Race for a Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-17-07, 10:27 AM Hi everyone! Thanks for looking at my thread. I usually play the front line guy :fight!: in our D&D campaigns, but I am going to try a spell caster :mage: this time. I am planning on being Neutral Good with the Silver Dragon subtype for the Dragon Disciple. We are starting at level 11! Here is my question: What races are good for Sorcerers? Bonuses in Charisma, Dexterity, or Constitution would be great! Thanks again!

07-17-07, 10:46 AM can't go wrong with the extra feat and skills from human.

i also like combining spellscales and dragonborn of bahamut in races of the dragon for a +2 CHA -2 Dex and some nifty racial fluff

07-17-07, 10:47 AM First choice: Poison Dusk Lizardfolk. Well worth the +1 LA. Next, Kobald. Make him dragonwrought for even more draconic goodness. With flaws you can give him a tail attack and then the wings. After you are done in Dragon Diciple take the Dragon Breath feat fro RotD. Breath every 1d4 rounds instead of a few times a day? Yes please!

07-17-07, 11:14 AM They are all from the book Races of the Dragon. Spellscales is a race. Dragonborn of Bahamut is a transformative race: you pick a starting race and become a dragonborn...all before 1st, dragonwrought is a feat you apply to kobolds that turn them into small dragons (dragon type).

Don't have the book on hand, so I can't be more specific.

07-17-07, 12:29 PM Just a word of advice on the class combo:

If you're looking to play a caster-type, Dragon Disciple is not really conisdered a casting class, in that it doesn't truely advance your spellcasting. If you want to be a half-dragon with sorcerer casting, you might just consider starting as a half-dragon, and taking sorcerer levels (possibly mixed with some full-casting progression PrC). Although, with a LA +3, I'd recommend against it, as you lose three caster levels.

Now, I don't want to discourage you from the vision of your character, and I feel that the fun you could have playing it trumps build optimization. I just wanted to point that out, in case you were looking for ways to keep your character strong. :)

07-17-07, 12:42 PM If you want a spellcasting dragon type you need to find the "Races of Dragon" book and use that. You may find enough on the Dragonborn in the previews to play one.

As noted the Dragon Disciple is not a spellcaster friendly PrC. It may require a touch of casting to enter but doesn't help casters that much which providing quite a bit of beef for the warrior types.

07-17-07, 12:50 PM In all honesty, spellscales seem to be the perfect sorcerer. In terms of flavor, they are supposed to be the physical manifestation of the blood that is found in a sorcerer, so rather than it manifesting as a class, it manifests as a race, which makes more sense to me.

Additionally, you might want to check out Dragon Magic. It has tons of stuff such as feats, spells, alternate class abilities, and prestige classes for dragon-themed characters.

Yeah, it's in the monster manual. Your DM realizes that a 10th level Dragon Disciple becomes a half-dragon, right?

07-17-07, 01:42 PM As a side note, you can't be a dragonwrought kobold because the dragonwrought feat changes your type to dragon, which disqualifies you from the Dragon Disciple, as:
Requirements
To qualify to become a dragon disciple, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Race: Any nondragon (cannot already be a half-dragon).
Skills: Knowledge (arcana) 8 ranks.
Languages: Draconic.
Spellcasting: Ability to cast arcane spells without preparation.
Special: The player chooses a dragon variety when taking the first level in this prestige class.
This is from the SRD and states that you must be a non-dragon! Everything else is fine though :) I really like Dragon Disciples and have tried to be one a couple of times, and one thing that I didn't realize originally, is that the whole class just builds up the template, so you spend 10 levels to get a +4 (?) LA template......I still like it;)

Well, honestly, the book is so-so. It's an interesting read, but I strongly dislike the illustrations and day-in-the-life write-up for the spellscale. It makes elves look like Marv from Sin City. However, mechanically spellcales are cool for sorcerers, which is why so many have recommended them. Additionally, the crunch from Races of the Dragon is very much tailored to dragon-themed racial aspects in which you seem to have interest.
