'm going to try to work on EotD a bit. I'm thinking that whenever a Kroot kills someone in battle, he has to make a Will save or be compelled to feed. That save is modified depending on whether he fought and killed the opponent by himself, if he got a crit...things like that.

Cool, Kroot in DnD!
Jus' wondering, will you be implementing the fact that they can pass on traits of the foes they eat to the next generation?
I have no idea how this would translate into a game mechanic (if at all), but it's a big part of their way of life.
Demonicuss

10-28-06, 03:38 AM
Howdy Haruspex.

The deal with the traits thang is that it is kinda hard to port over, and also can really be abused by those damn dirty munchkins. "If my Kroot eat this troll, then the dragon, then the mind-flayer, my offspring will have regen, psionics, flight, and fire-breath! Also, next session, I'm playing as Son of Kroot!"

In Dark Crusade, the Kroot units can feed on dead troopers to replenish health, so that's what I decided to use.

Hmm, that would be a bother. Another idea I had was for Kroot-specific feats that represented your ancestors feeding on certain prey. Something decidedly not-uber like darkvision or +2 to an ability score, and a limit of one such feat per Kroot. What do you think?

Ah, the kroot, its funny that your creating this as i'm working on a necron race ported over to D&D as well. To fit them into D&D standards they are going to be the original warforged spawned from creation forges eons before the giants even had them. Of course the flavor could be changed depending on the setting I put them in.

Low light Vision, +10' ground speed, skill bonuses maby?

I really like this idea, and I've got a couple of my own. In DC, the Kroot not only replenish hp, but can gain bonus hp on top of that. I think instead of this Kroot adaptation simply healing, they should be adding hp on top of that which lasts as long as they live.(i.e. is reset to zero after they die and are ressurected.) My theory on this eating is that the amount healed should be based on the size of the victim. Small is 1d6, medium 1d8, large 1d10, and so on in that fashion, and the time required for eating this corpse needs to be taken into account. A small character will likely require minimum 5 minutes to fully consume, and it should be higher with size increases, as the Kroot eat every bit that they can in an effort to put the genetic material to good use. Then, for every health point gained through this consumption, you can raise the maximum hp of the Kroot that did the consuming.

Also, I'd really like to see a -2 to Cha, as even among the incredibly tolerant Tau, the act of consuming corpses is looked down upon. This subtraction could easily be complimented with a +2 to Dex, which seems fitting to the Kroot.

Other than that, I like the racial skill bonuses, the racial weapon, and pretty much everything. The track feat seems fitting for the Kroot.

For the record, the Kroot are by far my favorite race among Warhammer40k races, and I'm really liking this idea. Thanks, Demonicuss.

Agreementing with Grey Mage, additional hp based on feeding would be too much - a Level One Kroot what's been chowin' down could end up with 100hp, and that's not quite right.

I'm going to try to tone down/refine EotDead a bit. Here's how I see it running - while the Kroot may always feel compelled to eat it's kills, it'll only be able to get the hp healing only twice or three times daily. I could probably flavor-text it as Kroot regurgitating a previous kill to try out the new fare.

As for how much hp it gets, while I originally had it d6 or d8, perhaps it could scale up the more levels one has, like say, start it out 1d6 for levels 1-5, then 2d6 6-10, etc. If you the reader have a better idea in mind, let me know.

Okay, progress report time. Like I said in Post #7, there's going to be two types, a LA 0 and a LA1. Here's what I have so far:

LA 0 Kroot
• Str +2, Int -2

POSSIBLE IDEA: Since Phelot suggested a -2 to Cha due to the Kroots feeding habits, I might add that in. If I do, for the LA0s, I think I will give the player a choice where that +2 stat boost goes: Str or Dex. I think it ties in with Kroot Heritage nicely (new idea, see below)

• Medium sized
• Base speed: 30 ft.
• Racial Bonus to Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Survival
• Receives the Track feat for free
• Racial Weapon: Kroot treat the Kroot Stave as a martial weapon

• Eater of the Dead: Kroot are extremely voracious carnivores, and will feed on recently killed foes. While feeding will help them replenish hp (probably 1d6 or 1d8, available three times daily), they are so crazed with feeding that they will often ignore other things, even retreating foes, just to feed. They need to make a Will save (DC 10 or 12, for example) to snap out of their feeding and resume normal activity.

