| Skindrill42208-15-07, 07:13 PM | What races would look awesome as a warlock? |
| nighttree08-15-07, 08:43 PM | Hellbred :D |
| Haplo78108-15-07, 09:11 PM | Karsite, if you don't mind the +2 LA. |
| bobothechimp08-15-07, 10:31 PM | Human. |
| Karlauss08-15-07, 10:51 PM | I tried it as an star elf in Faerun. It worked great! |
| Sunblast08-15-07, 10:57 PM | Well, the book clearly suggests human (that's what we get for being so easily corrupted), but this is obviously for any non-lawful race. My current character is a grugach warlock who somehow inherited his powers from his grandfather who got his powers from the fey. I have yet to uncover the details, though. :D Personally, I can't help but notice the benefits to playing a small race. +1 size bonus to attack rolls AND AC! Also, unlike manufactured weapons, you won't be using smaller damage dice. Halflings even have that +2 racial bonus to dexterity. I think that one might do pretty nicely if you don't mind being a wee warlock. |
| Rhonin the Big08-15-07, 10:59 PM | Any small sized race with a charisma bonus is absolutely perfect for a warlock. Now where can you find such a race? I dunno! |
| Sunblast08-15-07, 11:06 PM | Any small sized race with a charisma bonus is absolutely perfect for a warlock. Now where can you find such a race? I dunno! Dude, whoa. |
| Skindrill42208-15-07, 11:41 PM | where can i find helbred? |
| bobothechimp08-16-07, 12:05 AM | Google. |
| zeratulcraft08-16-07, 12:22 AM | Fiendish Codex 2. |
| JulesCARV08-16-07, 12:33 AM | Dromites could work. The naturally psionic thing is good if you want to combine eldritch blast and psionic shot. They have a +1 level adjustment, though. |
| Waldo_di08-16-07, 01:16 AM | Great Wyrm Gold Dragon Amazing Warlock (funny though don't use too many warlock power's) |
| willygio08-16-07, 02:22 AM | Get human with template half-fiend. :) |
| Poison_Dusk08-16-07, 03:17 AM | If you want a LA+1 then go with deathtouched from Dragon 313(Perhaps the my fav). + 4CHA and +2 wis for a measly -2 CON?! Sign me up! |
| runestar08-16-07, 03:23 AM | Halflings would work great. They are small and have a dex bonus, meaning you hit more easily with your EB. |
| technodemon08-16-07, 08:08 AM | Nevermind!! |
| Manyfist08-16-07, 09:06 AM | Lesser Aasimar get +2 Wis +2 Cha for LA:+0. |
| ShanxAlot08-20-07, 08:44 PM | I've personally found Human(possibly Half-Fiend) to work best, I mean if you need a +1 to hit with a Ranged TOUCH there's something wrong with your build... |
| nighttree08-20-07, 10:16 PM | If you want a LA+1 then go with deathtouched from Dragon 313(Perhaps the my fav). + 4CHA and +2 wis for a measly -2 CON?! Sign me up! Eewww....OK.....Deathtouched Hellbred (soul). although that is a "hell" of a con hit at -4  |
| baronvonboxy08-20-07, 10:17 PM | I know this sounds weird, Orc. |
| Poison_Dusk08-20-07, 10:25 PM | I know this sounds weird, Orc. I actually like this idea, except that horrible hit on CHA. |
| General_Ridley08-20-07, 10:41 PM | Orc warlocks have the flavour, and provided they stick to blasting and specialty invocations that don't result in saves, you're good to go. Works great as an item-monkey (or orcy). Yeah. Item-orcy. |
| Hebitsuikaza08-20-07, 10:44 PM | One would have thought a Goblin would have worked nicely as a Warlock, but... alas... Charisma penalty. Who was the idiot who decided to base the Warlock off of Charisma when Charisma has traditionally only been given to good races? That means that the races most likely to accept Warlocks in their society are the same races that make lousy warlocks. It probably would have been better if they had made the abilities Constitution-based rather than Charisma-based. |
| General_Ridley08-20-07, 10:49 PM | charisma really isn't an issue, unless you want to only use invocations with saving throws. Really, depending on how you want to play, you only need two abilities, and one only needs to be high enough for a +2 bonus. Intelligence and either Dexterity or Charisma. All you really need to have high. Then everything else can be average to good. |
| echoota09-06-07, 03:02 AM | My wife plays a Catfolk from Races of the Wild and it works well. The catfolk are one of the few races that might be worth the LA+1, and it blends well with the warlock with bonuses to Cha and Dex, along with extra movement and natural armor. She's one of the consistently stronger characters in the party. |
| RobbyPants09-06-07, 10:41 AM | Any small sized race with a charisma bonus is absolutely perfect for a warlock. Now where can you find such a race? I dunno! Halflings would work great. They are small and have a dex bonus, meaning you hit more easily with your EB. I think that a Dex bonus will get you further mechanically than a Cha bonus (so long as you've maxed your ranks in UMD). I also think that you gain much more by being small than what you lose. I'll second (or third or whatever) halfling. Heck, if you plan to stay away from melee all together, kobold could be a fun choice. You're small with a 30 foot movement (big plus), darkvision, and a small boost to natural armor! A kobold with the same natural Dex score as a human will have +3 AC by comparison. You'll still be a point higher than a halfling even. |
| pigknight09-28-07, 10:58 PM | Catfolk, Elf, Tieflings, Hellbred, Humans, Gnomes (black magic midgit), Orc (flavor mostly), Drow, Nymph (if your DM drops the level adjustment, which I did cause it gets abilities in those racial HD), or Succubus (see Nymph parenthases) |
| Johnny_Angel09-29-07, 12:02 AM | Warforged would look pretty cool as a Warlock; reminds me a little bit of Iron Man. I also think that an Aasimar Warlock would look cool. All you need to do is change the flavor of your blasts so that they look like they were granted from by the powers of good -Heavenly Blasts instead of Eldritch Blasts. On the other hand, an Aasimar with some of a fiendish bloodline would be an interesting background story. |
| thorofasgard1309-29-07, 01:02 PM | Half-Dragon Star-Elf for the win. |
| Rhonin the Big09-29-07, 01:21 PM | Half-Dragon Star-Elf for the win. +3 level adjustment for the lose. |
| Far_Traveler09-29-07, 01:30 PM | Tiefling. Sure, cha penalty, but its a TIEFLING! |
| Rhonin the Big09-29-07, 01:38 PM | Tiefling. Sure, cha penalty, but its a TIEFLING! I think Oozes make great wizards. Sure they aint gotz no intellimagence but theyz Oozes! How cool is that? Ooze ... wizard! Jokes aside, tieflings don't make that great of a warlock. Their energy resistance is pathetic, their dex bonus can be better synergized by several other races mentioned here (sun elf or halfling), and they can already cast darkness as an invocation. |
| jradd77710-02-07, 09:39 PM | The best I've played is an Underfolk Warlock. They look pretty neat as a warlock. It's cool because they get the extra skills of a human, +10 to hide in rocky terrain (+4 anywhere else), I think a listen bonus of 2, and they wield picks as simple weapons. I used Hideous Blow if I had to melee, combined with Brimstone Blast. It's AMAZING if you crit! |
| Japan_the_cougar10-03-07, 01:57 AM | I played a hellbred (body) warlock in one of my friend's short-lived campaigns. Due to the nature of the character (managed to get a contract of rebirth from Glasya before the Scourging; go ahead and nitpick, I don't care), he let me have Brand of the Nine Hells for Glaysa, and Mark of Malbolge as a side effect. I never actually used the feat powers, but it was great roleplaying fluff. He was constantly trying to make faustian pacts with anything he would communicate with (every 3 HD of creature he converts + own class levels = 1 HD of devil after death.) I managed to get a sparrow and a werewolf (both in the same session :D ) With 8 class levels, I could have gotten a 4 or 5 HD devil at that point. Mechanically, the character was a blaster. His Cha was a 12 at best, and one of my other friends playing a spellscale cleric of Io kept arguing that I needed a certain Cha bonus to get new invocations. Of course, I opened up HIS Complete Arcane and owned him with the absence of ruling. If the game had gone longer, I would have taken him into Hellfire Warlock. |
| Spikes01k10-03-07, 09:07 AM | Lesser Aasimar +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma' LA 0 Add the +1 LA if you can afford it and get a Draconic creature template. |
| RavingDork10-03-07, 10:32 AM | I'm actually playing an Orc Warlock right now. It is an awesome character made weak not because of his Charisma penalty (which has had 0 effect on gameplay so far), but because I chose subpar invocations as a matter of flavor. He can Spiderclimb at will, has Scent from his snake-like tongue, and can Speak to Animals or use Wild Empathy as a Druid of his Warlock level. He helped the party immensely by using small animals (squrriels, rodents, etc.) as distractions, spies, scouts, or witnesses. He also helped them get into a few guarded areas that had vicious guard dogs and similar creatures. He has helped the party avoid ambushes on numourous occasions due to his scent ability. In combat he just climbs a tree or similar high surface and snipes the enemy to his heart's content. It is a LOT of fun. |
| Kadasbrass10-03-07, 11:50 AM | Did a tiefling Warlock before, wasn't bad. The one invocation I used that required a save, was will based and normally used against fighter type monsters (with low will saves) and I used ability focus feat for that one invocation. It was the shatter invocation, very nice. |
| Fraglan10-03-07, 12:25 PM | Feytouched or Half-Fey. Even with the racial HD and LA, Pixie Warlocks are amazing. |