When a Kroot kills, it may have to make a Will save to not compulsory feed. The will save depends on how it killed it:

If the Kroot was a spellcaster and vaped it with a spell: no save required. Kroot feel the hunger when they kill in close combat.
If the kroot killed something attacking/fighting an ally: Either no save or a small save required. Helping a buddy probably won't induce the hunger.
If the Kroot fought and killed a monster in one-on-one combat - Average will save (10, I'm guessing)
If the monster wounded the kroot: increase the save. Bloodlust leads to hungerlust...
If the Kroot scored a critical hit: Increase the save.
If the Kroot killed it by critical hit: highest save. Bloody chunks are most appealing to a Kroot.

While feeding, the Kroot is so focused on feeding that it will ignore anything that goes around it, except something attacking it. While this would be okay at the end of a battle (provided the party is fine watching him feed on a freshly killed foe), if the party are chasing down opponents or are still in battle, having the Kroot take a break to eat would be a problem. In cases like this, the Kroot can make a Will save (again, probably dependent on factors like the above) to snap out of his feed-craze and help out.

• Kroot Heritage: Because a Kroot's ancestor may have fed on different prey, each Kroot can select one bonus from a list to represent the ability its father or Shaper had:

(NOTE) This list isn't final, it's just something to let y'all know what I'm working towards)
*Darkvision
*skill bonus
*+10 to speed (Not stackable with Barbarian Fast Movement)
*+1 natural armor

• Automatic Lang: Common and Kroot
• Favored Class: Ranger

For the LA+1 Kroot, same as above except for:
Add +2 to Dex
10' Climb Speed
40' Speed (Note, this won't stack with +10 speed Heritage)
Endurance
Scent Ability

And for heritage, perhaps a +2 stat bonus to be applied whereever.

Lemme know if I unbalanced anything, or screwed up something obvious, or if you have a nifty idea.
Phelot_Plaguecrafter

10-29-06, 04:04 PM
Holy crap, I'm silly. I had the idea in my head, but didn't put it here quite right. Okay, what I meant was that the Kroot gets 1 bonus hp per corpse consumed, not per hp gained. And I forgot to add the cap on the bonus hp: A Kroot can only have as many bonus hit points as he has constitution(magical bonuses do not count for this). 18 natural constitution score means maximum 18 bonus hp.
Okay, now that I've actually said what I meant to say, that's my idea.

By the way, I'm liking the idea of the Kroot Heritage thing, but I believe that for this special ability, there should be some kind of penalty, as just picking up +10' movement speed just because seems pretty busted to me. Maybe some skill penalties? -2 on Sense Motives, -2 on Knowledge checks, to represent the detachment they have with other races, or something. I don't know, just food for thought.

Still loving this idea, by the way.

It isn't a bad idea, but I hate it because it's being spawned from GW. I also don't like it because the OP got the idea from DoW: DC. It would be better to look at the Tau Codex from GW instead of using a video game for a reference. Other then that it looks clean; I like the way you made it. :)

Phelot, I can dig the penalty to Sense Motive, but penalizing a skill that requires training to use is kinda pointless.

*On another note: Does anybody here have Xenology?*

I've gotten the impression that Kroot can benefit directly from eating. Didn't Gakhar (the kroot) get a increased white-bloodcell count after munching on that Astropath? (Xenology)

I was thinking that one way of treating inherited traits would be feats. Pick a feat at character creation for a certain trait. And if my guess is correct, at other levels too.

Kroot
• Str +2, Int -2
• Medium sized
• Base speed: 30 ft.
• Racial Bonus to Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Survival
• Receives the Track feat for free
• Racial Weapon: Kroot treat the Kroot Stave as a martial weapon
• Eater of the Dead: Kroot are extremely voracious carnivores, and will feed on recently killed foes. While feeding will help them replenish hp (amount to be decided upon, probably 1d6 or 1d8), they are so crazed with feeding that they will often ignore other things, even retreating foes, just to feed. They need to make a Will save (DC 10 or 12, for example) to snap out of their feeding and resume normal activity.
• Automatic Lang: Common and Kroot
• Favored Class: Ranger Overall this doesn't look too bad, though a few bits need to be refined. In particular, the ability to eat corpses needs to be refined, so that damage healed is based on the amount of time spent eating corpses, with maximums based on the size of the corpses consumed. To avoid a level adjustment, I suggest a healing rate of no more than 1 HP per minute while consuming corpses, with the following maximums: tiny=1hp, small=2hp, medium=4hp, large=8hp, huge=16hp, gargantuan=32hp, collossal=64hp. Creatures smaller than tiny may be combined to treat as a single creature. Though I'm not sure how anything could consume a collossal creature in just over an hour. (Obviously they would need to consume the 'special' bits, rather than the whole corpse.) Regardless, they would need to be considered flatfooted while eating. Make the skill bonuses +2 each.

Make the DC of the Will save to stop eating based on their current condition. Do not require a Will save to postpone starting to eat while they are still threatened.
• DC = 8 + 1/2 missing HP - damage taken from immediate threats.
• If they're down 12 HP, then are hit for 4 HP, the DC would be 8 + (12+4)/2 - 4 = 12. If they are then hit (by a second attack from the same creature or by a different creature) for another 6 HP, the DC would be 8 + (12+4+6)/2 - (4+6) = 9. If the creature that hit them for 4 HP (presuming two different threats) then dies, the DC becomes 8 + (12+4+6)/2 - 6 = 13.
• If they're down 35 HP, then are hit by a fireball for 22 HP, the DC would be 8 + (35+22)/2 - 22 = 14.5 (i.e. 15).
• If they're down 35 HP, then are hit for 4 HP, the DC would be 8 + (35+4)/2 - 4 = 23.5 (i.e. 24).
• If they have not taken damage from an immediate threat, then that part of the formula is ignored. If they take damage from multiple immediate threats, all the numbers stack. Anything that has recently dealt them damage and remains in a position to deal them more damage is considered a threat.

Since i only know basic play of WH i can't say how accurate you are in my opinion. But your version certainly as some appeal to them. Lookind at the current traits i'd give it a very high-end +0 or low-medium +1 LA. The +0 is more likely as they seem pretty equal to dwarves (dwarves should have +1 LA -.-)

This idea really seems to be coming together. I like Yaba's idea of the HP being gained based on the amount of time spent eating, but I think there could be some 'Kroot Heritage' things added, maybe for no other reason than variety for both the LA 0 and the LA 1 versions.

Possible bonuses:
Swim speed of 10'
Claw/bite natural attacks
Toughness feat (Not the actual feat, but a representation of it.)
Cold/Acid/Fire resistance 5
Damage reduction 2/something
Racial bonus on the save required to make against eating dead things
Racial bonus on mind-affecting, or enchantment, or something save

Now that I'm seeing those, they seem kinda busted...Maybe they're only good for the +1 Kroot, but even so. Just some ideas.
Demonicuss

10-31-06, 01:24 AM
No offence Phelot, but the only ones I see possibily working (and even so, they're maybes) are swim speed, and maybe (MAYBE) bite attack. Your "Not the Toughness feat, but a representation" kinda sounds like natural armor to me, and that's already a Heritage choice.

Then again, anyone here who's got WH40K experience want to sound off with your opinions towards these ideas?

Back. I think Yaba the What's post regarding EotDead is damn decent, so I'll incorporate that into the mix. So, all that's left to dink with is Kroot Heritage, and adding some flavor text.

Eater of the Dead: Kroot are extremely voracious carnivores, and will feed on recently killed foes. Feeding on fresh corpses (this could be between "freshly killed" and "a couple of hours", not "rotting away into yuck") will help heal the Kroot. How much hp the Kroot regains depends on how long the Kroot feeds and the size of the corpse. For one minute feeding, one hp is regained, with a maximum of hp gained based on the size of the corpse.

*max hp based on size of corpse
- tiny 1hp (creatures smaller than tiny can be combined to form a single creature)
- small 2hp
- med 4hp
- large 8hp
- huge 16hp
- Garg 32hp
- Coll 64hp

(IDEANOTE: I might set it up so every third level or so, the amount of hp gained is increased somehow, either by regaining it quicker or gaining more. Flavor-wise, the Kroot is learning how to get the most of its meal)

However, the Kroot become so focused when feeding, they'll often ignore threats to themselves and the rest of the party. Kroot are considered flatfooted when feeding. It takes a Will save for them to force themselves to stop eating. Will save is based on how hurt they are:

DC = 8 + 1/2 missing HP - damage taken from immediate threats.

If there is no immediate threats, then that part is ignored. If there are multiple threats, they stack.

So, for example, if a Kroot is down by 12 hp, the DC is 8 + (12 / 2) = 14
If that same 12 dam Kroot is hurt again for 4, the DC is 8 + (12+4)/2 - 4 = 12.

Another example: If they're down 35 HP, then are hit by a fireball for 22 HP, the DC would be 8 + (35+22)/2 - 22 = 14.5 (i.e. 15). If they're down 35 HP, then are hit for 4 HP, the DC would be 8 + (35+4)/2 - 4 = 23.5 (i.e. 24).

If a Kroot is threatened before he starts to feed, he doesn't need to make a Will save, he can fend off the threat before he feeds.

So, next up to work on is Kroot Heritage:
* bonus feat
* Darkvision
* +2 skill bonus
* +10 to speed (Not stackable with Barbarian Fast Movement, probably not stackable with the LA1's speed)
* +1 natural armor or dam reduction /1
* Swim speed of 10'
* (Maybe for the LA1) +2 stat bonus other than Str and Dex

Lemme know what needs work. I'll be off writing some flavor text.
Phelot_Plaguecrafter

I think there should be assigned amount of time necessary to eat each size of corpse. Maybe 2-3 minutes for tiny, 7-9 for small, 10-15 for medium, and so on in that fashion, up to about an hour for a colossal.

I actually get the feeling that an hour might be a little small for a colossal creature, but I don't really know, I mean, A Kroot eats pretty damn fast. So, hey.

Kroot

The Kroot are a race of carrion-eating hunters, often selling their services as mercenaries.

Personality:

Physical Description: The Kroot are a tall, lean race, with average heights between 6 and 7 ft. Their mouths are vestigial beaks, and have thick quills for hair.

Relations: As the Kroot are mercenary in their dealings, they tend to get along with whoever pays for their services, and can work for anyone from humans, elves, dwarves, lizardmen, orcs, etc. Kroot tend to call elves "elders" and orcs "different orcs", for some reason.

Alignment: As a mercenary race, the majority of Kroot are neutral.

Kroot Lands: Kroot say they come from a forested land called Pech, and travel here in their ships to ply their merc craft. However, probably due to difficulties in translation, their word for "land" also translates into "planet". While most scholars tend to ignore this translation, those with knowledge of spelljamming

Religion: (shamanic, talk about Kroothawk)

Language: Kroot speak their own language, a mixture of clicks, squawks, and hoots, but they can quickly learn other languages.

I'd say regarding any possible bonuses from eating different creatures, make them temporary bonuses to skills, saves and whatnot. For example, eating a boar could give you a +1 bonus on fort saves for 1 hour or day/hd of the boar in question. Or perhaps a bonus to attack for 1 min/hd that kind of thing. And if you made a bonus like that the player of the kroot would actually be motivated to use the ability while in combat. So eating a quick enemy would make you +5 ft/ rnd faster for a short while. I don't know how this would be implemented in the game, like animals, one bonus, good outsiders another, but i think making the bonuses temporary and pretty minor would make them more balanced. And as written in the tau codex, the kroot usually don't get the bonuses from eating something instantly, they simply use the new genetic material to evolve faster with help from the kroot shapers (telling the kroot what to eat and what to eat).

I really like the work so far, Demonicuss. Here is another Kroot picture for you (Tau Empire Codex)
http://fr.games-workshop.com/40k/tau/jeu/tactiques/kroots/img/krootPic.jpg
Ignore the helmet

To go with the ideas people have had about skill/ability adjustments for the consumption of other creatures, here is an idea

Once consumption of the creature has begun, the Kroot player has two options:
>>Choose to gain temporary hitpoints EQUAL to the length of the feeding-time, and lasting feeding time x10
or
>>Choose to instead raise (or lower) one of his abilites or skills, up to a maximum of +/-3 per size factor larger than the player, up to a maximum of +/-9. This bonus may not exceed 1/3rd the difference of the consumed creature's base ability compared to the player's ability. (for example, a STR 10 Kroot could gain +3 Strength from a STR19 Large creature, but not +4 or more from a STR19 Huge creature.). If the player wishes to gain additional movement speed, it works in the same manor, save that it works at a max of 1/2 the difference (each 5-foot change is +/-1) This would last feeding-time x5

Admitted, it does limit some of the gains that a Kroot player could potentially make (such as evolution), but it does make it slightly more playable. Additionally, having the HP gained being temporary also limits this ability being used as a health-pack style device.

Keep up the good work.
Jayne
